Premise, Rules and RTJ

Gestalt fantasy centred on the Sea of Fallen Stars and the mythos of Faerûn and the Forgotten Realms.

Mechanically, here's the setup:
  • Beginning in Veltalar, brought together by happenstance and perhaps a patron
  • We're using the Dungeons & Dragons 5e ruleset with some homebrew Gestalt rules
  • Characters start at 1st Level with a bonus starting Feat
Players not posting or responding to PMs in a reasonable timeframe will be NPCed, unless they've flagged absence in advance

Premise

We will begin in the Veltalar, capital of Aglarond and port city upon the shores of the Sea of Fallen Stars, in the year 1479 DR during the Era of Upheaval.

Beneath the rule of the Simbarch Council, Veltalar has weathered invasions by Thay and its subsequent exiled Red Wizards, the retreat of the shoreline of the Sea of Fallen Stars, and the degeneration of Old Velprintalar into a disrepair and slums. Despite this, perhaps because of it, there are some within the city who see the opportunity for advantage, for exploration and for the rise of new voices, kinder voices.

Perhaps you were raised in the city? Or recently arrived? Regardless, there is something that has brought you to the foreshore, to the eaves of the fading Yuirwood, to the seas themselves. Some pull for a life less ordinary

RTJ and Character Creation

Your RTJ should provide the following, preferably with a short writing sample:
  1. Your character's name or nickname
  2. Your race, classes (and intended sub-class) and background
  3. Your preferred cultural background, from one of the nations on the Sea of Fallen Stars or neighbouring Aglarond; the further away, the more need for backstory
  4. What are your goals or motives?
  5. What is your biggest flaw or weakness?
  6. Are you a resident of the city or a newcomer?
  7. Who are your friends and family?
Building a character will use the core 5e and Gestalt rules, with the options below:
  • Your choices for Race, and Classes, should be reasonable for your home nation
  • You can broadly use Optional Class Features or Customise Your Background options
  • You should use the Standard Array for selecting your Ability Scores
  • You should take the maximum Hit Points per Level, from the higher Hit Die of your classes
  • You should take a bonus starting Feat
  • You may pick from the starting equipment for your background and both classes, selling back anything unwanted; then 50 GP on top
  • You will begin at 1st Level
We will begin with a short solo session each, to establish your characters, in the few days leading up to the starting scenes. After which, the campaign will be character-driven and sandbox-style with a story arc running in the background - if necessary I can racket that arc up or down to help keep things moving

Going to be abroad between 12th and 20th August, so posting may be erratic and the main scene is unlikely to begin before 21st

Stories and Posting Rates

Please keep posts in the IC threads in-character and third-person, from the outsider perspective. You're welcome to include thoughts and inner monologues but please make them clearly internal and use italic. Pick a colour for speech and use quotes - use Orange for OOC remarks and rolls

Please try and post within 48 hours of GM posts and ensure everyone in the thread has had a chance to post once before posting more than a couple of times. Folks may be in different time zones and times remain strange

Mechanics and Rolls

Please roll only when requested, using the reason text to explain any modifiers. Given timezones, I plan to lean on passive sense checks and initiative.

Please use your first Biography line for your apparent culture and professed career (typically but not necessarily your Class). For example, Aglarondian Swordmaster

Please use your second Biography line for AC, HP and any Conditions, i.e. Sleepless, Thirsty, Hungry, Cold or Injured
