Subject: I think I can, I think I can...
The front cabin, filled with all the nobles and a few hand servants, scribes and attendants, seems rather calm, as many of the group follow Deshnah's lead and sits down a brace themselves for the unexpected. The rear cabin seems a bit crowded and a nervous air seems to be steadily growing. But these lesser find themselves in good stead and well accommodated. Their faces grow more panicked when the door closes on their cabin. Their wide eyes and quick breathing can be seen from the front cabin and quickly they all sit on the floor or a chair once the floor is all taken up, at the command of Shih's trusted servant who has been placed back there by his master. The Livyani priest can also be seen with those in the back cabin. Apparently he has appointed himself the protector of the lower classes.

At Jenge, Ssrivan and Dlarumei's assurances, and after Orun, Nesh and two of the guards board the cabin, Shih depresses the button next to where he is standing and the doors swing shut and suck up tight into the jam. All the external sounds of the station are gone, replaced by an eerie silence where only the muted hum of the cabin can be heard. A pleasant sounding female voice comes from the ceiling and though it is not understood in word, it's meaning and intent seem inviting enough.

Jenge's candle seem to burn without pause or flicker as he moves about the cabin until he stands before a square grated object in the ceiling. The candle flickers wildly as a rush of air pours into the cabin. Several other of these objects begin pumping in cool and strangely perfumed air into the cabin. Thought the smell is unfamiliar it does not cause any difficulties in breathing and, in fact, feels rather welcome and refreshing after the heat of the cavern. Jenge continues a search for possible problems though he puts his candle away as it has become useless at the moment.

Ssrivan can be heard in his pedantic tone dictating to his lovely scribe the actions that Dlarumei is taking. "A button on the upper right hand side of the console has been depressed and a small door, not unlike the one in the Kiosk has opened. The disc is placed in the slot with the pattern facing skyward and the slot accepts the disc and pulls it in thereafter the door closes."

At that moment the door between the small room at the nose of the cabin and the rest of the chamber closes rather rapidly and with a great rush of air. Ssrivan can be seen with an inquisitive look on his face peering out through the glass into the cabin. His voice is now very muted and comes lightly out of the ceiling and sounds very far off in the distance. "Well, we'll have to mark that one down for future reference." His voice becomes louder as he moves away from the door and further into the small nose chamber. "It seems that once the disc is inserted this area become secure in some fashion. Interesting. There must be a way to communicate with the rest of the cabin, I would imagine some device allow us to…" His voice becomes very clear as it booms down from overhead. "Thank you noble priestess, I see that you are acquainted with some of the ways of the ancients." Ssrivan then reappears in the window of the door to the small forward chamber. He has a strange device on his head that holds a small bobbing puff of material connected by a strand of ridged substance. As he speaks his voice is carried out through the ceiling in both of the cabins.
" It would appear that we are about to depart, I might encourage each of you to find someplace to hold on as I have no real idea what to expect from here on." He looks towards Shih with an inquisitive look of "do you know" on his face.

At that moment the lights dim by, at least, 70% and you can feel the chamber move slightly. It seems to rise just a bit and then it sways from side to side, seemingly adjusting itself on its track. The humming sound, which has been resonating in the lower registers, begins climbing in tone and Hrissu playfully matches its tone with notes of his own. He even plays with harmony and key change principals as the tones climb in pitch.

Those looking forward, through the control cabin can see that the thick tapestry which hung over the mouth of the tubway entrance is now rolling up to reveal a large round and very dark hole in the face of the wall. Your destination lay beyond that opening and whether good idea or not, you and your comrades are now committed. You also notice the two bronze statues animate themselves and start a slow and controlled march along side the cabins. Their gaze fixed on the back wall; they pass without care along side the train cars. Once at the end of rear car, they turn, grab hold of a handle that protrudes from the back of the cabins exterior and step onto a very small plate. There seems to be finality in this action as the pitch of the train gains volume and tone upward and the train begins to move forward.

Slowly it slides into the dark cave like hole, and once there a series of blue lights, long and very thin, light up the sides of the cave. Just a pair, running side by side for as long as the eye can see down the cave itself. They let in a spectral light that casts strange shadows within the cabin, but even these are not unfriendly.

Then you feel it, like someone pushing down on you body, those standing seem to move with the pressure, and those sitting feel a weighty sensation. The iridescent blue lights start moving along side the tubway car, slowly at first and then quickly and more rapidly they pass by as the train launches itself down the cave. Your body feels heavy and some experience nausea at this motion, but it soon passes as the train reaches its speed and the feeling subsides. Almost all noise has gone, and all that is prevalent is the slight humming of the train and the breathing of its occupants. The lights flash by at an alarming rate, almost unreal the speed with which they zing past the windows. The tubway thus far is dark and black, with some of you seeing the occasional side cavern flash by. The ride is very smooth and almost hypnotic in nature as the soft pulsating tone of the cabin drones on down the tubway. The party seems to calm itself a bit now that the train is under way.

From: Shih hi Nacunya [2003-02-26 03:18:30]
Subject: I thought you could, I thought you could
Shih's brows furrow in concentration beginning when the disk is inserted. They stay that way throughout the launch process. While he is not concerned (clearly passenger safety would have been of paramount importance to the designers of this tubeway device), enough things are different that it gives him pause.

"Noble Ssrivan, can you hear me in the forward chamber as well as we can now hear you?" Shih watches the window through which Ssrivan and Dlarumei now move.

Shih looks around the cabin for windows that depict their potential destinations. If he sees none, he moves forward towards the front console to see what he may see. Hopefully, he can gain access to that front section.

Over time, Shih also examines and experiments with any visible buttons/devices in the car. It's been his experience that such are safe. As he already knows about the light button, he leaves that one alone (someone else can have the pleasure of plunging everyone into darkness ... Shih's private practical joke).

Once he is sure that he can communicate with everyone in the front car including Dlarumei and Ssrivan, Shih shares the following:

"For those who have never traveled by tubeway, this car we are in is unlike any other in my past experience. Clearly, it is meant to convey masters of the devices of the ancients. From the convenience of the slot to place the disk, to the specialized ru'un during our launch, to the device on Ssrivan's head, to the door to separate the operator from the aristocracy, to the strange adaptations of this device ... so unlike any other tubeway car. Most tubeway cars are not meant to be easily altered by their occupants. As I said earlier, most cars have the slot for the disk hidden under the console, not on top where it can be easily accessed. One piece of knowledge does seem to have eluded the makers of this tubeway though. In every other car that I've been in there was no sensation of motion. This is an important distinction, as it suggests that those who created this car retained much knowledge of the ancients as well as the devices to create all that we've seen, though some knowledge has failed them over time."

"Which brings us back to the Elders of Monru and why we're here ... Dlarumei, as we are now all committed to this quest, I believe we have earned some explanation. I held my queries when it was meet that I do so. Please tell us of how you came by the disks that would transcend the defenses of the tubeway station from which we've just departed. Please tell us of the similar tubeway station below the city of Monru. From place to place and device to device, all transcended with specialized keys and knowledge... I ask you again who you are and who those in Monru are? Did the ancestors of your people create all of this? Ssrivan's words are telling. I too see that you are acquainted with some of the devices of the ancients. Too many facts now seem to converge. Noble priestess, I would also be very interested in hearing the details of the quest for the azure sphere."

Shih makes himself comfortable sitting with his back to the door, ready to take up his items at a moment's notice.

Subject: Do Tell
Jenge looks like the only cat in the fish market, once he's satisfied that the train is operating safely. He smiles and nods happily as he notes that the control cabin is sealed separately from the passenger cabin.

When Shih begins to speak, Jenge makes a point of moving well away from him, to the door leading to the second car. Once there, his eyes rove everywhere, taking in details.

From: Jenge hiVarion [2003-02-28 17:22:32]
Subject: I Hear You Knocking
Observers would note that Jenge spends some small time with a screen in the cabin, spends more time looking through the window into the second car, and finally appears to be considering opening a small closet door. His movements throughout all these endeavors are very methodical.

From: Deshnah [2003-03-03 04:25:01]
Subject: Breathless
Desh is happily watching all about him with awe and great interest. Having decided the current car appears relatively safe he intends to fully savour this one in a lifetime experience.

Never again will a ride on a galloping Chlen feel so exhilarating.

Meanwhile he notices Jenge approach too the door !Be careful you do not let all the air out of this chamber if you open that door" Desh comments.

Subject: Taking it all in...
Urutlen finds a comfortable seat (hopefully with a view of whatever can be seen through windows, etc.) and enjoys the ride. He has been taking all of this in to this point. He has heard rumours and whispers of this type of thing in his many travels, but never dreamed of actually being in a tubeway. Urutlen makes sure all of his supplies, arrows, bow, etc. are in order. He says quietly to himself "I'll bet one of Hrissu's songs would calm our spirits."

From: Almodhim hi'Harisaya [2003-03-03 08:20:41]
Subject: buckle up
Almodhim thinks to herself "going from one enclosed place to another. Gods." She tries to stay calm and hopes they all get to where they need to go as soon as possible.

Subject: blue light special
As the lights flash by faster and faster, Churisan puts his back to a wall and looks tense, his hand on his sword hilt. He's muttering something to himself, a simple repetitive verse, perhaps a prayer, and staring into space.

Subject: Control Cabin
Those still looking towards the window to the control cabin note that Ssrivan has turned back to the console in front of him and is studying it intently.

Subject: Eas'in on down the road..
The train hums on at a feverish pace the blue lights pass by so quickly that they almost seem to be one steady stripe of iridescent blue. The train is almost silent, save for the slight hypnotic hum of whatever powers your voyage. Ssrivan's voice can be heard clearly dictating to his scribe and Dlarumei is also heard as she and Ssrivan confer and discuss the various items they are observing in the small cabin. Most of the party has settled into some sort of travel posture, though it is very apparent that all are not pleased with this particular form of transportation. Though Hrissu hums softly, melodic, soothing melodies of ancient songs that all are familiar with, it is probably done so to calm his nerve as much as it calms the nerves of those around him.

