Chapter 27 - A Complex Complex (Beginning)

Hunger
Shih Nacunya
26 Jun 2004 (23:54)
"Nesh has waited long enough for food. Before he eats one of our slaves, we better feed him. I suspect we're all hungry."

Shih quickly directs the slaves to prepare a quick meal for everyone, but to pack everything immediately afterwards.

"I believe that this moon is Kashi, the smallest of Tekumel's moons. Though it looks small in the sky, that is more a function of distance. We could be exploring for quite some time. The other hemispheres may prove very interesting to all of us. After Dlarumei left the Ancient Ones and before Jenge and I emerged, we asked about ... the Gods and were told that some have passed through here. It's entirely possible that those other hemispheres may lead to other places on this or other planes that are uniquely accessible from here. Pavar certainly spoke of the 20 as beings he conversed with. For all we know, we could encounter almost anything up here, a God or perhaps even an Ancient preserved for just such an occasion. While I appreciate that some of the fighters may not be in their element here, I would strongly urge all of you to seize the day. What we will all see and experience will make each of us legends if we can manage to survive. Also, I would ask the fighters to refrain from attacking anything unless they are absolutely sure it's attacking us. We explore now with the tacit acceptance of the Ancient Ones by virtue of Raumiel. Noble Lady, can you tell us anything more of this place?"

mmmmmm...food
Urutlen Utu-Tengmai
27 Jun 2004 (7:06)
Although Urutlen doesn't feel particularly tired he will pick a spot to sit and eat where he can hear more about where we are going/doing, etc.

Rest and food? Oh, goody, goody!
Neshkriuma Kharsama
28 Jun 2004 (15:33)
The usually quite voluble Nesh has nothing to say about the decision to stay for a while, only a visible relaxing. He will circulate among the guards and porters, encouraging food preparation and setting a rotation among the guards to allow for rest and eating.

Hmmm ...
Shih Nacunya
Jun 2004 (8:55)
"Urutlen, Neshkriuma and Almodhim, what do you two think of all that you've seen and heard here?" Shih's question, more than light banter, has a subtle edge to it.

Hummm, ummm good
Uchang Khereshu
29 Jun 2004 (12:40)
The party busies itself with the prep for a quick diner before traveling onward. Various conversations strike up and people can be seen checking equipment more out of habit than necessity at this point. Dlarumei is seen walking through the kitchen set up with Orun in tow. He seems to keep and eye on Shih for the moment always glancing in his direction, not out of anger, but certainly with suspicion in his eyes. At one point Dlarumei is see bending to touch the sides of a large pot. In the matter of a few moments the pots contents are boiling without there being a fire below it. She steps away smiling and is heard to say quietly, "I’ve always wanted to do that."
Then the call for food, "Lords, nobles all, we have prepared a modest meal for you from what we have in our stores. We would hope that you would enjoy this, if for no other reason than for your nourishment for the road ahead." Followed by a large and respectful bow from the cook and his helpers.

The repast you find to be quite good and the warm stew is most enjoyable and welcome. Tension seems to subside a bit with a good meal and nice drink, and soon you feel full and well off, some even nap a bit after eating. There is not much time for a full rest as Dlarumei address the assemblage.

"Our noble Worm Lord worshiper, Shih, has suggested that this is an extremely good time to explore this moon a bit. I must say that though I am eager to obtain our prize, and that will take some time still, I must concur that to leave here without at least trying to gain something more that we have, would be a mistake on our behalf. Are there other thoughts from any of you?"

Hemispheres?
Churisan Soruna
29 Jun 2004 (14:02)
Churisan joins in the meal. He sits quietly and eats, then asks Shih: "What hemispheres are you talking about? and why do you think we are in another world? We passed through no nexus point. As to exploration, if this place is an abode of the gods as you say, then to linger is perilous, and we should proceed however we may to the Emerald Sphere."

Hemispheres
Shih Nacunya
29 Jun 2004 (14:27)
Gesturing expansively, "Churisan, the Noble Raumeil has said that there are four such rooms as this one in this moon. While we were in contact with the Ancients, we were informed that this was designed to look like a moon from afar, but had broader purpose. The Gods remain enigmatic and fascinating, as always. Philosophical arguments aside, I have had the pleasure of witnessing the awesome might of Sarku first-hand. The glorious sight is etched upon my mind forever! As eclectic as this group is, I do not shirk additional contact. As always, there is much to learn." Here Shih smiles. "I sound now like a Priest of Thumis or Ksarul. We have already passed up so many opportunities in the interest of pressing forward, I will not abandon this one. We are the first humans to set foot here since well before Llyan of Tsamra founded his empire. Don't you marvel at the fact that humans could once create structures such as this? Don't you yearn to learn more of your heritage? Think beyond the tip of your sword Noble Warrior. Your ancestors, like mine, created this!" =)

Who made who?
Jenge Varion
29 Jun 2004 (17:19)
Jenge bows deeply to Dlarumei. “Many blessings upon you M’lady. This bounty is a wonderful tribute to your clan’s honor. I accept with much gratitude.” Jenge smiles warmly as he rises. The idea of documenting the many wonders of his travels is as intoxicating as the nectar of sun-ripened grapes. He takes his portion humbly and finds a place to sit within earshot of the nobility and their servants.

Jenge reflects on all he has seen and done since he had the fortune to travel in the midst of such nobility. The mention of his icon brings another warm smile to Shih. “Opportunities, oh noble sir, are never truly lost, but merely delayed. As unfortunate as these delays are, we must trust they are part of the divine path set before us. Perhaps such things are left so that others may find, or perhaps such things are left to chance. I find the belief in fate fascinating.”

Jenge holds his meal and waits for those of higher stature to begin eating, as is custom. “Our ancestors created many wondrous and dangerous things. It has been the point of much conjecture that it was this same talent, which they fell from grace in the eyes of our Gods. One must tread lightly to prevent making these same mistakes if we believe such things.”

Meals and the Missing
Ssrivan Tlokhar
29 Jun 2004 (18:19)
Ssrivan never even noticed the preparations for a meal. He continued to drift towards the distant wall of the chamber on some inner quest of his own, eventually curling up with his scribe to return to his much-needed sleep. Note that he did not return to the main group, but fell into his slumber near the object of his inquiry.

Ciao time...
Urutlen Utu-Tengmai
1 Jul 2004 (5:32)
Urutlen sits and enjoys what may be their last decent meal for a while. He then gives a bow of thanks to Dlarumei for the meal. "I agree with Churisan in this matter. Although all of this is very strange and intriguing to me, I believe we should be given the information related to our journey, (potential dangers and the like) and then proceed toward our goal." He then sits back and waits for the responses from the rest of the party.

only words
Dlarumei Ba'ashcha
1 Jul 2004 (11:20)
"My Noble Urutlen," Dlarumei says with a smile. "The problem is, that we have no idea what to expect. We are stuck, shall we say, in a strange predicament that is the very reason why the group around you is of such diversity. Though we know what our goal is, and NOW we have a much better idea WHERE it is and a pretty descent idea of how to get there, there are still lots of questions that cannot be answered until we venture forth. We never know what is behind the next door or around the next corner, unfortunately the wisdom granted us by the ancients does not allow for such detail. And that is the curse that goes with this blessing."

"From point A I can see point B, but the path is very foggy and the information that I have been given is extremely old, so some things have changed over the centuries. Landmarks have been worn away by the weather, rivers have changed their courses, mountains have even been raised and rebuild in other locations. All that we are certain of is the idea of the location we need, how we get there and what we find along the way are still mysteries to us all."

"There are certain clues and insights however, such as the tubeway, that help us move forward, and without them our journey would be more difficult and less fruitful, but doable nonetheless."

