04 - Examples

EXAMPLES

It is very difficult to understand how a system works without seeing it in play. To that end, I've constructed these examples to help show how my ideas work in practice.

Character Sheet

Here is an example character sheet.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Jane Doe is some person.

[*] HP: 1d6 (Untrained) = 6
[*] AC: 0 (Untrained) = +0
[*] Proficiency Bonus: +4

Ward of the Wizard
Jane was a ward of the Wizard and a student of the Mysteries, a philosophy that
revered knowledge in all its forms. As a student of arcane magic, she possessed a
spellbook containing spells that showed her the first glimmerings of true power.

[*] Spell Bonus: 4 (Proficiency) = +4

SPELL SLOTS

[*] 1st: [ ]

The Book of Torrhavon
Jane discovered a work written by the historian Torrhavon, which was really a
spell primer disguised as stories.

Message
Frequency: Unlimited
Casting Time: 1 action
Components: V, S, M
Range: 1 zone
Duration: 1 round

Effect: Jane may point her finger toward a creature within range and whisper a
message. The target hears the message and can reply in a whisper that only she
can hear.

Detect Magic
Casting Time: 1 round
Components: V, S
Range: Self
Duration: Concentration
Cost: One 1st level slot

Effect: Jane can sense the presence of magical energies, viewing them as faint
auras. She gains her spell bonus to Insight Tests to discern more about these
energies.

Identify
Casting Time: 1 minute
Components: V, S, M (a pearl worth at least 100 gp and an owl feather)
Range: Touch
Duration: Instantaneous
Cost: One 1st level slot

Effect: When Jane touches an object, she may learn the properties of a magical
item; whether a spell is affecting the item; whether the item was created by a
spell.

If Jane uses this upon a creature, she learns what spells are currently
affecting it, if any.

Example check

Jane is attempting to get beyond a locked door so that she may investigate the study beyond. The GM declares the difficulty class to be 12. This means that if Jane may use her proficiency bonus, determined by her background and training, she can add +4 to her roll. Therefore, she must roll 8 or higher in order to bypass the locked door. If her proficiency bonus does not apply, then she must roll 12 or higher, unless some other effect can help her.

If Jane does not make the check however, something else may happen in turn. In this system, failure does not mean that the game stops. Instead, a consequence is applied and levied upon the character. Perhaps a guard comes along and finds Jane. Perhaps the door opens, but a trap is triggered, causing damage. This is determined by the GM before the player rolls.

Example encounter

Sometimes a task is too difficult for a single check. In some cases, the GM may determine that an encounter is called for.

Jane is attempting to get beyond a locked door so that she may investigate the study beyond. However, the lock is particularly strong, and so the GM declares the difficulty class  to be 12 with a hit dice of 6. As before, Jane must roll and match the difficulty class, but must also reduce the hit dice of the encounter to zero.

In these cases, a default d4 is assumed. If Jane matches the difficulty class, she may roll the d4 and subtract that number from the encounter's hit dice.

However, she may also possess d8 thieves' tools, meaning she can roll a d8 instead.