After about half an hour of travel, and just as most party members had reached a state of drowsy complacency about the voyage, the luring blue lights flash to deep red and, though it is not easily felt by those in the cabins, the train starts to slow. Ssrivan voice can be heard from the ceiling " I did not touch anything, but you can see that the red lights go on for as far down the tubway as we can see. Nothing seems out of place on the console and there are no flashing lights that would indicate a warning of something being wrong."
Dlarumei's voice can also, faintly be heard… " I'm not sure what would cause such a thing. This system is much different that what we have in Monru, but I agree that I see nothing that would indicate alarm. Perhaps the age of the system is starting to show?"

The train slows gently, in measured increments, till it is moving along at the speed of running man. Looking out the windows and down the path the train is headed, you can see the reason why. There appears to be a station coming up and the white light and tiled walls shine brightly off in the near distance.

From: Orun Vu'urtesh [2003-03-05 22:03:09]
Subject: Too big to be subtle
Orun slowly uncrosses his legs and sits up straight. He rolls his head from side to side and arches his back to help get the kinks out. He casts a quick glance at his sword, resting beside him on the floor, and then at Nesh and Churisan. He continues to run his fingers down the groves of the carved relief in his spears staff, all the while sizing up defensive posturing in case it is needed. He makes no move to stand, but it is obvious, to those with trained eyes, that he is coiled and ready to strike no matter how relaxed he appears on the outside.

From: Almodhim hi'Harisaya [2003-03-06 09:26:18]
Subject: slowing?
Almodhim has been doing her best to keep under control. She has succeeded..but she has a swift feeling of relief knowing that the company will soon be out of this contraption. Almodhim is sitting, appearing calm, but with a bit of a wilder look in her eyes.

From: Deshnah [2003-03-06 10:24:32]
Subject: Notes the change in lighting and speed
Desh scans and takes in the party around him and their rapidly approaching goal. Having completed his check of the car He also begins to stretch and prepare for the next move.

From: Chúrisan Sóruna [2003-03-06 10:27:43]
Subject: Action stations
Churisan doesn't respond to the changes right away, but as the car continues to slow down he becomes aware of his surroundings again. He unclips his sword (he still has the steel one loaned by Shih) and stands ready near the door.

From: Shih hi Nacunya [2003-03-06 13:12:54]
Subject: Assumptions
"Though make ready, we may not be stopping, only slowing down to pass through a station."

From: Jenge hiVarion [2003-03-06 18:49:07]
Subject: What's This?
Looking more than a little frustrated, Jenge stops what he's doing and cranes forward to observe the approaching station.

From: Ssrivan hiTlokhar [2003-03-06 21:04:46]
Subject: Station Ho!
Ssrivan is carefully watching the panels in front of him for the changes induced by the approach to the new station. He will also do a quick scan of the station itself as the train pulls in, since his current vantage point allows him to see it before the train actually gets there.

From: Neshkriuma hiKharsama [2003-03-06 21:28:36]
Subject: Ready for what?
Neshkriuma will assume a standing posture at the back of the car, loosening weapons and watching those behind us to see if they are also ready.

From: Urutlen Utu-Tengmai [2003-03-07 07:21:16]
Subject: At the ready...
Urutlen looks up to see what lies ahead. He is ready, as his bow and arrows have already been checked.

From: Shih hi Nacunya [2003-03-08 23:47:00]
Subject: Think on it ...
"Whether we stop at this station or not, we are all privileged! Though it may not be our current destination, we are seeing a place undisturbed that could house the collective wisdom of a people who retain much knowledge that has been lost through the ages. If we're allowed to live with this information, our fortunes are assured."

Understanding that there will be sufficient time to get up and make ready if the car actually stops, Shih moves to get the best view of the station. In particular, he looks for symbols or guards that may distinguish the place or presage what may come at our final destination.

From: Almodhim hi'Harisaya [2003-03-10 08:19:36]
Subject: slowing?
Almodhim sees the subtle clues from the other company members. She notices that the car they are traveling in is slowing, and she places her hand on her sword, trying to ready herself for whatever may happen.

From: Jenge hiVarion [2003-03-11 18:20:27]
Subject: After You
Jenge, having scanned the members in both cars, takes a firm stance near a window that will give him a view of the platform as they stop.

Subject: Chatanoogy?
The train marches on at a slow pace, the tunnel becoming ever lighter as the cabins approach the station. There is a soft hiss, of what reminds you of summer breezes, from outside the windows of the cabin, and then you pass from the dark tunnel into the light of the station. The train seems to pass along a wall made of dark gray stone on its right side, but a quick glance to the left and your eyes focus in on a most beautiful sight. Elegant long fixtures hang from a vaulted ceiling, providing a white light that gleams from the crystals that hang all around the base of each ornate fixture. The floors, highly shined and reflective, white marble slabs amplify the light and cast it towards the polished gray stones that make up the walls. The colors of brilliant white and deep gray make a wonderfully soothing atmosphere and their contrast is striking and artfully well planned. The glossy, red stone benches placed around the perimeter of the room are sandwiched between deep green plants in dark wood containers to add a contrast to the stonework.

The room is much wider than it is deep, and in its center is an oblong table, low to the ground, and skirted on the side farthest from you by several large stuffed chairs. There are nine of them all together, all situated in a semi circle facing the tracks that you are traveling on. As though they were the audience to your production. Standing just a slight bit higher, directly behind these chairs, is a Kiosk, not terribly unlike the one from the station you departed from a short time ago. Though it seems to be more of a kidney shape Kiosk than the "L" shape one that you encountered. Its flat, gleaming silvery surface would indicate that it has not been activated and sits there passively as the train moves on.

On the very back wall, there is a pair of silvery doors, not unlike the ones in the first cavern the party had entered. Several green plants too, skirt these and on the right side is a small red-stone table with a greenstone bowl. The bowl is large enough to take up the entire tabletop (about 2 feet square) and is cut from a single piece of deep green stone and polished to a high luster.

Those who were watching ahead as the train entered the station, think that they may have seen a being of some sort slip into the far back, silvery, doors and then they closed. It was the size of a normal man but did not seem to walk like one. Rather it seemed to glide along the floor rapidly. It was just a glimpse for those who saw it, but an interesting peek at one of the inhabitants of this area, I suppose.

The train itself shows no sign of slowing any further and the beauty and wonder of this station only lasts but for a minute as you hear the low rush of air sound again and the train slips into the darkness of the tunnel. There, it picks up speed rather rapidly, giving you that pressing feeling once again until the familiar hypnotic sound of the train's top speed returns to fill your ears and numb your mind.

From: Shih hi Nacunya [2003-03-12 10:24:47]
Subject: Odd!!!
A barely discernable smile appears on Shih's face as the car continues on its journey.

"From where I was standing, I perhaps got a better look at that ru'un than some of you standing further back. Though it had some humanoid characteristics, from the waist up, it was moving on some contraption where it's feet and legs should have been (OOC: treads?), and it was obvious that it did not wish to be seen, for whatever reason. That last observation is the strangest. While I've seen amazingly sophisticated ru'un before that could converse and act like a human, I've never seen a ru'un exhibit fear. Why would a ru'un built by the people who created all of this be concerned about this car? ... unless this tubeway was created and later shut down by the ru'un. It's reaction was very un-ru'unlike; more like a man really. I wonder ... "

Shih's eyes narrow as he considers why a ru'un behaving like a man might be related to the builders of this tubeway, which could also be related to those in Monru. Ru'un???

From: Chúrisan Sóruna [2003-03-12 15:32:38]
Subject: response to Shih
"Always it seems you favor the more complex explanation. Were not the ru'un servants of the Ancients? Is it not reasonable that a servant would remove itself if not needed? It was evident that we were not stopping, so it returned to its quarters."

[ooc: message edited, as I had not realized that Dlarumei was closeted with Ssrivan]

From: Ssrivan hiTlokhar [2003-03-13 20:05:38]
Subject: Concentration
Ssrivan is seen to look up for a while as the station passes, but he quickly returns to his study of the consoles.

From: Orun Vu'urtesh [2003-03-16 16:46:54]
Subject: Huh? what? Where?
"I must question as well noble Shih, " Orun says as he stretches, " Are all priests of Sarku as,… diligent, (he find a word after several seconds of searching for something appropriate) in looking for ulterior motives as you? I will freely admit that I am not as learned as my clan brother Churisan in the ways of the ancients or their methods, but perhaps the Ru'un is a slave of some sorts and is not to be seen by imperial eyes? Why would it matter, the ancients tubway car did not see fit to stop and so it is of little concequence to me. Trying to rest a bit is more important to me now than what could have been. Perhaps it is just the warrior's way, and your priestly ways are truly foreign to me anyway. So, I don't ………" His words trail off as he has seemed to run out of things to say, or has just lost interest. Orun shrugs his shoulders, smiles politely at Shih and returns his gaze out the window and the streaming blue light that seems to mesmerize him.

From: Shih hi Nacunya [2003-03-17 03:07:11]
Subject: Ahhh motives you say
"Orun, my companion, looking for ulterior motives is more a political state of being than a unique characteristic of worshipers of Sarku. Success in all large organizations requires that one hone that sensitivity. What I find intriging about our group dynamic is motives that can potentially get some of us killed. The unleashing of a potential horror, long banished from Tekumel, must necessarily be in my thoughts as well. While I do not fear death, the manner of it is as important to me as I'm sure it is to you."

"Satisfactory answers to the questions I've posed should be of as much interest to everyone as to me. They go to the underlying motives for this quest."

From: Deshnah [2003-03-17 03:58:39]
Subject: Ru'un away...
Perhaps the Ru'un was waiting to geet the train until it became apparent we were not going to stop?

From: Hrissu hi Metumel [2003-03-17 12:59:53]
Subject: Hrissu looks up.
He has been looking at a spot on the floor of the Tubeway car for a VERY long time. He looks up, humming a little tune, smiling that wierd little smile of his.

"Do you think that Monru is still a city? We have been down here a long time, and what is a long time here could be an eternity there. It is possible that everything we have ever known is already crumbled to dust."

He looks around the car, blinking.

From: Shih hi Nacunya [2003-03-17 16:56:59]
Subject: A rock of time
"Noble Hrissu, I have experienced shifting time when traveling through nexus points. Yet always, time travels as we all understand it. Why then do you feel that much time has passed? Did we miss some passage through one or more nexus points? Please explain your comment."

Shih looks with both interest and concern at Hrissu. Perhaps his mind has snapped due to recent stresses ... or he could have realized some truth about our journey that the rest of us failed to perceive?!