"Now here is where the next dilemma comes into play. The ancients offer us these insights through various means and different situations, but they are not gifts per say. Some come in the form of challenges, like the great hall and the poolroom before the tubeway station. If we are noble enough to understand and move forward we are granted rewards, if you will, such as this moon that we are on. So, one could argue that we have received the blessing of the ancients and move off of this moon to continue the journey, but in the same breath, one can argue that the real blessing lies within this moon and that we have to go and find it to receive it. In this room there are things that we cannot see or comprehend because we don't have the knowledge to understand these things. But, perhaps if we were to try and gain some of the knowledge, by the exploration of this structure, we may begin to have what we need to see what is barred from us by ignorance and unlock the secrets that our minds are, at this moment, unprepared for. Of course, we could open a door and all be destroyed as well, and that is the risk that we must weigh. To move on, or to pause and possibly gain even more that will help us in our quest. It's hard to say which is better at this point."

where to go?
Churisan Soruna
Jul 2004 (14:18)
"If we were to move on, which way would we go?" asked Churisan. "There is another array of pillars that marked the chamber we arrived in, can we leave that way? Orun found a portal in the floor far off next to the wall. It was a round hatch, closed, but air leaked around the edges. We considered opening it, but thought the locksmith should look at it first." Churisan looks around for Ssrivan when he mentions the locksmith, and scrambles to his feet when he can't see him. Assuming Chur does see the sleeping smith when he looks around, he will curtly order two guards to go and watch over the slumbering man.

Toils
Jenge Varion
1 Jul 2004 (19:56)
Jenge hears the indecisiveness in their leader. He looks in her direction with a warming smile. "My Lady. Heavy is the heart of one who leads. For paths are always foggy. The mantle of command is yours to wield, and though every choice may mean life or death, it grants no quarter." Jenge bows allowing his words to ring out. "I do not assume to speak for anyone else, but I have only one request."

He takes a deep breath, looks Dlarumei in the eyes and winks. "Lead us on the path that feels righteous. Do not back-peddle or waiver from your choice. Assume responsibility for it. Own it. Whether the outcome is good or bad, know that you made it with goodness in your heart. And answer to no one for it." Jenge bows and does not look up again until spoken to.

Noble action
Shih Nacunya
1 Jul 2004 (21:31)
Shih smiles at Jenge's statements, inwardly rubbing his hands together at the prospect of a religious debate.
"Noble Jenge, you speak of righteousness, which perhaps for a worshiper of Lord Thumis is lan (noble). Still, Khomoyi (The Principle of Noble Action) must govern our actions if we are to align with the divine purposes of the Gods that we each serve. For a worshiper of Vimuhla, it is Lan for him to seek dominion through force of arms, defeating the enemy by any means and feeding screaming enemy captives to the ravening flame. I am true to my Lord Sarku's divine purpose by seeking eternal life for the Bakte (psyche) through creation of undead. Sacrifices that a Thumis worshiper such as you would find abhorrent are integral to glorifying Sarku, yet we are both Lan. Sharing of knowledge is lan for you in pursuit of a stable existence where nothing ever changes, while a worshiper of Ksarul such as Dlarumei or Ssrivan seeks knowledge to keep it secret for personal advancement. Komoyi is being true to one's beliefs, however you perceive them. This was, in good part, the basis for some of my earlier concerns. By righteousness, did you mean Lan or were you simply wishing that she ascribed to this noble attribute of your Lord?"

One if by lan
Jenge Varion
2 Jul 2004 (4:29)
"If I have offended anyone in my statement, please know that I did it as one who wishes to spread the teachings of my Lord to those who may not normally get to experience his most divine light." "
It would not be uncommon for one to see the errors of his ways, such as the practice of say, abominations, and realize the righteous path to sit at the hand of my Lord Thumis (Jenge gives a reverent look skyward pausing for a moment as if hearing the words of his lord) "and come into the fold."

"I only meant to give encouragement to this noble child of Ksarul. But as long as you have brought up the practice of... well... might you enlighten me on the noble purpose of forcing one of such devout compliance to the Lord Vimuhla, into slavery in your Lord's servitude by making him ... unliving??" Jenge avoids the word undead as if his tongue should fall from his mouth.

"Does the idea of a most holy exorcism and burial in sacred ground of my choosing after your demise disturb you? Would you think twice before shaping one's .. afterlife if the same should befall your corpse?"
a flicker in Jenge's eyes gleams as if this was an item that bothered him since the spiralling tunnel and the train.

No religion or politics...
Urutlen Utu-Tengmai
2 Jul 2004 (5:51)
Urutlen looks at Jenge and Shih. " I would truly love to listen and perhaps participate in this conversation over our drink of choice once this quest is over. Our energies, however, might be better spent at this time pooling your information to get us to our final goal." Urutlen then looks at Jenge specifically and says. "We have been using a sort of leader by committee as long as I've been on this quest, with certain members stepping up as their expertise fits. I don't see why we would stop doing that now. I believe that method has been working rather well." Then to Dlarumei and Churisan. "I don't pretend to understand much of what is going on in this place or how we got here. I suppose I am starting to get a little excited about actually seeing site of our goal. If we need to gather more information in this place before we move on, then that's what we must do. Ssrivan, as usual I'm sure, will play a key role in all of this. We should wait until he is rested enough to continue at close to full strength." He then waits for the response he is sure will come.

Sight for sore feet
Shih Nacunya
2 Jul 2004 (8:49)
"Noble Urutlen, perhaps you're right. However, we have done little more than gain sight of the path that we must follow. Our path to the Emerald Sphere may still be long unless we can somehow utilize ancient devices to shorten it. For instance, if we were somehow able to secure an air-car from this moon, then we might be able to fly directly to our destination without hindrance. I myself have seen a smaller version of one of these used by ru'un. They truly exist."
Turning to Jenge, Shih answers him.

"Noble Jenge, I would no more impose on a Vimuhla worshiper the burial practices of Belhanu than I would the more invigorating practices of my Lord Sarku ... except in great need. Our group has had deaths, bodies that would have made excellent shedra (undead). I restrained myself because these were not the beliefs of that individual in life and because the need was not great enough."

"Still, when many of our porters and slaves died, I was compelled to raise them. Unfortunately, they could not join us in the light. Now, everyone's burden is increased and the risk greater."

Decisions, decisions...
Neshkriuma Kharsama
3 Jul 2004 (10:37)
Nesh replies to Shih, and interjects into the religious conversation:
"We should all remember, as Dlarumei has reminded us, that our group was FORMED with religious diversity so that we would be better able to accomplish our goals. We need to respect and protect it, rather than to convert others and erode the diversity."

"This quest has, by my reckoning, sped along from place to place, from event to event, as the outcomes of these events have dictated. I am ready to explore and learn while we have the choice to do so."
Nesh has stopped his other activities and awaits the group's reply.

Ssrivan
Shih Nacunya
3 Jul 2004 (15:52)
Now that Ssrivan has examined the pedestal, Shih casts POE and goes over to look a bit more closely within the drawer and around it trying to discern what Ssrivan was so concerned about. It never hurts to learn something new ... unless, of course, it does. :)

After completing his examination, Shih walks over to see what Ssrivan is so interested in.

Power in knowledge
Dlarumei Ba'ashcha
5 Jul 2004 (14:00)
Dlarumei looks to Jenge and says. "Noble scholar priest, I must agree with Urutlen for the moment, these discussions are lan and proper in their right but they gain us nothing at this moment. I appreciate your constantly seeking knowledge and you desire to bring us closer to our goal, but as Urutlen has put it, we choose to lead by committee when it is appropriate, such as in this situation, where there is a non-lethal choice to be made. In more difficult times we rely on those with expertise in a particular field to guide us. You are correct to assume that I am the leader of the expedition, but our practice has been to committee most of our choices or defer to those of grater knowledge. I believe that is part of our success thus far. Thank you from bringing this to the foreground as it has never actually been discussed before. Once again your order brings to the light that which had been fostered in the gray mists of obscurity."
She gives him a knowing nod of the head and finishes her food slowly.

Asking for direction
Churisan Soruna
5 Jul 2004 (14:18)
"Very well, although the learned scholars are determined to dally here in the clanhouse, of the ancients, I ask again, *if* we were to move on toward the Emerald Sphere, which way would we go?"

Great grandmuthah of a trap!
Shih Nacunya
5 Jul 2004 (21:17)
Shih sits near where Ssrivan is reclining, about 400m from the couches in the middle. While he looks briefly at the nearby manhole cover, he relaxes until Ssrivan chooses to stir. He has a pressing question for the man.

Interesting Reactions
Jenge Varion
6 Jul 2004 (4:56)
Jenge eats his meal with a smile upon his face. The reactions of each member were quite curious when concerning or defending their religion. He makes small notations in his small tablet.

