I just began reading Termination Shock, Greg Stolze's new game, and its supplements Different Trouble (about the game's main three alien species) and the self-explanatory Ships: How To Build And Blast Them. All characters in Stolze's setting carry an ansible, the futuristic equivalent of a smartphone, borrowing a word coined by Ursula Le Guin in her 1966 debut novel Rocannon's World. I would like to suggest we adopt both the name for our nigh-ubiquitous devices, and their capacity as FTL communicators. They access subspace, one of the billion-billions of subquantum strata that form what humans call hyperspace.