From: Jenge hiVarion [2003-03-18 19:19:22]
Subject: Press Enter
The indefatigable scholar-priest resumes his previous inspections, having guessed that once again there would be no illuminating explanations in response to the worm-kisser's inquiries. He sighs in frustration, but almost immediately his attention is focused once again on the small screen he was examining, placed in a smooth expanse of the car's wall.

After careful observation from many angles, including what looks like a bit of probing with something very tiny, he begins to methodically manipulate what he considers to be controls. Pressing, twisting, pulling, placing his palm and eye, in turn, against the panel, when with a flash of light and a rasp, the thing comes to life!

From: Almodhim hi'Harisaya [2003-03-19 20:08:28]
Subject: What what what?
Almodhim stands up and asks anyone who will answer, "When will we be free of this tubeway? And do you mean to tell me that when we emerge we may return to ruination??!"

She stands, sweating, waiting for someone to answer.

From: Orun Vu'urtesh [2003-03-19 22:44:16]
Subject: Well now.
The large warrior sits up and takes a good look at Almodhim to assess her general well-being before he speaks.

"Noble Almodhim, we are safe here, for the moment, the fresh air that blows into the cabin is relaxing and refreshing, don't you think? The motion of the train is melodic and soothing." He looks to Hrissu to chime in with some comforting words as well, as he judges Almodhim's words to be bordering some panic.

"As long as we can do nothing about our present condition, come, sit with me, noble Aridani warrior-priestess of the Red Sword Clan, and let us impress each other with our tails of great deeds and mighty battles. It will do me good to take my mind off of this insufferable long trip." He motions for her to take a seat on the floor next to him and he clears some of his equipment out of the way for her.

From: Almodhim hi'Harisaya [2003-03-21 14:10:25]
Subject: whew!
Almodhim, having been near panic, relishes the idea of speaking of her deeds and hearing of new ones.

"Yea, Noble Orun. Let us speak of our past deeds; my mind is troubled and needs refreshment. Let us feast on our deeds."

She moves toward the warrior and sits down. She sits stiffly, but attentively, ready to speak and to listen.

Subject: Presto Chango
The train hums on for a long time, its hypnotic rhythm enables many of the party to rest and there are those who take full advantage of this time. The train passing through two more carbon copies of the first station it went through. Each time the train slowed and crept through the station, and each time it regained its momentum for another long stretch of rhythmic forward momentum. Then, a very peculiar thing happens, and the train slows and stops in the middle of the tunnel. The lights, of course, had turned red to warn the passengers of the impending slow down and remained red after the train had come to a complete stop. This, being interesting in and of itself, is quickly overshadowed as the two Ru'un, who had been standing on the back of the second car, walk measurably along side the train and out before it. There, they work on some large metal levers and with a jerk and a large pop, the trains nose shifts to the left. There are some long, high pitched squeals and scraping noises as the mechanisms the Ru'un are working with show their age.

Those able to view the happenings through the front cabin watch as the nose of the lead car is moved by the Ru'un and pointed in a direction, some twenty-five degrees left of its original course. This, of course, is relayed to the rest of the party, whose various vantage points can only afford them snippets of the scene unfolding before the train. It is obvious to even those who have never been on a mode of transportation like this before that this is probably not the standard. With several more jerks felt throughout the train cars there is finally a great sound like something being locked into place, and the trains motion stops.

The Ru'un then walk to the wall that the train is now facing and work with some control panels hidden within the smooth tile surface of the tubway. This causes the wall to open up directly before you. It appears to be another tunnel and a large section of the track slides out towards your train, slowly and methodically until you hear it attach to the front of the train with a reverberating thud.

Peering forward into the dark tunnel ahead of your train, you watch as a large black object slowly advances towards you. It is heavy looking and round and seems to share the track that has just attached to your transportation. It advances right up to the nose of your train, and somewhere, out of sight, you can here it attaching itself to the nose of the cabins.

A tone chimes from the ceiling and a pleasant female voice speaks words that have no meaning to any of you. She speaks for some time, and at the end of her speech the train slowly moves forward towards the gapping maw of the newly opened tunnel. You can't help but wonder if all this would have been much quicker and smoother back when the system was used regularly.

The slow progression into the dark tunnel is rather ominous and the slaves and porters show some fear and nervousness as their cabin slowly enters the black darkness. The dimmed interior lights of the cabins allow you to see each other clearly but nothing is visible outside the windows of your cabins. You can hear the large iron doors of the tunnel close and lock behind you, and you think that you feel the strange sensation of rising, as though the train itself is elevating in some fashion. A sensation that is verified by the conversation of Ssrivan and Dlarumei, still being broadcast over the intercom system. They speak of small red lights out in front of the train, beyond the large object that attached itself to the nose, that seem to slowly travel downward.

This portion of the trip lasts, perhaps ten minutes until you feel the motion stop with a slight jolt. There are some noises outside the cabins, sounds of metal hitting metal and squeaks of items rubbing against each other. Then, as though a breath of fresh air, a long sliver of dim light shines before the train. A sight of great relief that widens out before you and allows the sides of the chamber that you are in to be seen. The large, crate like, chamber that you are in starts to slide past you as the train is pulled forward out of the box and onto new track.

The tunnel that you find yourself in is cut, roughly, out of living rock. It is not the smooth tile finish of the lower tubway, though it is cut in the same, circular fashion of what you have just left. Also gone, are the long iridescent lights, replaced by small round glowing orbs that shed a dim golden light and allow you to see the varied colors of the walls themselves. Their brass bases seem to have been neglected for some time and show the green and decay of age.

Once the train is completely out onto the new track, you can hear the large doors close behind you. Then, rather peculiarly, the train slips backward a bit, till it rests on doors themselves. It is then that you actually notice the track is on a slight incline. You hear some more iron related noises and the black object before you slowly moves away from the front of the train. In this light you can see its spherical shape and as it moves further away you can finally see the base that it rides upon. When it is about 10 meter out in front of the train, you feel a slight tug, and you begin to move forward again. Looking out the nose of the train, you can see that there is a tether attached to the spherical object that extends out from under your train. You can also see that you are attached to a piece of track that is larger than the track the black Sphere is traveling on.

The train starts to pick up some speed, but certainly not the speed it had when flashing through the deeper alcoves of this system. The speed levels out at about the pace that a person could run, when running as quickly as possible, and there seems to be a slight cadence to the motion as you advance upward through the tunnel. As this leg of the journey begins, the door between the main cabin and the small nose cabin opens up with a rush of air. Dlarumei steps into the open doorway and cautiously steps through into the cabin where she apologizes if she steps on anyone and makes an announcement.

"It would seem, based on my experience, and I am certainly willing to confer and give way to those with greater experience, that we have change to an older system. We no longer seem to be able to propel our selves because this new track is smaller that the other one. So, we are being towed by the large black sphere before us and we seem to be affixed to a piece of track that is of the size we need to rest on. All the other systems seem to still be working, so I don't believe that we are in any danger at the moment."

She takes a quick look around to see if there are any concerns that she might try to answer.

"Noble Dlarumei, good of you to finally join us. I believe you have it reversed ... and this may be a good thing. I suspect that the tunnels we were in below were actually older, had become disfunctional, and were utilized by this culture for their own ends; a tribute to the workmanship of ages past. They then carefully hid their private enclaves, creating mechanisms that would allow them to continue traveling in such style, pomp and circumstance as was possible. We can better judge their capabilities by what we see now. Clearly though, they had much greater understanding of ancient devices than exists today. I now truly believe we travel to one of their hidden places."

"Noble Shih, worshiper of the worm lord and master skeptic, I wish that you were present with us in Monru for the feast of sustenance and questions. There, those who could answer all of your questions were gathered to shed light on any aspect of this quest, and I am sure that you might have been satiated while lodging there. It occurs to me that your instruction from Kunur must have been brief as to the finer details of our journey so I will endeavor to fill in those areas of question in your mind. I hope that my words will satisfy the questions that Jenge, Urutlen and Almodhim may have as well. For they have also been added to our complement after our departure from Monru and I am sure that they would also enjoy some of the thought behind their participation."

Dlarumei picks a spot on the floor that allows her to sit and speak to the largest contingent possible.

"For those who have been smiled upon by their gods and have traveled upon tubways in the past, what Shih says is true, this car is unlike any that we have experience ever. It was the expectation of the Elders in Monru that, if this Tubway existed at all, it would be both a beneficial find and a means of assisting us on our quest for the Emerald Sphere of Sighs. It is their belief that it is not a later addition built by those who only retained some failed knowledge, as you would espouse Shih, but rather one of the first of its kind ever built, one of the original tubways perhaps. It is speculated by many of the learned in Monru that this is one of three systems that travels from, what is now, Yan Kor to, Perhaps the Islands of Haida Pakala, and perhaps there are others which travel beyond that. This might explain the sensation of motion that you say you have never felt before, this being built perhaps before the ancient knew how to make tubway travel motionless. It might also explain the situation that we find ourselves in now, being towed by that metal sphere. I can neither confirm nor reject this theory, for I find little evidence to support its age or deny its earlier creation. There are several controls in the front cabin that I cannot explain, and those of you who feel so inclined to examine them may freely do so. But in my opinion, the controls found there are less refined but no less precisely crafted than one found in more common tubway cars."

"This, of course, explains one of the reasons why we are here. The Elders of Monru had uncovered information that lead them to believe that such a tubway existed, but they never had enough information to find where it was located. After the discovery of the Azure Sphere, several hundred years ago, small clues have been forthcoming. Many attribute this to the Azure Sphere itself, which has flourished and grown in the Elders care. They feel that the Sphere has given them the sight to find certain clues, believing that it is repaying the Elders for their kindness and attention. Whether that be true or not, several discoveries have seemingly popped up with very little effort over the recent years, the location of the entrance we found was one of those discoveries."

"So while this tubway was only a speculation, our first task is complete and we are successfully within the actual system and are verifying its existence. Now our hope is that it is taking us closer to our intended target. It is speculated that this tubway was the one that transferred those ancients who were masters and overlords, along with those responsible for the creation of many of the other tubways. Some clues would suggest that there was a time when only a select few were able to travel in such a manner, but those few were chiefly responsible for much of the expansion of the tubways that we still find and use today. This it simply a theory but it might explain the ease with which these systems can be accessed. The thought being that there is no need for more elaborate security if only a few know where the train is and how to use it. But still, all that any of us can do is speculate over this car and its origins, so I will move on to your other concerns."