He looks about the area sketching oddities in the same notepad. Jenge had become a fair doodler and sometimes the visual image helped him remember or explain things later on. He looks about for things to sketch in his pad.

Time Warp

6 Jul 2004 (16:45)
As things seem to wind down into a restful and reflective atmosphere, a few things are noticed. Ssrivan sends on one of the guards further on towards the wall and the other stays and keeps watch over him as he sleeps next to his scribe. Shih, waiting for Ssrivan to awaken, takes this opportunity to catch up on some rest and reflection as he sits before the locksmith.  The rest of the party seem to gather in the center of the complex and sit and eat and rest as they see fit for the moment.

At the end of this rest period, six hours will have passed and all will be rested and ready for what actions they choose to take.

All Agog.
Almodhim Harisaya
8 Jul 2004 (7:33)
Almodhim has been keeping to herself. She has bound herself to the loyalty of the company, she has pledged to use her warrior's prowess to keep those she's sworn to safe. In the back of her mind, the urge to see this Emerald Sphere of Sighs herself is growing. She sits down, doffs her helmet, and calls for food from the nearest servant. Her food arrives and she sits contemplating the others in the company as she eats.

Jenge Varion
9 Jul 2004 (9:11)
Jenge watches the warrior Almodhim and finds his hand moving freely upon the pad. He red hair is rare amongst those he is used to seeing. He draws rough line eventually blending them into a portrait. If the drawing is good enough, he shall offer it to her. If not, he will squirrel it to the rear with rest of his sketchings.

Psssssst
Shih Nacunya
9 Jul 2004 (10:58)
Shih rises from the hard cold floor with a groan and stretches. Locating Ssrivan, he walks over and disturbs whatever he's doing.
"Noble Ssrivan, Master of Traps and Devices of the Ancients, devoted and beloved worshiper of Ksarul, Lord of Secrets, I was wondering what your plans were to bypass the remarkably powerful trap covering something under the central pedestal? I'm sure you were planning on mentioning this but, with your focus elsewhere, I thought I'd take a moment to inquire. We are, after all, talking about something the Ancients went out of their way to protect in an obscenely effective way. Whatever is there has been undisturbed for more than 20,000 years. I for one am interested."

OOC: While I could have done this offline, the outcome of this conversation will eventually be apparent to everyone. Besides, doing it offline, however realistic, would detract from everyone's participation. :) I'm making an assumption that people are having conversations and they'd inquire about what's happening.

Ignoble end of a good snuggle
Ssrivan Tlokhar
9 Jul 2004 (19:41)
Shih's attentions bring a quick end to Ssrivans most delicious sleep. He will disentangle himself from the comforting arms of his scribe and sit up.

"Ancient trap? That's the one I told you about earlier Shih. You're lucky you didn't set it off with your manhandling of the pedestal. As to bypassing it--I have no plans whatsoever to do so. I have felt and seen the devastating effects of meddling with the contents of such traps. Opening the trap would be a delicious game of den-den, but the contents would be a most disturbing brew. Anything the Ancients shielded so thoroughly has a high likelihood of being unacceptably destructive to the fool unfortunate enough to open its sepulchre looking for treasure."

Ssrivan will then send his scribe off to obtain something for his growling belly as he heads for the guard he has detailed to watch the floor entrance to the tunnels below.

Grub
Almodhim Harisaya
9 Jul 2004 (21:22)
Almodhim's warrior sense is sharpened to a tee. She feels Jenge's eyes on her, but feels no threat. She catches his eye, gives him a brief nod, a soft grunt, and continues to eat with a slight smile on her face.

Exceeded your snuggle quota
Shih Nacunya
10 Jul 2004 (0:39)
"Ssrivan, are you saying that this trap is beyond your abilities or that you are certain that the contents would be ultimately destructive to the one doing it? You who have shown yourself most curious and capable about everything we've seen and, in particular, traps and devices ... I'm trying to understand your reticence. You did mention the trap, but not that it still protected something else beneath the pedestal. Or perhaps, I misunderstood you."

The room
Jenge Varion
10 Jul 2004 (19:50)
Jenge finds Shih's interest in the room curious. He begins the recitation to cast POE himself. Whatever is passing between the nobles of the room could need looking into. He lowers his eyes from Almodhim briefly as he concentrates (labored as it is) on the Spell.

Traps?
Almodhim Harisaya
11 Jul 2004 (8:34)
As soon as Almodhim hears of the possibility of a trap, she dons her helmet. What food she has left is swiftly put down as she concentrates on the spells and conversations around her. She gets to her feet in order to have better access to her sword in case it is needed.

Don't discount the snuggle factor
Ssrivan Tlokhar
11 Jul 2004 (11:51)
"Shih, I have carefully restrained my curiosity on this trip to limit my endeavors to the solution of those traps that were necessary to the continuance of our original mission. I could open that trap--but I choose not to, as it is not germane to our eventual goal. I have dealt with similarly devilish traps of the Ancients before. They have contained, without exception, things which I would have preferred to have left shielded behind those protections."
"My curiosity leads me where it will--I do not lust after the contents of a delicious trap, I revel in the trap's complexities. A beautiful trap is a piece of fine art--I do not destroy it to see what it contains, I destroy it because there is overwhelming need to do so. I see no such need in this case--and neither should you--unless you are the one lusting after power for power's sake?"

Ssrivan then flashes Shih with the cold, secretive smile of his lord and master.

"Besides, this area over here is much more interesting to me--and it lies on our eventual path. I know not how long the watchers below will maintain their patience, but knowing where and how they have access to this chamber would be very useful knowledge indeed--much more so than acquisition of yon Ancient bauble in the pedestal."

By now, Ssrivan's luscious scribe should be returning with some morning sustenance, which he will dive into with gusto.

Hrissu's post
Uchang Khereshu
11 Jul 2004 (16:41)
Hrissu, after just a small bit and drink begins singing tunes of comfort. The acoustics in the dome are not all that good so he sounds as though he is singing from outdoors. Nonetheless, his voice is strong and pure and he matches his own notes with incredible harmonies as only those who worship Dra can. The effect seems to sooth and relax those who listen.

The trap?
Jenge Varion
12 Jul 2004 (12:47)
"I for one think not all doors are made to be opened. The path we are striding seems balanced and true. The elected leadership has given us no reason to tarry." Jenge bows in Dlarumei's direction.

"Noble Ssrivan, these humble eyes of mine enjoy the complexities as well, but I wish to know what they sing to you?" Jenge shows no malice in his eyes. "Sometimes the beauty is in the details." His gaze moves to Shih. "I do so love finding diamonds in the rough. One never knows were power lies, hidden amongst the rabble." Jenge smiles.

12 Jul 2004 (13:49)
Shih walks over to speak briefly to Dlarumei.
"Jenge and Deshnah, would you join me please?"

OOC: Again placing this in public view to improve player inclusion.

"Noble Dlarumei, is it safe to assume that the two special slaves among us are yours? Their psychic energy is unusually strong. If they're OAL or Vimuhla temple, I'm surprised that Deshnah's sphere didn't get them. They're obviously a bit more than slaves and you must be aware of them." :)

the eyes have it!
Dlarumei Ba'ashcha
15 Jul 2004 (20:39)
"Noble Shih, I am glad that you can appreciate the discovery of our two spies," Dlarumei says in a hushed voice to the small group surrounding her.
"They have been here from the very start, along with a third that the Livyani Priest dispatched in the tubway car. Their activity has diminished since that incident, as I am sure you can imagine. They have made no attempt to contact anyone yet and our hope is that they will try sooner or later to report back to someone or by some means, and that we will be able to track their source or contact. I am grateful to have extra pairs of eyes to keep tabs on those two. Although it seems more that the male slave is the spy and that the female is spying on him. These matters are always so convoluted; it's hard to make any sense of them. I would suggest that we try not to let them know that we know, they are fairly proud of themselves thus far, but as we all know, that surly comes before the fall. It is just a matter of time, and I doubt that they can do a thing while we are here in this place. We will need to watch them closely once we return to the ground and the shadows that lurk there. And thank you to both of you for not setting the alarm when you discovered them. You are quite wise in your choice to speak with me first."

