Character Generation Q&A (OOC)

Excellent!  We can have a rivalry.  I assume you're referring to this one, which seems to be the primary Military Academy operating in 1790's?  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...ry_Academy,_Woolwich

I am Aaron Fauconberg, and I'll be a cadet from the Royal Naval Academy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Naval_Academy

Fair warning:  I will be playing Aaron as arrogant and entitled, as only British minor nobility can manage.  (He's about as minor as you can get -- the fourth son of a younger brother of an unimportant Baron.)  I'm planning for him to grow out of it as we move the story forward, but he's going to start out as a real jerk.

Character Generation Q&A (OOC)

I understand that it was usual to have the officers’ cabins grouped around the Ward Room, the room with the table and chairs I presume, such cabins would be constructed of light weight wooden panels that would be removed and stowed when the ship ‘cleared for action’ so it’d likely that there was a gun in there as well. That said the cadets and trainees could well have been accommodated in shared cabins on the deck below.

Character Generation Q&A (OOC)

In reply to Toby Moore (msg # 20):

quote:
They fell silent as they followed the senior midshipman down the first companion ladder to the deck below, and the deck below that. The deeper they went into the hull the more confined it seemed to become. They were surrounded by shadowy figures, faceless and unreal in the half-darkness, their heads bowed beneath deck beams and the carefully slung equipment for each tethered cannon.
The smells too seemed to rise to meet them. Salt beef and tar, bilge and packed humanity, while all around them the massive hull creaked and groaned like a live thing, the deckhead lanterns spiralling and throwing shapes across the great timbers and seamen alike, as in part of a vast painting.
The midshipmen's berth was on the orlop deck. Beneath the lower gundeck, and indeed lower than the waterline itself, it had no light other than from the hatches and the swaying lanterns.
Grenfell said offhandedly, 'This is it. We share it with the senior master's mates.' He grimaced towards a white-painted screen. 'Although they choose to stay aloof from us.'

Character Generation Q&A (OOC)

For Stats it says that we can move them from one side of the stat to the other and that up to 10 points can be moved in that way. Is that 10 points for each stat or 10 points total? And are we using the +5 for human?

If all skills started at 50/50 is example 1) possible or only example 2)

1)
STR/STA: 65/40
DEX/RS: 60/40
INT/LOG: 60/40
PER/LDR: 60/40

or

2)
STR/STA: 65/40
DEX/RS: 50/50
INT/LOG: 50/50
PER/LDR: 50/50

Re: Character Generation Q&A (OOC)

Padraig Fitzgerald:
STR/STA: 65/40
DEX/RS: 60/40
INT/LOG: 60/40
PER/LDR: 60/40

This one is correct.

You can move up to 10 points across EACH ability pair, and yes, wa are using +5 to a single ability. Also note the section about AGE.

Starting Age:  16 + 1d10

If your starting age is 19+, you can add +5/+5 to STR/STA and +5/+5 to INT/LOG.

Re: Character Generation Q&A (OOC)

Unfortunately I rolled a 1 for my age so I'm not getting any bonuses. But that age has started my creative juices flowing for the character. I'm certainly not a cadet now!

Re: Character Generation Q&A (OOC)

I rolled amazing scores for my stats. Except for the 14. So I'm going to lean into the socially awkward teenager super heavily.

I'm also thinking of taking Engineering as my PSS with a focus on blacksmithing

Re: Character Generation Q&A (OOC)

In reply to Padraig Fitzgerald (msg # 27):

1. Choose your Primary Skill Set (PSS: Military, Science or Engineering)

2. Choose a Career Paths (Press Gang, Volunteer or Cadet)

Then read this: link to a message in this game

You should end up with TWO primary skills (level 1 each):

- Press Gang will have a Military skill and one other from the PSS.
- one Vocation (with some restrictions)
- one Hobby skill
- English or European language spoken (nationality*)
   * not Spanish, Franch or Dutch

- Volunteer will have a Military skill and one other from the PSS.
- one Vocation (with some restrictions)
- one Hobby skill
- English or European language spoken (nationality*)
   * not Spanish, Franch or Dutch

- Cadet will have a Science skill and one other from the PSS.
- one Hobby skill
- English spoken (nationality English, Irish, Scottish or Welsh)
- Literacy or Latin**
**If your primary Science Skill was Classical Education, you get Literacy AND Latin anyway, plus you get to choose one extra Language. If your primary skill was Medicine or Natural Sciences, then you should probably take Literacy.

Re: Character Generation Q&A (OOC)

One of each for hobbies and languages then?

That's going to make things a little more difficult. Being Scottish it makes sense that he'd speak Scots Gaelic but he should also be able to speak English as it was common for folks to speak both. Also, I wanted to take Literacy but then I don't have a language?

Character Generation Q&A (OOC)

I'm a little puzzled on the languages, as well.  I have 'Classical Education' so if I'm not literate and also speak French and either Greek or Latin (or both), it wasn't much of a classical education.

Literacy is a subskill of Classical Education so you get it automatically, but it's also an additional option for those who take Medicine or Natural Sciences.

"LITERACY: Success Rate: 50% + skill level
Literacy. A character with this skill can read and write any language he can speak, including indian languages. The referee can require a skill check in cases where the written material is complicated or the character doesn’t get much practice."

Re: Character Generation Q&A (OOC)

All those answers to questions about skills are accurate (just to make sure everyone is on the same page.) however I have made an exception or minor alteration.  If characters want to take two PSS skills and forgo a military skill I will allow it however considering how much combat action there is likely to be in this game you really do want some fighting skills to survive.