"The discs that we have were discovered about 250 years ago, in a vault in Livyani. This, of course, is the catalyst for Monru's connection with the Livyani and one of the reasons why I spent time there and why the Livyani Priest is with us now. The Livyani, or more precisely, the Livyani in Farsha had uncovered a large, underground complex that housed many artifacts of the ancients, including a large vault of iron. Through various means, the Elders of Monru became aware of this discovery and the Livyani knew of what lay beneath Monru. This, of course, prompted an agreement between Monru and the Livyani city of Farsha, and naturally the implementation of a scholarly exchange was the result. It is the Elders belief that the complex the Livyani discovered was an end station and warehouse for the construction of what most of us are familiar with as the Tubway systems. Most of the system under that area of Livyanu had been destroyed and was impossible to access by any means. Much of the areas that were not completely caved in had been filled by the Kapraz River, and this lead us to believe that the city of Hrais also was connected in some fashion as they have documents that spoke of a time when they had experienced an uncommon rise in their water table with no climatic rational."

"There is also a deep, deep hollow in the jungles of Nmartusha, which, after years of exploring, yielded nothing. The Elders also believe that there is another deep hollow, or possibly ventilation shaft, somewhere near Ru, but that has yet to be uncovered. In looking across the landscape these points create a plausible line that could be followed by a tubway car, and would explain, though only somewhat I grant you, the reasons for certain relics of the ancients which pop up along this path. We also believe that there are deep tunnels, like the one we found, extending up to, and beyond, the city of Kha in the lands held by the Empire of Mu'ugalavya, though none have ventured through the territories of the red hats to prove this yet."

"The tunnel we were just traveling through was thought to run up, and, most likely, past Krel in Yan Kor. This is where Jenge might be of some help. I think that he had possibly entered a nexus chamber not unlike the one we passed through. Though his had been destroyed and was no longer usable. How he was brought to us, I still cannot fathom, but none-the-less, the information he has gathered would be useful in the puzzle of these ancient tubways."

"This brings me back to the discs. These discs that we have are similar in every fashion, except for the symbols on their one side, to all the other discs used to run any other tubway of which we are aware. These discs would never function in any of the other systems, so it was conjectured, and rightly so it would seem, that they belonged to a different system. I must tell you Shih, and the rest of you as well; the fact that this tubway even exists is to our fortune. Before we arrived, there was no way of proving that it was not just the fantasy of wishful thinking and strange calculations. But our being aboard this train is proof that such things did once run under large expanses of land, long ago. I would also remind you that we have all taken an oath to bring back to Monru, that which we find on the journey, whether we took that oath in Monru or here on the voyage itself, this information is to return to the Elders who have sponsored us and who have made arrangements to pay us and our Clans handsomely for our troubles. After that obligation has been met, you may profit as you can from the information we gather on this journey together."

Dlarumei takes a pause to look around before continuing on with her explanations. She stretches, and takes a slight pause to rub her hands together as the cabin seems to be a bit chilly to those used to a more humid and warm climate. She then fixes her gaze at Shih to start off…

"You ask about my ancestors and those in Monru. Well, I can tell you that those in my Clan have been followers of the prince of the blue room for as long as can be told, before that, there is little known. But as worshipers of Ksarul, and as many of you already know, there are many secrets that lurk deep within our ceremonies and rituals just as many of you, most assuredly, have as well. I know that the worshipers of Sarku have many secrets that I doubt you would be willing or able to divulge to us Shih. But be that as it may, The Temple of Ksarul is the most prominent in Monru. It was the principal founding temple and the Clan of the Cloak of the Azure Gems was one of the primary Clans to bring Monru to its glory. Monru is a city of little consequence, or so it would seem. Those of you who have been there have seen that it thrives in beauty and grace. It is also one of the few cities that I am aware of where the Pavar's doctrines have been so well embraced and the Tlomitlanyal and the Tlokiriqaluyal live and work together to create a peaceful exuberant community. We enjoy the anonymity that the forest of the Kurt hills supplies and we are able to pursue our interests unmolested by standard politics and petty religious back biting. The original Elders of the city made a discovery beneath the city, that of a tubway and a large number of ancient artifacts and devices. From that time forward there has always been an emphasis on studying the ancients with respect for their creations and a hope of learning from their history. Some things have come with time and others are still as elusive and lost to us as the explanation of how to form weapons from Chlen hide would be on a newborn child. This is one of the reasons for all the temples being represented. We have a greater brain trust to work with and nine other viewpoints to question and confer over. I grant you that it does seem implausible that all this exists, but it does and has for a very long time."

"As to the quest for the Azure Sphere, I have little knowledge about the exact "quest" as you put it. I know that it has been in Monru for as longer than I have. I know that it was brought back from some unmarked temple in the Pan Chaka area. I know that the temple of Vimuhla in that area claims all artifacts from that region to be their property, but they had no knowledge of it before our discovering it and they are still not even sure that it actually exists. Perhaps one of the reasons why there are no worshipers of the flame god in our ranks. The long and the short of it, Noble Shih, is that I think the Elders are still trying to understand the Sphere. It does not give up its secrets easily, but he Elders have been patient for a very long time. We know that there are companion Spheres to this Azure one and that is what we seek. The pictographs we viewed in the nexus station are the first depictions of any spheres of power that I have seen. At least in reference to what was depicted on those walls. I will not deceive you either, the Elders hope for a greater power if the two spheres are brought together. The azure sphere already offers longer life and greater mental prowess for those who work with it. And those who case spells seem to have greater control at earlier ages and with less training than their counter parts. There seems to be a generally greater health situation all through Monru and the trees grow quick as do the herbs and flowers. The azure sphere has increased life throughout the city and surrounding areas, and I believe that it is the Elders wish to create even greater benefits with the addition of the Emerald Sphere."

With this, Dlarumei pauses and rests for a moment. She seems to be at the end of her explanation and waits for responses from those who have them.

Shih's contenance indicates complete attention on Dlarumei's delivery. His eyes dart from side-to-side periodically as he ponders various points. When she's done, Shih looks around to see how this information is received. For what he's about to say, it would have been better if the Livyani Priest were present.

"Noble Dlarumei, worshiper of Ksarul, Lord of Secrets, thank you for being so forthcoming. I am less skeptical than inquisitive, especially when missing information could mean the lives of our party. I had a number of questions and thoughts about what you've shared. Some may be best addressed by you, others by our noble Livyani companion, and still others, I suspect, by members of this eclectic group."

"First, I found your statements about the tubeway either enlightening or puzzling. From my time in Tsuru'um (the underworld) and personal contacts with those most familiar with ancient devices, I was under the impression that tubeways riddle Tekumel like wormholes through a rotten dlel fruit. They're one of the most ancient devices and, though some have ceased to function over the ages, were once a common means of rapid travel. The size of some of the tubeway stations, including places for many to rest while a car is coming, argues for this perspective. Until your statements, I was of the opinion that tubeways did not originate on Tekumel, being one of the taken-for-granted means of transportation by the ancients. The relative crudeness of our current means of travel has a number of potential explanations. From my perspective, this information though is only important to grossly assess the abilities of these Masters and Overlords."

Shih turns briefly to Jenge asking, "Noble priest of the Lord of Knowledge, what do you know of these matters?"

Turning back, he continues.

"This brings me to my next question: Masters and Overloads of who, where or what?" Shih pauses for dramatic effect.

"The more you describe the properties of the Azure Sphere, the more I must wonder about its nature and what we are likely to find at the end of our journey. Thinking about what I've heard of its present size, positive properties and where it was found, I have to first wonder whether another culture held it in comparable esteem? We can know this by whether it had to be forcefully acquired. It's initial small size though argues for the contrary. If it was not revered by a then living culture, why, could be very important to know. Where were those that abandoned this fantastically beneficial Sphere in a distant temple? I'm trying to anticipate whether we're going to find the Emerald Sphere being worshipped as a holy symbol by a very intelligent highly magical society such as exists in Monru. A comparable effort to secure the Azure Sphere now would be quite difficult." Shih smiles at his own jest.

"I'm also interested in how you know that the Emerald Sphere is a positive companion to the Azure one? How do you know that the Emerald Sphere is not hostile to it? Are there scrolls or texts that speak of this? If yes, then there is much that I'm hoping you can share about that culture and these devices. Are the Spheres devices? What can you tell us about how and why they grow? What does the Sphere consume as the price to render its many gifts? They sound more like demons or aspects of the Gods. I believe demons ARE one of your areas of expertise. Their color suggests primary affiliation. If, for example, the powers of the Azure Sphere can only be employed by those that worship Ksarul, then the lack in our party of a worshiper of either Dlamelish or She Who Must Not Be Named could prove problematic when acquiring the Emerald Sphere. Perhaps this is where the Livyani Priest will contribute. Your thoughts?"

"Dlarumei, another thought just occurred to me. What if, for all their vast knowledge, the Livyani were unable to understand what they found in the warehouse. Monru and, in particular, Dlarumei's uncle, may have been instrumental in doing the research to unravel those Livyani mysteries. That would have accounted for the Livyani Priest having the keys to enter that first nexus room. Dlarumei, am I close?"

Shih smiles and waits patiently, confident that at least while in this car, he is safe from sorcerous attack.

Dlarumei smiles from behind ebony wood and her tone is light and amused.

“I do not mean to offend, but your whit is dry and cunning, I like it and am thoroughly amused by it. You remind me very much of Kunur and I can see why you two are friends. You are probably the only two worshipers of Sarku with a sense of true humor.â€

“To answer one of your questions, Noble Shih, I am not sure what we will find, if and when we locate the Emerald Sphere of Sighs. No one has been able to see or predict that with any clarity at all. Perhaps that should be a warning of sorts, but there is strong evidence that the sphere we seek is another life enhancing object, when treated well and with care, and that is why we seek it. It may very well be guarded with a powerful force, such as the one you suppose resides in Monru, I guess that will be our surprise.†She says with a slight whimsical tone in her voice.