She bows and points of somewhere as though lecturing about the room or some other far off discussion.

Kidjal at our throats
Shih Nacunya
16 Jul 2004 (8:25)
"While I know they're useful to us as porters, they will likely poison us as we near our goal. Perhaps they might even think that killing us after we leave this place would be desirable; they have already learned so much! In my opinion, you or the Livyani priest should mindbar them from acting against our interests. Those abilities should also be used to understand some of the forces arrayed against us. I also appreciate the counter-argument that since we don't know with any certainty, then we can stand up to such a probe into our actions by the Imperium. We might be able to transport them to the isle of the Black Ssu or some place equally remote, which could be a good middle ground."

The grim look on Shih's face indicates he's quite prepared to kill those two in a casual way.

large things speak
Orun Vu'urtesh
17 Jul 2004 (16:12)
Orun, who never seems to be too far from Dlarumei, steps forward and says, in somewhat of a stern tone,

"Noble Shih, no disrespect intended Worm Lord Worshiper, but these slaves and porters have been known to us for quite some time. Long before you became aware of them. I am sure that all has been weighed and balanced many times over for the security of this group. As you know the plan evolved when the third spy was sent on his most excellent voyage to the isle. But, thank you for bringing it to our attention; we should not grow complacent with regards to the other two."
There is a slight smirk that flashes across the warrior's face as he stands most heavily with his hands on his hips.

Ssrivan finally begins moving about in the distance. He is seen to confer shortly with one of the two guards accompanying him before he begins some purposeful wandering about in the distant reaches of the chamber again with his scribe and the other guard.

Jenge smiles falsely watching the ego-battle between the nobles. The sphere's influences tend to appeal to the greed in people. Everyone wishing to gain it for fame and fortune. Jenge begins to wander off to resume his drawing of Almodhim. He prays to himself for clarity.
"This alliance of convenience will surely breakdown once the sphere is within arms reach." He whispers uncomfortably to himself. He prays for clarity, guidance from Thumis.

Seeing Almodhim had donned her helmet. He resumes his drawing from memory until the party begins to move again.

That grey matter is rock

Responding to Orun, "Noble warrior, what would you think of a commander who did not constantly reassess his adversaries in light of changing battle conditions? Conditions have surely changed for us all. We are not renyu (intelligent dogs capable of elementary speech) to slavishly follow our masters without thought. I simply offer my humble recommendations, much as I'm sure you would if you had a perspective on this or any subject beyond the tip of your mighty sword." Shih's intonation is ambiguous.

Turning to Dlarumei, "Noble and beautiful lady, I would be very interested in opening the trap under the central pedestal. What it covers must surely be worth the effort. I suspect that to do so would require someone of your knowledge and ability. Did you plan on opening it? While Ssrivan declaims against exploring this further since it's not our quest, I suspect that his current tracing of the power paths and his sleeping over a major power nexus may have something to do with the pedestal. May I inquire about your plan?"

Ahem... a moment, if you would...
Neshkriuma Kharsama
20 Jul 2004 (20:54)
Neshkriuma has been edging closer to this conversation. His normally jovial mien has been dropped and a worried line that few have seen before is showing in his face.

"Nobles, hear me, please. Do you believe that the presence of these spies should bring us to each other's throats? I think not. This would be playing into the unseen hands that attempt to play us for fools.

It is good, in a manner of speaking, that the third spy has gone to his "reward." He was charged by the OAL to follow and observe Deshnah, and was authorized to command aid from us in his duties. This supposed porter knew of Deshnah's high clan status before the rest of us.

I presume that the other two may have been sent along to ensure that his mission did not go awry. I also assume that they remain hidden because they know they are too far from their sources of power to remain among the living (or, indeed, even complete their mission, whatever it may be), if they are discovered now. I propose that we consider these options:We may continue to watch them without taking any action except to be more vigilant in our protections. We may entice them (somehow) to reveal themselves. Or, we may send them to whichever oblivion seems most appropriate (or permanent).I suggest the first option for now, followed sometime soon by the second.
Your thoughts, nobles?"

Taking a pole
Shih Nacunya
21 Jul 2004 (6:50)
Shih closes his eyes as the muscles in his forehead contract. Perhaps he has a headache or a sudden increase in tension.
"Neshkriuma hiKharsama, how came you by this information? How do you know that the recently deceased knew about our noble Deshnah?"

With a pleasant smile and calm voice, Shih describes what might occur in a worst case scenario ...

"You speak glibly of killing the Priest King's anointed servants. They are going to make examples of us. After Imperial telepaths sift every bit of knowledge from our minds, they are going to place a three inch sharpened pole into the appropriate nether orifice and slowly lower us, periodically healing, so that we last two to three days. We will not be given the consideration of a quick puncturing of our hearts. They will carefully avoid major internal organs, until that pole dislocates our jaws emerging from our mouths. Lord Chiteng will be most pleased at the spectacle of it all!"
Stating the obvious ...

"The Omnipotent Azure Legion have at their disposal ALL of the resources of the Five Empires and ALL of us are known." Isn't that special.
After a bit of pondering ...

"Noble Dlarumei, I must believe that given centuries to plan, those in Monru and within the Temple of Ksarul believe they have sufficient leverage to protect their own. Hopefully, this also extends to the rest of us?"
Shih rubs his face wondering what fated him to ever accept this assignment. He then looks at Nesh and Dlarumei expectantly.

OOC: As pointed out by Professor Barker on the Tekumel Board, such ancient artifacts as we're now dealing with would be approached by the Imperium much the way the US supposedly approached Roswell. Only the Temples have enough political clout to retain such artifacts. This is one of the main reasons why such finds are kept secret.

OOC Answer to Roswell
Ssrivan Tlokhar
21 Jul 2004 (17:13)
This particular artifact hunt is likely way beyond even something one of the Temples could shield--it would probably take a major Temple alliance to keep this from falling into Imperial control. Monru has just such an alliance, so it is possible to succeed without us becoming the proverbial Dri-Ant under the Imperial boot. Temple factions will be a much more dangerous problem--note the pursuit we've been avoiding in adroit fashion along the way (mostly from Change Temples).

Orun Vu'urtesh
22 Jul 2004 (22:39)
"Do not draw assumptions from things that you have no concept of Priest!" Orun's words are directed straight to Shih and are sent on a sharp edged tone. "Don't dare to presume that I have no idea of what is at steak here, and DON'T lecture me on the principals of order or command chain, these are things that I understand all too well, and abide by. Something perhaps neglected in your youth or priestly training. I can read, write, understand and speak several languages, yet that does not make me a priest, nor does it allow me to understand the complexity of the priesthood that you have taken so long to learn. Just as you carry a sword, yet you are no warrior nor do you have any understanding of what it means to be such, the complexities, training and mindset eludes you as is evidenced by your statements and the overtones woven within them."

"And do not presume to question that which has been established from before you were part of this assemblage. You may have made a discovery that is troublesome, but it is something that we have been aware for from the start, and is under control. Those in Monru have connections beyond your understanding, so worry not about you future either, unless you worry about your immediate future," Orun says with a bit of sarcasm mixed into his voice. "If we return from this journey alive, we are to be well rewarded and taken care of."

Dlarumei Ba'ashcha
22 Jul 2004 (22:42)
"Nobles, that will do." Dlarumei's voice is firm and polite. "This does nothing to further our journey nor does it bring accord to our party. So I would appreciate it if you two would keep your comments that do not pertain directly to the quest to yourselves. If you have difficulties with each other then you can work them out later, but for now you will need to curb your opinions of each other and put aside your poor behavior, no matter how you want to couch it within your words, looks or innocent jibes."

She then turns to Shih.

"In response to you questions, Noble Sarku worshiper, I have no intention on pursuing the pedestal if Ssrivan has declined to attempt its procurement. He is driven to take on such tasks with curiosities that I cannot fathom, and does so often at his own peril, he has the scars and marks to prove his tenacity at such things. So, if he were disinclined to take on such a challenge I am certain that only calamitous results would be the answer to those who would attempt traps that he will not. While he will sink in up to his very eyes (she is obviously making a reference to the attic where his encounter with the prize he had unlocked caused him a great deal of pain from which he is only now fully recovered) I have never known him to go in over his head, and I respect his decisions on these matters. So, as far as I am concerned, what ever is still in there will remain in there, I have no intention on attempting to open it. It could be great riches, and it could just as easily be certain death for us all, so I have no plans for it, let it be."

