Basic setting

There is a Baron of a town (Emberfall).
Town is surrounded by wilderness and is isolated.
Merchants frequent the town (at DM discretion)

There is a cavern in the wilderness.
Monsters attacked one of the Baron's patrol.
There is a tavern for all of the PCs to use as a central base.
Characters can be from the town or visited the town via traveling merchant caravan.

Found what I needed under Game Introduction

It's a slow day at work so I'm gonna work on my character! I wanted to ask the rest of the party, would you prefer more of a big hitter that does more damage or more of a tank? This Fighter works however I build and I don't mind, figured I'd ask y'all :)

A fighter would really add to our mix. Go with whatever you like best.
Based on the 4 subclasses from the PHB 2024, I like the Battlemaster but Champion looks good with the new ruleset :)

I've already settled on a Battle Master, they've always been a personal favourite and it fits the concept I'm going for. I finally wrote up the backstory and sent it to the GM but I just have to decide on the mechanical Background, Farmer or Noble, and then decide whether I want to go two handed or sword-and-board. I'm excited to get started :D

I like the sword and board as I can see more options in describing the action, if that makes sense.

That's actually a good point...

A weapon with Reach might not be a bad idea....

I have AC 16 and I'm not planning on staying in the rear all of the time :)

I also have the Mind Sliver spell which will reduce their Saving Throw rolls

If you are going PAM, make sure to read text. Lots of weapons now usable, like whips. Text reads Quarterstaff, spear, and any martial weapon with either heavy or reach properties. I suspect it to be a typo, but hey I love the idea of a whip using pole arm master.

I rolled for it because I have trouble deciding between something fun and something fun, and it landed on sword and board so that's what I'm going for! Which means I'll be quite tanky but still deal some good dmg.

Ypu can still use spear or quarterstaff with PAM. If you take the background that guves druid initiate you can turn a staff into a shelalie.

What is PAM?

It's short for Polearm Master.

I think I'm gonna skip the spear and focus on Shield Master instead, Human only allows for a Origin Feat at creation which doesn't work for my plan and build.

Pole Arm Master

My character sheet is basically done, I just need to decide on gear with our GM and then I'm ready to start. I'll probably get a description up somewhat soon :)