“As to the companionship of the two sphere’s, we have translated scripts and the like which put the two together in a positive tone, one that is beneficial to planet and persons. It is our intent to bring them together to enhance our lives and perhaps the lives of all those on our world. I realize that these are lofty ideals, but apparently none of us had anything better to do.†She adds with a touch of jest to help lighten the mood in the car.

“It is like many things of the ancients, and possibly from before them, that we are not sure of how they work, just that they do. Some items we have found help us and others hinder us, but before we acknowledge their presence we are not sure of the result. So it is with this Emerald Sphere of Sighs. By all that is read and planed and understood, there should be a positive result in its finding. But we simply cannot tell until that day arrives and we experience first hand the attributes or defeats of uncovering the orb. Your inquisitive nature brings forth many questions Shih, I know that the others in this party share many of them, and in fact, many of them are shared by me as well. I only have some answers, noble priest, and the rest are questions that can only be answered by the events as they unfold.â€

“Your color theory of the Spheres sounds plausible, and has been brought up countless time by the table of truths. It may be the reason why the Azure Sphere reacts so well in Monru under the care of primarily Priests of Ksarul. But there is equal representation of all the major sect and they all have access to the sphere.â€

“One of the reasons why the Livyani Priest is with us, is for the very thought that there may be some Demonesque qualities present when we arrive at the Emerald Sphere’s location. Though we have no idea really, so the “better safe than sorry†theory comes into play. That is also why this party was so diverse in its original construction. It has only become more so as we travel forward, and that is to our benefit.†After this she takes a short pause and a feeling of more serious thoughts and tones seem to prevail as she continues on.

“Your last thought, Noble Priest of the Worm Lord, is not too far off. There are many, many ways in which Monru has worked with the Livyani in their uncovering of the artifacts. It is true that we posses some very key knowledge about some of the items found in the vault. The Livyani are, by no means an ignorant people, but they do lack the experience of dealing with such items. There had been several accidents involving several of the items before we arrived. These accidents encouraged us to assist the Livyani in an effort to protect both the people and the items. I will not lie and tell you that the elders motives were as altruistic in their motives as to simply be aiding others. There were certainly self-interests involved, of that there can be no doubt. But that is how things were done then and that is how they are done now. Part of working with the Livyani, in their own cities, on their own land, is that many items that are found belong to them, or so they claim them at any rate. There is no doubt that some of the temples in Livyanu have some artifacts that we are unaware of. Or that they possess things that the elders wish they did not have. But there is little to be done about that. We have kept an admirable, cooperative relationship with them for a long time, but that doesn’t mean that things don’t slip away, or even in the case of our traveling companion, it might mean that the Livyani strike out on their own to investigate their theories and agendas. I have no idea what the Livyani Priest was doing with the Queen and her ilk, which was news to me as well. But his previous failure did benefit our endeavor. So the answer is yes, with reservations to why the LP might have had a key to the Nexus room.â€

With that Dlarumei sighs and her shoulder slump. She then, inhales deeply and stretches a bit, twisting her back from one side to the next. You can hear the bones in her back crack and pop as she adjusts her spine and shoulders. She then sits up straight again and looks directly at Shih.

With that Dlarumei sighs and her shoulder slump.

At this point, Jenge clears his throat quietly from the back of the car.

"For whatever it may be worth, the basics of the situation in Monru we have just heard described match what I recall hearing from Thumis' representatives there. I believe I also understand the Livyani link, to some extent, although perspectives may vary." Another of the scholar's slight smiles.

The priest looks over his shoulder, then back again at his companions in the car. "The nature of this train, and the differences between it and the tubeway cars that are more familiar to us, is also in accord with certain theories I am aware of. Some of those theories would hold that the riches we may find on this line would far surpass what we might normally encounter in the Underworld. The nature of what we find may be particularly enlightening, and I am quite excited. We may be in a position to posit our own theories upon our return; I for one certainly intend to. But at this stage, I do not believe we are in a position to determine whether this line predates or postdates the better-known tubeway system."

With a slight crease of a frown showing, the cleric gestures vaguely towards the cab of the car. "Might I ask if I am alone in my concern for the condition of the towing sphere? I like not the irregular flashes coming from it. Do they not seem like symptoms of a mechanism that is breaking down?"

I would think that this would be a prerequisite to representing your interests on this quest. Am I right?"

"Noble lady, I note also that you speak deftly around the nature of the care required by the Azure Sphere. Its price must be high. Can you tell us more? I am also hearing for the first time about the extent of trust you extend to our Livyani companion. This device we seek is a prize that he will not want to see benefiting those in Monru or the Priest Kings. There are those who can walk vast distances across the planes as easily and in as much time as I might take to walk across this floor. One might view this High Priest of the Horned One of Secret's desire to spend time tending to our slaves as a quiet insult telling us exactly the regard with which he holds most of us. I will say this plainly, though this Livyani wishes to be ignored, it is folly to do so! Lady, when the time comes, can you neutralize him?"

Turning to Jenge, Shih smiles and arches his eyebrows.

"I am obviously intrigued by your statements about this tubeway and its potential. I have been in a tubeway car that broke down and was repaired in transit. Quite an exciting experience. Looking at the device that pulls us behind it, I don't believe we will be as fortunate."

Shih pans the car, looking from face to face.

"Come now, if we are indead a team, I would hear everyone's thoughts about all of this. Now's the best time, especially with our Livyani companion giving us a bit of privacy."

If this car stops going forward, will it roll back? How can we open the doors if need be? How could we propel the craft ourselves if we wanted? Would we want to? And what of our slaves, porters and the rest of our belongings? Can we open their car?

Shouldn't we prepare for these possibilities?

“Battle mage, you have a point there.†He says while standing with a somewhat concerned look on his face. “And Noble Jenge’s observations are also well taken.†Orun looks about the cabin with a look of frustration on his face then his eyes return to Nesh.

“I must apologize my noble comrade, thought I have traveled only once before on a tubway, I apparently become all to accustom to its comforts quickly and let it lull me into a false sense of security. I thank you and Jenge for keep your thoughts and wits about you, this could be a deadly situation indeed. As I said, this is only my second time in a tubway car and this one is completely different from my first experience so I have nothing to base any judgments on. Note: Ssrivan is being played by the GM for a short time as his owner is on a trip that has him out of touch for about a month.

As Orun and Almodhim stand and, with some of the others, start looking for a way to safeguard the group inside the moving car, there is a large jolt that causes the whole train to shake. Ssrivan, Jenge and Shih quickly look through the front cabin, out the front windscreen and out into the surrounding tunnel. The dark medal sphere continues to march onward, seemingly without concern, while several large purple-blue bolts of lightning fire off before it. As Churisan and Orun stand up behind them to also get a look out the front, the small group of five watches as the dark sphere drops heavily to its left and then rights itself to continue on. Only but a matter of seconds later does the train you’re riding in shutter and sway, dipping to the left and then returning back to normal with a rocking jolt. Those in the front car can feel as the rear car goes through the same experience, though with much more concerned voices being raised.

Ssrivan is the first to offer a plausible solution.
“It is possible that the track that the cars are running on is damaged in some fashion.†he says, knowing that this is an obvious possibility. “But I also think that there is a correlation between debris in the tunnel and the flashing of the dark sphere. Though I am not entirely sure, I would venture to guess that the flashes are a high energy of some sort that is vaporizing items in the path of the sphere. That would at least explain the seemingly random manner in which these flashes occur.†He pauses with one eyebrow lifted in a questioning look, and then continues.

“We just saw several extremely large flashes and shortly after that we experienced the rough ride of the train. I would venture another guess that this was due to a large section of the tunnels roof having fallen onto the track, perhaps a long time ago, and when the flash vaporized it, the damage the debris had caused remained. That is what we felt as we rode over it.â€

He looks around again in the anticipation of some other thoughts.

We are traveling slowly and I do not believe that this tunnel is pressurized. I might be wrong and with my method of finding the answer one of two things would happen. We would be fine, or we would all be sucked out to our deaths. Perhaps your experiences would lend us some clarity here?â€

A normal tubeway car will not function with its door open. Hitting the button to open a normal tubeway car door will not open it as a safety precaution. That said, this car is different so it might work. There's probably some air outside the tubeway car now. Still, as deep as we are, I have little confidence that it's breathable. Perhaps the front vehicle will interpret something outside the car as a foreign object and zap it. No ... unless there's a compelling reason to abandon this car, let's be patient and hang on. This may be another time when simple methods and a little muscle and sinew would do us better than extra-worldly energies. What say you, learned Churisan? Can we not devise some method by which we could arrest the unpowered motion of these cars, should that become necessary?

I am also concerned with our passengers and belongings in the rear car. We would benefit greatly if we could communicate with someone (like the Livyani priest) who could help in this matter. Or maybe opening a portal for one car's occupants to move to the other. These might be a better use of your frustrated magical energies.

Shih smiles at Nesh's jest, if jest it is. Shaking his head and laughing quietly, Shih envisions the attention he will draw as he walks into Sarku's temple with an undead that looks remarkably like Neshkriuma except that he's been flattened into a paper thin wafer.

"Nesh, I'm not entirely comfortable with the idea of your tampering with the operation of this tandem tubeway car. Assuming there's breathable air outside (a very big assumption) and that you can somehow get the front door open while this car is moving, then you might be able to briefly arrest the fall of this car if you can throw out a reinforced rope with a grappling hook. I suspect though that the rope would snap. In my opinion, opening the door poses too serious a risk. I would be interested in Dlarumei's and Ssrivan's perspective on this though." ;)

The Scholar-Priest listens with half an ear to the general discussion regarding potential failure of their motive power. His face shows his irritation as he attempts to follow both the general discourse, and Shih's attempts at a private conversation.

Finally, he comments on the ideas of his companions.

"Good Fellows, Ssrivan may have something there in his postulation regarding the sphere's flashes." A nod of acknowledgment, and an encouraging smile, to Ssrivan. "Perhaps there is no malfunction. I don't know how comfortable I am with taking unnecessary risks, though." He smiles slightly in self-deprecating fashion, and his fingers twitch slightly until he intertwines them.

"We have a great deal 'riding' on this venture, if you'll forgive the pun; not only our lives, but the interests of our clans and temples will be 'impacted' should we experience a brief free-fall followed by a close introduction to an immovable object." Jenge clearly looks pleased with his choice of words, and pauses momentarily for a sign that his wit is appreciated. He takes a breath and continues.