The Livyani Priest's post

22 Jul 2004 (22:55)
The Livyani Priest steps forward into the small, tight circle, and in a whispered voice says.

"Let us not forget that it was a Livyani who murdered that poor servant. His mouth was too smart and I overheard him making poor and outrageous comments about the nobles and especially about Noble Shih. It was my duty to use him as an example to the others that such talk would not be tolerated. It is obviously that it is my misunderstanding of your particular culture that led me to such an action; that combined with my own background of course. So it is logical to make that leap and who was to know the true nature of that man, do we know the true nature of any man?" he looks to Almodhim and then Dlarumei. "Or woman?"

Shih looks from Orun to Dlarumei to the Livyani Priest. Though he doesn't believe it will be that easy, he abides. There's nothing he can do about it anyway.

"I suppose that if he was making unkind remarks about me, then he had to die." :)

"As to the pedestal, I understand your perspective."

Shih walks over to look more closely at the pedestal, careful not to trigger it. He lightly rests his hand atop it as he moves around it. Afterwards, he goes over to talk privately with Jenge.

Allllllllllllllrighty then.

23 Jul 2004 (7:08)
Jenge speaks softly to Shih the pats him gently on the shoulder as he moves towards the group of Dlarumei and Orun. He smiles warmly as they see him approach. Close to a whisper he says to them: "I would not presume to speak of such ilk had it not been foremost in my mind." He makes eye contact will all in the near group one by one. "We must remember our honor and our course. The tones spoken hear may have already reached those of questionable intent around us. Surely they have heard the harsh tones, they may believe we are on to them and will pause their plans. I propose that we "make example" of someone, a nameless porter perhaps, as a diversion to the two. With someone else accused of being a traitor, they may once again resume their behaviors."

"I can only assume what the penalty for a traitor is, perhaps if this person were sent on an secret errand, possibly to return and report our findings to the proper authorities. A status report if you will. This may be viewed favorably by the Empire. We can report to all here, that a traitor has been found and executed."

26 Jul 2004 (12:53)
While several continue to speak and other investigate there is a flash across the night sky and then several gasps and a few screams from the slaves and porters as the horizon appears at one side of the room and begins to grow across the room. First the moon and then Tekumel appear and climb into the sky overhead. This gives the feeling that the room is tilting forward and many lose their balance and fall to the floor.

The image once again begins to travel through the dark space towards the planet below while more and more sit or fall on the floor the room seems to bound headlong towards the surface. It comes down through the sky over the area that some of you recognize as Yan Kor and then heads south quickly passing some tall mountains and then Sarku city before it veers hard right and heads west out over area that few have seen, where it parks over an odd building.

The structure is a round pyramid of sorts that seems to have seen better days, as it is looking rather derelict. There are many missing stones and the peak of the building, which obviously had some ornate capstone, is now smashed apart and the rubble is strewn about the base of the temple. The room then begins to spin over the temple and you watch as the trees and the like pass again and again through your vision until the stars become visible again.

You seem to have returned to where you have started. Many of the slaves and porters seem to be a bit sick and several of the nobles seem to be just a bit green on the edges. The room returns to calm and solidity in its station.

Where is everybody?

26 Jul 2004 (12:58)
Just an FYI after you little trip.

You look about the room and see a pile of slaves and porters huddled together north of the circle of chairs, there are a few guards stationed there as well. Ssrivan is quite a ways away with his scribe and a guard. One of the guards is stationed at the far wall. The main body of Nobles are gathered just south of the circle of chairs and Shih can be seen standing next to the globe in the center of the circle of chairs with that inquisitive and interested look on his face.

Jenge looks wild-eyed at Shih. "There use to be an old proverb about curiosity and a feline of some sort. I shall have to find it in the temple archives and let you read it." Jenge says with a sly smile.

Jenge once again pulls his pad from his pocket and annotates the wondrous pseudo journey they have all just taken.

"It would seem as though a path has been placed in front of us. Shall we be leaving?" Jenge looks to the council of nobles.

Other than that, he has been wandering around listening to conversations and gaining insight as to our future journeys.

"I believe that was the wondrous city of Sarku was it not? A bit south and then west towards the ruins of the temple we witnessed. I would recognize Yan Kor anywhere. Unfortunately, my starting point is a bit askew. I frankly do not know where we are at this very moment."

Jenge flips through his notepad looking for answers he knows aren't readily available, but hopefully some of his random thoughts scribed upon the parchment will trigger a memory.

"Is anybody willing to enlighten us on their thoughts of what we just witnessed?" He asks moving his gaze from one person to the other.

Uchang Khereshu
29 Jul 2004 (10:47)
"Noble Shih," Dlarumei starts in a tone that has neither malice nor praise."I am not sure if we should thank you for our little trip or not. Though I can see no damage or ill effects from our little fore, it is possible that your actions could have caused a less desirable result. I would ask that you please refrain from experimenting on your own and without consultation. We must be prepared for such things, there is more at stake here than you fulfilling your need for discovery."

"To answer your question, that temple that we saw is the temple that the Azure Sphere was held in. As you could see, it is quite old and of an interesting, unordinary, design. Not to mention, in quite some disrepair. I am sure that the locals, a long time ago, saw the temple as a threat. Probably, when they entered it and were most likely seen as a threat and destroyed. I would assume that this prompted the vandalism to its exterior and the destruction to the beacon that was mounted to the very top of the temple. Age certainly has some role to play in the temples appearance and the fact that it has had no care takers for a very long time."

"You have unlocked another part to the puzzle, Shih. And while I truly appreciate that, I am not wild about your methods, but we are all learning how to work together. So in that spirit would you show me what it is that you did to create that last trip?"

Dlarumei takes the fifteen steps over to where Shih is quickly and you can see her speaking to him about the event just passed.

The ride's not over :)

With clear frustration in his voice:
"Already on this journey, we have passed SO many things that may have been important to completing our quest. That said, the map is one such puzzle that was going to be bypassed ... like so much else ... because it was not deemed immediately on our path to the Emerald Sphere. Sometimes, a little prudent experimentation can be a good thing for us all."

"I remain interested in what's under this pedestal. You and Ssrivan are the only ones with the unique blend of skills and knowledge to make this happen. Will you investigate this further please?"

"As a gesture of MY good faith."
Shih now draws the symbol on Dlarumei's face upon the map with the various permutations: Symbol first (from right/left) then arrow (from south/north); or, arrow first (from south/north) then symbol (from left/right).

Traps and Really Bad Things
Ssrivan Tlokhar
30 Jul 2004 (18:34)
OOC: Ssrivan has way too much experience with truly devilish traps to open one on a whim--except when he is in a place he considers more or less safe or when he is under attack and the trap may contain something directly useful to him--and this whimsical behavior is driven by his hunches.

He has seen some really bad traps along this trip--the apparent ease with which he has solved them has absolutely no bearing on how fiendish Kevin has made them. At times he suspects me of having snuck into his house to read his notes (we're on opposite ends of the continent). He has patiently ignored more of them than he has opened along the way. One of the traps he found in Monru nearly killed him--and the results of that trap nearly killed most of the rest of you in the final tubeway station. Those nasty little demon disks were a side effect of the opening of that trap. You thought those demon disks were bad--what was actually in the trap was orders of magnitude worse. This trap is better protected than that one was--and we don't need any additional trap guardians dogging our path and making life miserable at most inopportune times.

Blue Pillar Elevator Express
Jenge Varion
3 Aug 2004 (7:23)
Jenge looks around in discontent. "All this talk about doing something, when we should be doing something!" He grumbles. He delicately hands Almodhim the portrait he drew of her before the world swirled about them. With a wink and a smile he beckons her to follow him towards the blue crystal pillars opposite of the one in which they arrived.

"Churisan, I did not mean to so rudely ignore your question earlier, but the political ramifications of what we are doing swirl about like a whirlpool. You asked how do we leave, and by the elders, I shall show you!" Jenge says alittle louder than he meant to.

He over dramatizes some knuckle cracking and stretching near the blue crystal pillars.

To all: "Perhaps we can mark this place of interest on the map with a big bold circle, to return to once we've had some time to weight and measure what might happen. We are after the sphere are we not? And by the vision we were so graciously shown, it is on the surface, but we are not. Coming?" He questions.
Out of the corners of his mouth he whispers to Almodhim and Churisan, I would like to impress you by letting you think I have some deep insights to all of these wondrous relics, but to tell you the truth, I don't really know how I know some of these things." He pauses for the rested party to gather near the pillars so that he can summon what he thinks will be the ticket out.

Okay...
Dlarumei Ba'ashcha
3 Aug 2004 (15:04)
"Noble Jenge," Dlarumei starts. "How impetuous of you to simply take control of our parties direction, and yet how considerate of you at the same time. You Followers of Thumis always seem to surprise me with you ability to mix various attributes of manners to create a positive solution. Diplomacy is truly a trait not wasted on your kind. Therefore, I must agree with you that we have spent enough time here. It has served a great purpose in finding the Emerald Sphere, and there is much more to learn here, but you are right, now is not the time. I am assuming that you and Shih know how to return to this place? I know his natural curiosity wants to keep him here as I am sure Ssrivan will want to remain longer as well. As for you, I would say that you would also stay longer if you didn't already know that you could bring us back here later. Either way, Shih may have found something useful with the globe and I would like to check with him on that."

She turns to Shih (say that ten times fast) and says, "For openers, it appears that you have found something useful with the globe, is it information that we can benefit from? For this journey or for others as well? And secondly, what lies beneath the pedestal will remain there. I can see it’s complicated and Ssrivan is unwilling to try it with my help then I certainly will not try to open it. I say it again; he does not turn down such challenges unless they are beyond his abilities and beyond our combined abilities. I am sure that it pains him to have to leave this stone unturned, but life is more precious to all of us than what lies beneath this pedestal. If you are still determined to play with it, please do so after we have left for at least one day before you try. Though I would hate to lose you I will honor you tenacity if you so choose."

She glances at Orun.

Jenge Varion
9 Aug 2004 (6:41)
Jange smiles not really hearing Dlarumei. He has grown restless. This room was made to tempt, and Jenge has seen that gleam in Shih's eye before. "If we are to tempt fate, I suggest we be ready for a quick evacuation. No one can impose his or her will upon any other and I do not think my friend will be deterred from his course. To prevent collateral damage to us all, I merely wanted to open up more options. Surely those without the curiosity should not have to pay for it."

Jenge sees the politics washing over the nobles like an ocean's tide. "Finding the sphere is a truly wondrous accomplishment to achieve, I am sure we will find our share of traps and treasures along that path. If Master Ssrivan wishes to leave the trap intact, I for one trust his judgement. As I do all of you, naive as it may seem. We need EVERYONE'S talents."

With one glance at the pillar and back to Dlarumei. "I shall activate the transport when you are ready." Jenge smiles then notices what remarkable weaponry Almodhim and Churisan have. "By the light.... those carvings are wonderful... Did you do them yourselves...or.." Jenge seems distracted by the fantastic crafts before his eyes.

Dlarumei Ba'ashcha
18 Aug 2004 (8:14)
Dlarumei looks around at the party assembled and takes a deep breath before speaking.

"I believe that you are correct noble priest of Thumis, we must remain focused on our primary goal, the Emerald Sphere of Sighs. I can see it in most all of you, the desire to leave this place, and I can understand your wanting to leave such and oddity. But, let me assure you that we have neither broken a covenant nor endangered our clans or temples by being here. Also, let me warn you that few will believe you if you speak of this place. Even some of you who are here find this to be unreal, perhaps a dream or a spell of enchantment; think of how much harder it would be to support your stories to you clan elders. So, if and when you speak of this place, choose your listeners well."

She gathers her things about her quickly and looks to Jenge and Shih.

"One of you should pilot the craft, and it appears that Jenge has made that step for us. Let us then make ready and head to the departure point, that we may continue on."

She then looks to Orun, Neshkriuma and Churisan respectively, in a fashion that would indicate a request to ready the rest of the party. She also quietly says to those around her, "We will deal with our two friends once we are back on solid ground, this is not the time and certainly not the place to have that confrontation."

She then moves towards Jenge and heads towards the exit point.

"These craft all return to this spot, so to answer noble Dlarumei's earlier question, finding similar shuttles will eventually return us back to here. By choosing a destination and maneuvering the craft to that location, we can most assuredly avoid our pursuers, unless they prove to be about as proficient with these ancient teachings as I am. They may very well be piloting another "shuttle" to us this very moment." Jenge continues to lecture to any who's attention he has gained. "I believe we can force our departing shuttle off it's path if the "terminal" we are traveling to has been damaged. I surmise our destination to be Yan Kor, or at least as close to it as I can manage. And once we are there valiant Churisin, I will explain to you how to maneuver the shuttle over a hot cut of meat, and a strong drink. With your indulgence of course." Jenge smiles.

His role of teacher has been long kept on the shelf gathering dust. He had forgotten just how much he missed the dank lecture halls of his temple. He then remembers the harsh words from the temple's faculty admonishing him for his outward thinking and deviation from the "required lessons." With a sigh, Jenge returns to reality and looks about for the female porter he had identified as "gifted." Jenge has become curious about who or what would like to derail this mission.

"Welcome back, Ssrivan. Jenge tells us that we can leave in a manner similar to our arrival, possibly returning to where we left, possibly somewhere else, he doesn't know. Naturally it took him more words than that, I'm over-simplifying. Have you found any other way out of here? Will the portals in the floor take us any closer to our goal?"

"The holes in the floor seem to push fresh air into the room, though the presence of the tiny observers within them also indicate that they may lead somewhere else. The observers are quite shy, and so not likely to be a threat."
Ssrivan's voice strains a bit, becoming a rough rasp for a moment before he clears his throat to continue.

"I have not found any other exits from this place, though many of the power conduits do lead beyond the walls. The sphere seems to be the central control point though, confirming our earlier assumptions about its importance in the room."

Dlarumei Ba'ashcha
4 Sep 2004 (14:12)
Dlarumei continues to move in the direction of the blue crystal pillars, the ones that are the opposite side of the room from where the party entered. You can hear her speak to Jenge as she walks along side of him.

"I know that it is hard to explain that you know how to use this machine of the ancients, and you probably don’t trust yourself in some regards, but you will need to trust yourself. You will know what to do and how to do it, just don't second guess yourself and you will be fine and so will all of us who will be in your care. Ssrivan got us here based on logical choices and the fact that he has an uncanny ability to discern these types of items and the like, and the fact that his decisions are firm, once he makes them, and he does not second guess himself. In this instance, you have one up on him as, in your mind, the key that unlocks this device had been placed and you completely understand it, even if you don't think you do it is there and ready for you call upon it. It is a great gift that you have received; it gives you abilities that no others have save for Shih and myself. But it is also a curse in the same token for the knowledge is not comprehensible to you or other, but it is still there nonetheless and soon you will stop trying to explain it and move on. You are a smart man Jenge, and the gift has not been wasted on you, nor on Shih, but living with such graces will prove to be challenging later on and we will have to see if it will affect your spell casting once we are back on the ground."
She gives him a smile and points to the pillars as she continues to walk forward to the destination.

Orun, who was listening carefully to the words of Ssrivan, as he always does, looks around behind the party as he ushers the slaves and porters to the crystal pillars. Friendly seeming or not, he will keep a close eye out for any movement that is not party affiliated. He pulls out a bolt from its resting place and starts twirling it between the fingers of his left hand as his right hand loosens the knot holding the heavy crossbow hanging off his right hip. He does not draw the weapon but he has readied it as much as possible without actually picking it up and loading it.