"Shih's comment on magic use while surrounded by so much metal is to the point, however I for one am not sanguine enough to accept an end to life on this plane without struggling to save myself." A brief nod to the Priest of Sarku. "I acknowledge that most cars ride in vacuum, and ours are equipped to do so. But if the tow-sphere's power should fail, I'd certainly risk opening the doors and breathing a little vacuum. Does anyone have a lucid argument against such action?" Another pause, but since the lecturer's question was rhetorical he continues almost immediately. "Here is how to open the doors. Please, do not hesitate to do so should the tow-sphere break down and we begin to fall." He demonstrates.

"Now, failing all else, we can cast ourselves from the car and walk on. But should we wish to try arresting the train's fall, perhaps it would be possible to wedge something in between the wheels. This may not be necessary, and the train may save itself, but it would be well to discuss this. Have we anything that might serve, Ssrivan? Churisan? Nesh?"

Rubbing his chin, the Priest of Thumis rambles on. "Saving the train would serve little purpose, I think, except perhaps giving all the riders, including the slaves, time to unload. If the train cannot move save to crash, of what use is it to us? Also, the Lady Dlarumei may know more about the safety devices on this particular type of train." A raised eyebrow to the Lady.

A brief moment, and then with a rather sheepish look, "One final comment; we seek a sphere. Our fate now rests with a sphere." He gestures forward. "Coincidence? Perhaps."

“Nobles all†Dlarumei starts, “ I feel that your concern is genuine and I do not relish the thought of hurling backwards down the immense amount of tunnel that we have progressed through, while singing our death songs or being released into a tunnel filled with unbreathable air. So, as Churisan, most wisely suggests, we should just sit back and let the devices of the Ancients serve us. They were created to do so in the first place, so I am sure that there are safety precautions,†she turns to Jenge.

“ There should be a device that can stop the tubway car in case of emergency. Or so there are on the other tubway cars that I am familiar with. Though I will confess that this is the first time I have been on a car such as this in a situation like this one. At the same time, I, like Jenge, am not opposed to leaping from this metal box if things do start to go down hill.†She smiles at her punish attempt and continues on. “ At that point I would take my chances in the tunnel rather than listen to song of death, even though I am sure that with Hrissu singing them, they would be most beautiful.†She slightly bows in Hrissu’s direction and then continues.

“If it helps to ease anyone’s mind, once outside the tubway car, we will be able to use magic without peril and I am sure that there are those among us who can take on that challenge and protect us all for quite some time. Not only that, but if we have trouble getting out of these cars, our Shaman uses magic at a different level and quite possibly does not have the same restrictions as the rest of us do, or so it is my impression.â€

She then starts to look around the cabin to see who was listening to what and what their reactions were.

"I can say a little about the Azure Sphere. Ssrivan and I were in its presence in Monru. It seemed like a benign demon: it didn't speak, but you felt the presence of a mind. A female mind, it seemed to me. I was greatly at ease there, and you could feel her happiness that you had arrived, and the joy she found in contact with a person. The Sphere sits in the middle of spherical chamber underground, and those in the chamber she can lift up, so that they seem to fly like birds. Some time ago someone speculated that the Sphere might have a link to Ksarul. I do not believe this is correct. I would not be surprised though, if she was related to Avanthe. A powerful servant perhaps, for I could also sense the power in that place." Churisan seemed to relax as he spoke, and smiled wistfully. "We went to it after the feast our first night in Monru. Later the hostel was attacked by Flame priests and non-humans and the next day we left the city, so there wasn't time to discuss these things. Ssrivan might have learned more while we were there. I have no training in the arcane arts, so perhaps my mind was not as open to her. If the Emerald Sphere is similar, then it would be a blessing to bring it forth to the Empire. If it is not, then we should fear it, for if it is as strong as its blue cousin, it could smite us all in an instant." He paused, thought for a moment, then added: "It will be important to see if the Emerald Sphere is intact. The Azure Sphere was not, and was eager to regain its lost pieces -- it was clear that its power would be greatest when it was whole."

Always upward, and always in a left hand turn, corkscrewing upward towards some destination that none can even guess about.

Ssrivan remarks that the frequency of the troubled spots along the track and the frequency of the flashes have increased somewhat and that the tunnel itself seems to be in greater disrepair than just a few minutes ago. Dlarumei sighs a long sigh and turns to Shih.

"Noble Priest of Sarku", she says with some irritation, "I know that you are hungry for information, I understand your wanting to know every last tid-bit and cornel of facts and impressions, but I have neither the time, desire, nor inclination to accommodate you on every level. Her words are strong but neither insulting nor demeaning."

"What Churisan has told you of the Azure Sphere I cannot elaborate on. For I do not know much more that what he has told you. The Sphere does not speak to me, nor I to it. I have been in its presence many times and have enjoyed the comfort that it supplies, but it has not, to my knowledge, exacted any toll for what it offers me. I can tell you that I enjoy being in its presence and it has been a part of my life for a long time."

"As to the Sphere not being whole. When it was found, all those years ago, it was in an abandoned temple. Or so it seemed to be abandoned. The walls were faded with age; the floor thick with dust, and the dank smell of ages gone by undisturbed remained stale in the air. The sphere stood on a claw shaped pedestal, firmly grasp in the carved stone setting, like a fine jewel set in the center of the room.  The stone claw had obvious markings on it where someone or something had unsuccessfully tried to hack off the fingers that held the sphere in its grasp. There were signs of magic gone badly all around the chamber and the bones of human and non-human bodies lay strewn around the circular chamber. It seem that perhaps one of the attempt to free the sphere only succeeded in splintering off a shard that was no where to be found. This is the missing piece that Churisan has referred to."

"The story continues that one of the priests of Ksarul, in the party that came across temple, took pity on the sphere in a manner that the sphere reacted to. It started with a soft, blue glow, deep within the center of the melon sized orb, and began to grow in intensity as the priest spoke words of comfort to the captive object. To make this story, which is incredible long as it was told to me as a child, shorter, the priest along with three temple guards remained in the temple of the Azure Sphere for three months without food or water, and when they emerged, they carried the radiant Azure Sphere with them. All four were well and in remarkable form, they showed no signs of any wanting or deprivation. They brought the sphere back to Monru and mounted it in a small cavern chamber under the city."

"The story continues on to say that the four of them lived for several hundred years, and even some tales tell of at least two of them that still live today, though I find that just to be childlike fantasy and folly. But some of the facts are, that as the sphere was cared for and nourished itself somehow, it grew in size. The cavern grew in size to accommodate it as well. The cavern went from its irregular shape into a spherical shape that mirrored the exterior of the Azure Sphere itself. The cavern, as it is today, is enormous, and the Sphere is as large as any temple. To be in its presence is a marvelous thing and to feel its warmth and generosity is a tremendous thing. Ssrivan and Churisan experienced a brief encounter with the sphere and I am sure that they understand some of what I am talking about."

She pauses briefly as the tone of her voice had become rather excited as she spoke of the Azure Sphere and she takes a moment to calm herself.

"You ask me if I can neutralize the Livyani priest. I tell you that he is a powerful man and revered amongst those who worship the Horned One of Secret's. He is also an honorable man, for a Livyani, and one who I know will fulfill his obligation to this party as he was commissioned to do. There is no telling what he will do after that, but we will all be done with the quest and warm in the comfort and praise of our clan houses when that day arrives. I cannot guess as to whether he wishes Monru to have the Emerald Sphere of Sighs or not, but I do know that he is bound to return it to Monru and that is his intent."

"As to whether I could neutralize him, as you put it, I would chiefly have no reason to do such a thing, but if it were my obligation to do so, I doubt that my powers alone could match his, and I have no desire to find out. It is true that I have studied some of his ways and magic's, but he has been perfecting his talents for many more years that I have even been a part of life. Thought he is quite possible more out of his element the further we travel from Livyani, I don’t know, but I do know that the differences in how we use magic is of significance to our journey. This would also explain the reason why we are blessed with the company of our good Shaman."

"There is no doubt in my mind that the Livyani Priest is much older than he looks and perhaps that is why he does not take the impatient, young mans, approach to all this. Many years have made him understand that all things come in time, whether good or bad, they will come. We must only be ready for what presents itself now. I know that this is his philosophy in part, and perhaps you confuse that with treachery. I have known him for over ten years, and I have never found him to be treacherous. Annoying and secretive, yes, but not treacherous. I can understand your concerns Noble Shih, but let me please be assuring that we have far greater dangers in what lies ahead than that in what rests in the car behind us."

"I have put my trust in him as well as in all of you, we are in this together and we will need one another in significant ways before this is all over, I am sure of that. We were not brought together by happenstance. Each of us serves a purpose; even those who we have picked up along the way are not here simply by chance. It is my belief that the Azure Sphere in some fashion aids us. I am not sure how or by what means, but I have felt its presence from time to time on this journey, primarily when this party has come across some one new. When we met you for example, and before, when we came across Almodhim and Urutlen, and again when Jenge was discovered. I have known that each of you were significant to our journey by the feelings that fell upon me when encountering you. It is the same feeling that I get when in the presence of the Sphere itself and so I take it as a sign of your importance."

"More than this I cannot offer you, Noble Priest of the Worm lord, I hope that in some way this helps to satisfy your thirst for knowledge, if not in whole, at least for a time."

"If I may say so, I'm certain that all of our company is grateful that you have chosen to answer the Worm Priest's questions, Lady Dlarumei. While reticence is not unusual in the world, in my opinion it can serve no useful purpose here. We are all intellectuals, magicians or people of consummate action. Another small bow to Shih. "Thank you for your persistence. If it is not too presumptious, may I say that your appetite for knowledge is a gift beyond measure. Pray use it well."

He surveys the remainder of the group briefly, asking "Does anyone have anything else to add? I'm especially interested in discussion of how the spheres may relate to specific gods and their followers, and to the possibility that the sphere we search for will be anathema to some or all of us."