Magical mystery tour
Shih Nacunya
7 Sep 2004 (14:51)
On the map, Shih draws the various permutations of the symbol on Dlarumei's face: Symbol first (from right/left) then arrow (from south/north); or, arrow first (from south/north) then symbol (from left/right). This produces a dizzying view of the temple where the Azure Sphere was located, a dizzying rendition of the path to the Emerald Sphere, a dot on the map (i.e., we're missing the symbol) where the Crimson Sphere is located, and the glowing location of key cities/landmarks of the ancients in their writing. After these are depicted, Shih turns to the group, some of whom now have motion sickness.
"We've now gleaned what I believe can be safely determined from the map. There's more here, but without Ssrivan and Dlarumei to lead that effort, this mystery cannot be safely unraveled further."

"The Ancients have requested that one of us stays to ascend to their realm of thought. Whoever is chosen cannot be ordered to do so and must bear us no ill will. It's very likely that that individual will trade their current life for considerable knowledge and power. So, any volunteers?"

"Ssrivan, the next time you discover the presence of mysterious watchers, have the courtesy to alert your guardians they may be shy out of weakness, or simply patience. How do you know which?"

"Shih, if you afflict us with any more of those stomach-churning visions without warning us first, you will have endangered us carelessly, and I will consider it a matter of honor between us. I have no desire to remain here."

"Jenge, summon this magical transport and get us out of here!"

Posting for Ssrivan

8 Sep 2004 (21:24)
This is the GM posting for Ssrivan who is out for a bit running around the world.

"Noble Churisan," Ssrivan starts in a calm tone. "That is exactly what it is that I am doing at this moment. I was on the outer edge with the guards that you so graciously sent to assist me and we have only just a few moments ago made the discovery of what you are all now preparing for. I felt that if I were to rush my arrival any sooner, those who lurk and watch would become suspicious that we were aware of them, but I can see that you have already taken care of that." He says with a rye tone in his voice. "It is best that we do as you suggest Noble follower of Karakan and get out of here."

"What I suspect you're seeing is Ancients who have been awoken. After all, we're the first interesting thing that's happened here in quite some time."
Concentrating on what I learned within, I try to mentally send the image of a formal bow such as I had seen Dlarumei execute. I follow this with what I hope is the appropriate greeting in the appropriate language:

"Ancient Sleepers, those that you anticipated so long ago are here. I offer you our humble greetings on behalf of Noble Raumeil!"

OOC: If this works, you'll hear Shih uttering gibberish.

Jenge starts to move towards the control booth when all the attention draws to the hide holes Ssrivan has pointed out. He makes the transport ready, should these creatures turn out to be of the homicidal nature, a fast egress may be in order. Jenge lavishes over the craftsmanship in the control booth. He lets instinct take over and annotates his actions in his journal as he readies to do them.

Jenge watches from his position as the transport get loaded. His mind gets slightly distracted as he thinks of Almodhim, Dlarumei, and the female porter noted as a spy. Why his thoughts play with carnal fantasies, he finds them harder and harder to push from his thoughts. Is it this place breaking his conditioning, or the women themselves? He ponders.

Standing next to Churisan, waiting for some response from the watchers, Shih mumbles, thinking out loud to himself as much as communicating to those near him.

"Servants of the ancients can appear to be anything. Given the ability to self-direct and think, unless they were somehow kept from developing, support things here could have developed into vast cultures. There's many times more surface area here than on Tekumel. How many might live here?! As the Gods pass through here, they would know not to attack. This place would certainly be watched with curiousity and fear. These cultures could have had wars, formed empires ... anything. They would have access to amazing technologies and vast reservoirs of extraplaner energy. The differences might be vast! Something here must prevent them from leaving this place or affecting Tekumel directly. If they're just servants, they're more afraid of us than we are of them."

The others watch as Jenge arrives at the largest of the blue pillars and touches it in several places. With each touch a small musical tone emits and a soft blue light pulses to match the tone. Within a few moments the floor turns to liquid under his feet, or so it seems, and he begins to slowly descend through the shinny onyx stone. Ssrivan looks on with the understanding of having done this before as Jenge, somewhat hesitant at first, is swallowed up by the darkness of the floor.

Once his head has submerged below the floor level the surface seems to solidify again and soon the other four crystals begin to glow. They pulse and seem to hum in a low, and inviting tone, as the floor within their rectangular outline seems to wave as water on the shore of a lake. From its black watery mass immerges many seats all in rows of eight, twelve rows to be exact, and all facing what, is presumable, forward. In a few moments the floor that the seats are attached to rises up above the floors surface and there is a clanking tone as all motion is arrested. The blue crystals hold a steady blue tone the is just a bit brighter as before to help you see the seats more clearly.

It is at this moment that many of you notice Hrissu seating himself in one of the chairs at the center of the room. He lies back humming a tune that none of you can recognize and draws a pattern on the control pad attached to his chair. In an instant his body sinks into the chair in total relaxation and the stars in the night sky of the ceiling flicker and fade from view as a sunrise begins on the opposite side of the room from the departure point.

Shih stands like a stone, concentrating on something, trying to send his thoughts forward to creatures unknown. Churisan, standing close to Shih, listens to words in a tongue long lost from the lands of Tekumel. He is also the first to notice Shih's face turn from an expression of inquisition to one of pain. Shih grasps his head for a moment before he thrusts his arms straight out from his shoulder in a cross-like position. He makes no sound other that that of his teeth grinding before he tips over backward and falls, flat on his back, on the dark, cold onyx floor. His striking the floor seems to free him from his rigidity and he curls up into a ball with his hands on his head, pressing his palms forcible over his ears.

Orun makes a quick signal and four porters run to Shih and begin to cart him toward the departure sight. Shih protests saying through clinched teeth, "I will stay...,I have things to learn..." He lets out a yowl of pain and tightens his grip on his head. Orun signals the porter to take him to the transport. Once again Shih lets out a yell, "LEAVE ME!!!" his body jerking free of the porters grip and he tries to move away from them, slithering like a worm on the floor. The porters watch as he rolls over onto his back and straightens out in stiff pain, his back arching off the black darkness of the stone. He remains like that for several moments until his face turn from grimace to surprise and he utters the word "Hrissu?" in a soft aspiration before his eyes roll back into his head and he passes from conscientiousness. Orun once again signals for the porters to move him to the transport, and this time they are successful, setting him upright in a seat with a porter on each side for support and Dlarumei behind him cradling his head tenderly in her hands and muttering odd words.

As the sunrise ascends into the sky of the dome you can notice that the floor on the far side of the room seems to be moving. Moving in a wave-like flow and heading towards the center area where Hrissu is seated.

Ssrivan shakes his head as he walks towards the transport uttering words of which only "...learn that one cannot stare into the eyes of gods or seek their wisdom directly..." are heard by anyone. The rest seem to be muttered reminders to himself and odd calculations.

He does not know what has transpired on the above deck, nor does he wish to know why Shih wanted someone to stay behind to give their life for unknown knowledge. He's just happy to be clear of that place. It's lurkers and deadly traps. Secrets best left for those more adept in the Ancients. He will steer, as well as he can, hoping the controls come to him in the same vision he has had up until now.

19 Sep 2004 (18:54)
As the party seats themselves, the sound of a thousand small wriggling objects begins to fill the air. The sun on the dome is still rising lending a better view at the snake like objects that slither across the onyx darkness towards the center island of chairs. Their shinny metallic bodies sparkle like the waters of the ocean as the sun reflects off of them as it rises. Then you feel it, the floor beneath your feet moved, and you take a sharp breath, as you know you are about to vanish beneath the darkness.

You watch as you feet slip beneath the black liquid that was a solid floor just moments earlier. There is some trepidation, of course, but everyone stays calm as the party submerges into the floor. Up past your knees now and you can feel that it is warmer below the surface than in the domed room. For some that is comforting and for others worrisome, but it is a fact, nonetheless, and one that cannot be avoided. Only once the liquid reaches the chests of the party does anyone remember Hrissu, and just as the liquid begins to envelop your neck and then your head do you turn to see him being picked over by the metal snakes, his clothing gone and his body being preened gently and carefully. He seems to be in a comfortable slumber, breathing slowly and dreaming of something wonderful. Other snakes have gone about the room devouring any objects left behind, crumbs of food, pieces of cloth, anything left is vanquished and cleaned, even the spots where only fingers have touched are gone over by these small metallic serpents.