Throughout all this, the priest of Thumis has remained rather expressionless. At this point, however, he appears to be clenching his jaw. "And I would truly like to discuss our Livyani Priest's talk of someone or something 'falling on a knife,' something that travels in pairs and that we must watch for. "While I continue to have questions, especially about the Livyani priest's motivations and objectives, I see now that these questions will only point out machinations of which you ... and now all of us ... are aware. If you have the mental ties to the Azure Sphere that you describe and it's powerful enough to manipulate all of us into being in positions to assist this quest, then any threat posed by any member of this group to this quest would also be known to you. In short, we must all accept the Livyani on faith."

"I do though have one final question that I'm hoping that you will now answer about him. I look around us and see people who I have agreed to support with my life. They have equally pledged their good names and that of their clans in this service. However, we still do not know the Livyani's name. Clearly, his name would be one that is known to some or all of us, else why hide it? Is he a Livyani royal or, perhaps, one of the ever-living wizards?"

"Oh, my, one of the ever-living wizards, noble Shih, I think he is quite far from that lofty arena. He is truly a high level priest and a man of many talents and abilities, and perhaps he strives to become some one as powerful as an ever-living wizard. But from what I know of this man, he is no ever-living anything."

"I grant you that ten years is not a long time to get to know a person completely, and as you have seen, he keeps to himself quite often and shares little. This has annoyed the elders of Monru for a long time, but his skills and dedication to the cities ideals and the Elders have kept him in high favor for a considerable many years. I am almost as certain that he is not royal, certainly not by demeanor or custom. I mean, perhaps he is a forlorn heir or one who rejects his title, like Hrissu here. He could be, I guess, but I have never heard anything that would bring speculation to that area nor have I been lead to believe that he has royal connections."

"But in all seriousness, I will say this; he has no rivals or challengers to his station in and amongst those of his ilk. And I have seen many a high level priest of his sect show him great respect. So he has earned both respect and fear from his own, but that is the way of the Livyani as I have been exposed to them."

"I agree with you that my connection with the Azure Sphere would have alerted me to anyone who would do harm to those on this quest, now that you mention it. I had not considered that possibility before now, but you are probably right with that assumption."

"And Jenge, you are correct as well, she says turning in his direction. Reticence serves no purpose in this gathering or in our quest. I thank you for being able to point this out to me. The ways of Thumis are wise in many areas and you do your patron well by your actions and by your words this day."

I only mentioned that it gave me a good feeling when we encountered those of you who have been added to our rank. Then I agreed with Jenge that it would alert me to anyone who would do harm to those on this quest. Thus far I have no proof of that second statement in one fashion of the other, it was just a human logical step from one idea to the next. I am sorry if this seems like I am switching back and forth on this issue of the Sphere, but I am, this instant, trying to figure out what the connection is and I am, perhaps, thinking out loud when I agree with Jenge. Come to think of it, I felt nothing when we were attacked, not in any of the situations. So that would be something else to put into the equation."

She turns her attention to Neshkriuma and asks him, "who is playing masquerade that you know of noble battle mage? What have you uncovered, or think that you have uncovered?"

Noble Shih, I have been watching the other car for some time and have observed nothing of world-shattering import. Admittedly, my powers of discernment may be inferior to yours, especially since you seemed to have some sort of direct contact with the other car. Pray, inform us as to how you became aware of the fate of the Livyani's 'victim?'

"Noble Neshkriuma, I wish that I did have the ability to discern clearly what is happening in the other car. Alas, I saw Jenge staring out one of the windows and simply asked what he was looking at. Not very spectacular, but delivery is everything." :)

Turning to Dlarumei, Shih sighs while tucking his upper lip behind his lower.

"So, while studying demonology and tubeway artifacts at and below the temple of The Horned One of Secrets in Farsha for your formative years, you never learned the name of the High Priest? OK, I must accept this. My thought then is that those in Monru actually made their agreement with this Temple and more specifically, this High Priest. Guarding his name may be a way of preventing the Vru'uneb from tracking him down. When one of their own leaves the hma fold, especially one of his power and knowledge, I suspect that this is viewed unfavorably. Every effort would be made to find him. Thinking out loud, I'm also guessing that all that prevents some kind of reprisal against that temple and potentially Monru is their continued inability to find him."

From: Dlarumei Ba'ashcha [2003-05-03 15:18:05]
Subject: True, the obvious is NOT so obvious.
"Your suppositions about the Livyani Priest are certainly one of many possibilities. He has his reasons, and I have always respected his wish to remain as he is. As you must also know, noble worshiper of the worm lord, some forms of magic can be used against a person simply by knowing their name. I do not know what his name is, nor does it matter to me what any of the rest of the party wants to call themselves, as long as we stay focused and perform our duties."

"And just one little question, Shih. Why would you assert that I spent my formative years in Farsha or in any particular temple? Do you know more about me than you let on, or are you probing for more information, or perhaps jumping to conclusions with the conjectures you have made."

Dlarumei's voice is smothered in dry whit. It is obvious, by her tone that she does not expect an answer from the Worm Worshiper, but is simply making a statement.

Behind his deathmask paint, Shih's mouth turns up gently.

"Sorceress, as the tubeway warehouse is under Farsha and this warehouse represents the main reason for Monru forming an alliance with those in Livyanu, then it seemed reasonable to me that you spent a great deal of time studying the artifacts there."

"So, you didn't study sorcery and demonology in Farsha. Were your studies then in Tsamra or perhaps where our own personal High Priest of The Horned One of Secrets held sway? I AM though forced to note that you did NOT deny that the agreement was between Monru and that temple. Lord Ksarul, Master of Secrets and Doomed Prince of the Blue Room, would be most proud of you. You dissemble masterfully."

"The lack of significant ormuz (Livyani tattoos that by their beauty and sophistication indicate family, status, temple and sometimes sorcerous focus) causes me to wonder about how one so evidently low in status could rise so high. He truly must be amazingly adept at magic though not demon summoning. If he were adept at that, then I would expect him to have ormuz at least as intricate and beautiful as your own. Perhaps he's a magical savant such as yourself. Or ... perhaps he's not a Livyani at all. Now THAT would be truly strange!"

"La, Shih, the one thing we *do* know about the Livyani is that he is a sorcerer of power. Could he not disguise himself with magic? hiding or changing the look of his tattoos as it suits him? It seems fruitless to make more of this unless you know for certain what he looks like. I'm not sure just what happened when we left Monru, but it seemed to me that the Livyani disguised himself as a high-ranking Karakan priest, quite successfully for a time. Hrissu seemed to have detected the change first, perhaps he or Deshnah can explain further."

"It doesn't matter what the Livyani tells us, we won't know who he is or what he truly looks like. What if everything we're doing, as well as activites in Monru, were a Livyani machination?! Noble Dlarumei continues to play us like a fine instrument at the direction of that Vru'uneb puppet master. So what DOES that make Dlarumei?"

Shih looks around the car to see how others are adding up the information they've heard.

"Dlarumei and Churisan, I must think further about what both of you have said. I now believe that the man we know as the Livyani Priest is truly Livyani. Things are becoming clearer."

"What does it make me?!? I'll tell you Noble Worm Worshiper." Dlarumei says with a rather indignant tone. “It makes me rather annoyed that you would make such slanderous accusations in public with no proof and nothing to justify your far-flung ideas. Are you trying to cause discord amongst us or are you simply so curious that you cannot help yourself? I truly hope that it is the second option, and so let me quell your curiosity a bit before this gets out of hand."

"No one here is working for the Livyani, quite the contrary as a matter of fact. Though it is absolutely none of your business, the Livyani Priest owes my father a life debt and a few other debts that I will never discuss with you. To further remove shadows from your eyes, Noble Shih, my father, in case you have not surmised this already, is Darmkula Ba'ashcha, Chief Elder in Monru, Archivist of artifact of the ancients, one of the High Elders of the Clan of the Azure Gems, Humble priest of the Ancient Lord of Secrets, the Doomed Prince of the Blue Room, the Master of Magic and Sorcery: Ksarul. He is a part of a group of Elders who have commissioned us on this quest for the Emerald Sphere of Sighs, and whom we swore our abilities and talents in its completion. Is it Lan then to start questioning the integrity of those whom you agreed to serve? I think not! If you have questions about the Livyani Priest or doubts about his motives, then those can be addressed here and with him. But do not cast aspersions upon your benefactors when they are not here to refute your words."

She turns her gaze away from Shih and addresses the entire group present.

"I will make this statement now, for all who care to listen. The Livyani Priest is not anyone to whom I answer, nor should any of you. He is just as much a part of the party as any of the rest of you. His talents, though strange to some of you, have come in handy several times and I am sure that they will come in handy again as this journey continues. Just like the talents that each of you bring to this assemblage, he has no greater nor less importance than anyone else here. We all play a roll in this quest, and to doubt any one of us is to doubt yourself."

Though her tone has remained terse yet controlled, you are sure that behind the ebony mask, her face is a dark shade of red, and though the rest of her body remains calm you can see a clenched fist relax when she is finished speaking.

Shih pauses to glare around the car at everyone. In his best strident orator voice ...

"The Livyani Priest takes EVERY opportunity to show us discourtesy. By your own admission noble lady, he's surprised you with his subterfuge and alliance with the dread Hluss! Because he has a debt to your noble father and has acted the part of a friend and mentor, can you still conclude that his actions are noble given all that you now know?"

Calmly, but with great intensity, Shih continues.

"You ... AND the rest of us ... cannot afford to jeopardize this mission! The Livyani's previous actions speak clearly about his willingness to go around you, your father and Monru's agreement with those in Livyanu. Though he has certainly supported our activities during the brief period since I joined this group, I could easily characterize those activities as self-serving."

Shih stands and looks passionately and with great caring into Dlarumei's eyes. In a calm strained voice, he entreats.

"Noble lady and friend of my best friend Kunur, worshipers of Ksarul are trained to see through chaos to discern the underlying pattern. I challenge you to employ those skills now, as dispassionately as our companion Ssrivan, to the Livyani's actions!"

"For my part, I will not bring this up again unless your statements draw me out or I perceive additional threat to this group."

She takes a deep breath and pulls her hand up and places them palm-to-palm with all fingers touching in front of her face. She then pushes her hands down, exhaling till her hands come apart and rest at her side. With a much softer and almost pedantic tone she address the group.

"The eye of any storm rests in absolute calm, while chaos flails all around it. So it must be with us as well. For it is through the calm and serenity within in chaos that allows us to see with clear eyes and open minds. It is in the calm where strength lies and power resides, it is in the calm where reason is found and knowledge makes itself known. Yes you angered me, Noble Shih, but only because you pull me into the chaos and out of my eye of serenity. A game that Kunur loved to play with me as well. Perhaps that is why I am so easily bated by you; there are those similarities in you, both good and bad that bring him to mind. Or perhaps you just like a good verbal sparing match, every so often, to make your blood boil? In any event, I appreciate your words with regards to myself and your concern for the party and to you I offer this."

"I do look deep into the chaos and search for those things that are out of sync in the underlying patterns, and I have, many, many times, regarded the Livyani Priest with such scrutiny. This is why I believe him to be genuine in his commitment to this party and the cause that binds us. His discourtesy to you may be misunderstanding. The Livyani live through ancient customs that we gave up long ago, they have powers that we do not always understand, and what is commonplace to them, we may find abhorrent. Nonetheless, like his manners or not, he has done nothing to circumvent or delay this party in any fashion. Quite the contrary, and therefore I see no reason to challenge him or question his motives at this point. Though I will take your words to heart and regard him dispassionately as you request, the first time the opportunity presents itself."

The priest of Thumis looks relatively satisfied that the Ksarul-worshippers aren't going to send anyone to the Blue Room just yet. He clears his throat gently for attention.

"I am most gratified that we've had this talk. Thank you." He arches one eyebrow. "There is, however, one issue that remains, if you'll forgive my reminder. That of who it is that the Livyani Priest said "fell onto a knife;" which I will conclude is a euphimism. And, since he is "on the look out" for another such person, because they "travel in pairs," there is apparently a death to look forward to."

With a long look over his shoulder, back through the window into the second car, he holds one finger up to his companions in the main car. Then the young man from Jakalla turns back and continues.

"Perhaps I am unusual, in that behind-the-scenes, quiet discussions between those of different castes regarding folks falling onto knives makes me uncomfortable. Especially when I am a member of a small group in a dangerous situation, in the tsuru'um, and one of those having such discussions is obviously not what he appears to be, what he is presented as, and will not give so much as his name or clan."

"Or am I so unusual?" He turns one hand over, as if to drop something from it. "In any case, does no one know what this is about? If we have no satisfactory explanation among us here, then I ask, humbly, that we do not disembark from this train until we can discuss the matter with the Livyanu himself. Lady Dlarumei, since you have a long-standing and close relationship with this pleasant stranger, perhaps you would be so kind as to address the issue with him? Perhaps it is a warrior’s mindset that allows me comfort in our loss, but have we not lost several porters and slaves during our journey. Let our records show that this one perished in our last battle, along with the other nine. Or so it is that we truly believed at that time. As long as we are of one voice on the issue we have nothing to fear. I am certain that one of you has the ability to insure that all those in the second car will forget it all or remember exactly what we need them to. Besides, was it not the Livyani who has brought this spy down? Enough said, who could trust a Priest from Livyanu? We all know what they are like."

"Noble Orun, a couple of observations. As you well know, everything, including the air we breathe, is the property of the Priestking. The Emerald Sphere is known and has been declared to be Imperial property. Any attempt to hide or keep it will result in OAL action against those responsible. If Monru attempts to keep it, then it will be known, unless they hide it amazingly well (after all, the OAL found out about it in the first place). Those in Monru will further have to kill or mindbar all of us. I personally am not over-fond of having my mind altered. Still, it may become a necessity in order to endure the type of questioning we are likely to receive. No, for an item as magnificent as the Emerald Sphere, a perfectly consistent story will not avail us. Imperial truthsayers can use magic to verify anything we say."

Shih turns to Deshnah:

"Noble Shih," Orun starts, "and please take no offence to my words, but it is a good thing that you have not been involved in any major battles, I fear your life expectancy would be rather short."

"We have no proof that the OAL knows anything at all of our quest. We have a note that Nesh read at a glance that none of the rest of us have even seen! I many be out of place, noble priest, but running straight to the extreme in every case is both dangerous and obnoxious. Is there any reason to bring every little thing climax upon the first utterance of any situation? Perhaps it is what has kept you alive all these years, but in my profession, that sort of thinking is what gets you and all your soldiers killed. I suspect that the OAL is here for a different reason, as Nesh suggests. Deshnah, like the rest of us has a history, and nothing to prove in our company. We are in this together through the end no matter who knows what. Even if the OAL is after the Emerald Sphere of Sighs and knows we are looking for it, it is already to late for any one of us. So starting our own grand inquisition without truthsayers is not only ridiculous, but also a complete waist of time! Noting will come of any questioning that people do not with to share. And what if they can’t share what you want? Then what? We have a situation, we deal with it quickly and then we move on. My interest now would be to find the other OAL member in our midst and see what he knows and then decide what to do with him."

Shih continues to focus on Deshnah.

"Nesh, how do you know that Deshnah is an OAL agent?"

"Orun, I'm also curious why you immediately discount Nesh's statements? One way to begin finding the truth is to start with the information at hand. Nesh evidently has information that he believes to be true. He has also plainly said that an OAL agent with Imperial writ claiming the Emerald Sphere was the one killed. Perhaps it is you Orun who do not understand the seriousness of this situation. It's all well and good that your focus is now on finding any additional OAL member in our midst. Just how do you plan on going about this? From your statements, everyone who has proven themselves with this group from the beginning - and that would seem to be everyone - is somehow above suspicion. Odd then that one of the initial slaves or guards was found to be working against our purpose."

I, as a warrior, understand the duplicitness of subterfuge; I cannot believe that some one of you background would feign ignorance as to how anyone could join a group with less than honorable intentions. Besides, when I refer to those above suspicion, I am referring to the eleven of us who are noble, not to servants and porters. They are easily disposed of if need be, so if an OAL agent wishes to disguise himself as one such as these, and he is killed, for any number of reasons at that status level, even for a look of disrespect, it is the OAL agents’ folly for impersonating one so low. He tosses his regard for life to the wind, and in this case, he was swept away."

"And, as far as Deshnah is concerned, I do not recall anyone in this party referring to him personally as an OAL agent. Granted, that it would be a much more clever disguise, and would have gained much further ground, but the minutia that is our Shaman friend and his abilities with magic are not things that the OAL would take many years to impersonate just for this parties sake."

"AND, as to the WRIT, I have neither seen proof that it is Imperial or about the Emerald Sphere."

A large noise reverberates throughout the cabin, preceded by a multitude of purple/blue flashes from the dark sphere. The cabin jerks to the right, tossing everything that is not being held onto to the right side of the car. (It is the right side as you face forward in the car) The train rights itself with another jerk, a slap from underneath the car that lifts most of the occupants off their feet slightly as the beast rights itself again. Those standing on one leg or reclining in comfort find themselves being thrown to the floor, while some of the others manage to hold on to something or ride it out. There is the sound of much metal being struck and reformed into new shapes as the second car repeats the actions of it predecessor. The cabin slows considerable and then a hailstorm of lightning flashes are seen through the front windows just before the dark sphere stops altogether. A low tone emanates for the ceiling followed by a soft female voice, once again speaking words that no one can understand. All this is followed by a red light, which flashes above the door of the cabin. There is another repeating tone and the sound of rushing air, a few tense moments, a green light over the door, and with another rush of air, the doors open wide. There is a moment where many hold their breath, thinking the worst, but soon it is apparent that there is air to breath coming into the cabin. It is cool air, smelling heavily like dirt, spent flint, and strange burnt odors, along with that, all to familiar, stale odor of being underground. There seems to be different and varying mechanisms that belch puffs of air from all around the Sphere and the two-tubway cars. Looking through the doors to the back car, the nobles assembled in the lead car notice that the second cabin is leaning deeply to one side. Apparently it did not come up out of the depression as the first half of the car did. All those onboard stop and look at each other, and in the silence you can hear the car slowly sliding backwards, its breaking mechanism gripping tight to the single rail, but still there is the grinding sound of rail slipping through breaks grasp.

Subject: Hold 'er steady..
Urutlen takes a quick look outside the doors of the front car to see what things/creatures might await us. He checks the severity of the situation in the rear car from his vantage point. He then turns to the nobles and says "does anyone have a spell strong enough to hold these cars in place long enough to get everyone out? If not I am going to go back there and start getting people and supplies out of there. We haven't much time, it would appear."

Churisan responds to Urutlen as he staggers to his feet: "Go now. Even if they can hold the car, they'll need light and a safe place to work." Then he calls to the guards: "Swords. Outside. Defend only." Finally, has he himself moves toward the door, steel sword glittering in the wierd light, he speaks to the priests: "Learned ones, we had best disembark. If any of you could provide light outside it would be helpful."

"Nesh or Jenge, wasn't it one of you that suggested using some of the wood in the second car to jam the wheels? I'd urge that we do that quickly."

Jenge quickly and efficiently gets himself and his belongings off the car and into the tunnel. Once safely there, he looks about trying to get the big picture.

Subject: Sproing!!!
Urutlen springs to the back car to get the people/stuff out of the rear car ASAP. He lets whomever is in charge know what is up and then moves on to moving people and things.

Subject: OUT!
Nesh grabs his things and gets out the door as soon as others are clear of it. He assesses the situation in the rear car hoping not to see a scene of panic.

Nesh scans the scene outside the cars, also, looking for something that can be used to block the sliding car. The grinding noise of the cars slipping is very annoying.

Orun will wait and help others out if they need it, and some if they don't. He will be the last one out, unless someone else really wants to work that aspect, then he will be more than happy to bolt from this deathtrap.

Subject: In the tunnel
If there are no immediate threats outside the cars (tubeway 'bots? resident Underworld nasties?) Churisan joins Urutlen at the second car. He'll immediately start bossing the servants and guards, imposing order with the flat of his sword if need be. If we still have any timbers in our equipment (GM?) he'll have those brought out first.

Subject: And then some
Nesh will help Churisan keep the guards and porters out of harm's way, and get the guards into a defensive posture. As soon as possible, he will order a porter or two to haul the dead body out of the car into an out-of-the-way spot.

Just a quick note:
The timbers were left behind in the fountain room as they were too big to go through the porthole when the party went three but three. In fact, a lot of the big stuff got left behind. At least Adzul and a slave are there guarding it for you. [smirk]