Then you hold your breath and close your eyes as the liquid envelops your face and glides over the top of your head. Like someone passing a feather over your face, you feel the liquid rise up over your head and with some hesitance you peer out the tiniest of slots your eyelids will allow after the feeling has passed, until you finally open your eyes to see the inside of transport.
You begin breathing again as your seat settles on the floor of the transport. The walls here are much different than in the transport that brought you to the dome. Here, they are an off white with golden trim lines that slice around the room in many different directions. Small strands of blue light blink around the walls and there are window-like boxes pressed into the wall with a substance covering them through which you can see.

Your attention is drawn quickly to the ceiling as you hear a crackling noise and see that the liquid is becoming solid from it outer edge towards its center. Then, just before the last bit of ceiling solidifies, you see a glow emanating from under Shih's robes and then the object that he had removed from under the globe rises up and tears through the priestly fabric and rockets up and through the last bit of liquid ceiling before is closes up. Shih’s eyes open briefly and then he slumps back into his unconscious state.

Within a few moments you see Jenge's very large head appear on the front wall of the compartment, within a rectangular frame set into that wall. His voice is calm as he looks directly at all of you and tells you that things will soon be ready for departure. You hear a low pitch tone that starts to climb in its structure until it reaches a humming pitch where it levels out. There is a flicker of light on the walls of the transport and after another flash you can see through the window-like frames on the wall into the underside of the dome's floor. There you can see walkways and power lines. Blue-green lights illuminate suspended pathways that hang over a vastness that is unlike any you have seen before. Farther than your eyes can see does the structure travel away from the left side of the transport, to your right, not far away is the outer wall of the structure you suppose. Those sitting next to the windows can look down and report that it is deeper than the fall from the cliff at the hallway you had been in before coming to the dome.

There are objects floating about in the airspaces, some large and some small with arms and tentacles, all working at some task or carrying items about. None seem to notice or care that you are there, they have jobs that need to be done and they are busy completing various assignments. It is hard to say if they are creatures or Ru’un, but either way you are secure inside the transport. Off in the distance, you can see several pairs of humanoid figures walking on the various catwalks some in robes and others in tight fitting outfits that cover arms and legs but allow one to see their length clearly.

Then the transport moves slightly, but it is enough for you to refocus your attentions to the large head of Jenge as he tells you again to prepare for departure. You can see, out the window, that your transport is one of many in a line as you drop away from docking area. You float downward for a few meters and then turn to face the wall of the structure housing all that you have just seen. A light flashes on the wall and a small aperture opens before you and the transport slowly moves through it, out into the darkness of the heavens. You can feel the bottom of the craft sink, and it makes you uneasy as you drift away from the moon you were just inside. The small opening closes and then, without any sense of motion, you jet away, heading towards the larger moon of Tekumel.

From this point the trip is very similar to the one you took while in the dome, around the moon, down over the island, across the water, up over the land, atop the mountain and then down to the valley below. Only this time you don't land in an open field between two large stones. The transport takes you, in the dark of night, before a hill that opens its side and allows you to fly inside the structure under its protection.

As you travel into the hillside lights flicker on and ancient stones move to create a landing platform. The transport touches down and the hillside closes behind you. Jenge's head tells you that you will be able to exit soon, just be patient while the systems come online. These words mean little to you, but you trust that he has things under control.

In a few minutes the right side of the transport hisses and splits in its center. A pair of doors opens out into the station before you. A rush of warm, moist air hits you in the face and it is a welcome feeling, a sign that you are home. At least home in the sense that you are on the ground again. The smell of old dirt and the stale air of the underground fill your nostrils as the lights of the station come to life. Before you is a stone platform with a few benches and not much else. There seems to be no one or nothing else before you as you gaze out of the side of the transport.

The room is warm and humid, just the way you like it. It is dark and sullen, forgotten for a thousand lifetimes. Sound travels only in short distances and is muffled here, a unique quality for such a cavern appearance. Churisan and Orun work the guard up through platform securing the area for the rest of the party as a shadowy figure scurries up the side of the platform, ducking in and out of the pillars and other stone outcroppings. Orun sends a look of knowing to Churisan who looks concerned about this unseen traveling companion and the group continues.

The scouting party is out about sixty meters when a blood curdling scream echoes through the chamber. They turn back towards the transport, where the sound emanated, to see Shih sitting up, his head still being held by Dlarumei, and breathing hard he is struggling to pull himself back together. The sound of his voice still lingers and echoes out into the chamber for quite some time. Nothing seems to happen as a result of this loud interruption.

Shih gulps air, scrunching up his face and glaring about as his mind bounces from some stark internal visions to that of the sights within the foyer. Getting his bearings, he stands effortlessly and examines himself noting with a heavy sigh his torn robe and empty pocket. Anyone nearby hears him say to himself, "So, not a dream!"

Realizing that it was Dlarumei that cradled his head, he looks at her critically, squinting his eyes and tilting his head to the left. After a pregnant moment, he says to her, "What was that that you did?"

The mind is a fragile place, as you well know, and yours had been assaulted. It was done in innocence and ignorance, yet there was much damage and there would have been further damage as well. I assisted you in minimizing your losses and in helping you to remain strong and in your right mind, nothing more, nothing less. That which you chased after in you mind was me, the beast was the other part of you, the new part of you which you must always keep in check. It offers many advantages for you but it will take over if you let it or become too weak to keep it where it belongs. You also seem curious enough to seek it out and invite it to join with you. That is the reason why I had to rip you out of its grasp. Please understand that while it supports you and feeds you and makes you what you are or what you have become and what you will become, IT IS insanity if it is allowed to have control, and it will not relinquish its control once it has obtained it. For this reason and the fact that your mind is still tender from your last experience, I will be with you as you sleep, and help you if you need it for the next few nights till your mind is healed and whole again." She then looks out the door of the transport and turns back to Shih. "I think that we should go and offer our support."

The Beast Within

3 Oct 2004 (21:05)
Shih looks at Dlarumei expressionlessly. Was it she that infected him with this "Beast"? It was certainly not evident earlier when he arose from the couch. Now, it's like a ravening creature within, separate from his own consciousness but riding him like a tethered Zrne on the back of a great chlen, neither happy with the arrangements. And why would she do this? Off hand, he could think of a myriad of reasons, none good. As an alternative, those that changed him could have planted the seeds for The Beast and it's only now grown into a problem. In that case, Dlarumei is his savior. He will watch carefully to see if Dlarumei cradles Jenge's head. "Noble Jenge, how are YOU feeling? Do you hear The Beast as well?"

Turning, Shih addresses the warriors in a spry voice, "So, are we dead yet?"

"I was curious as to whether they are controlled by magic, or possible alive with it." He examines the stones that moved to accommodate the craft's landing. "Thumis is the eye, the ever seeing. Through his wisdom I shall find the strength to survive." He finds himself speaking.

Until now, Jenge believed the "inner beast" was a story developed by criminals wishing to divert blame from themselves. Can one succumb to such a thing? Jenge finds the meeting of this "beast" exciting. What wondrous things to be learned. Jenge silently thanks Shih for his input. Jenge shall prepare himself for his dream visitor. Platform Stones

Here we are.
Uchang Khereshu
5 Oct 2004 (21:36)
Ssrivan and several others will examine the interesting effects that Urutlen speaks of and they head over to the area that he indicates.
The platform is comprised of large, two meter by two meter stones, some smaller, and it is at least 100 meters square. The transport rests on one end and the other end of the platform heads over to an area that seems to hold a waiting room of sorts. A smaller chamber pressed into the side of the wall that is the inside of the hill you entered. All the sides, save for that one, seem to be suspended in air, with quite a drop off into darkness. The chamber that the transport is resting in is rather large and all that is beyond the landed transport is dark and difficult to see into. You can, however, make out that there is a pathway beyond the transport and farther out and away from the platform. It seems to be more like a cave entrance with rough stones and little in the way of refinements. The platform, on the other hand, seems to be quite the opposite. Each stone, though dusty, has a symbol etched upon its face that seems to represent the sun, and it is as Urutlen had proclaimed, that as you step towards the very edge of the platform, which seems to drop off into a deep chasm, several smaller stones seem to rise up to meet your feet. Ssrivan obviously tests this experience and walks out from the platform at least twenty meters. Each step is met with a stone, and as he returns the stones seem to disappear so that when he has returned to the platform, there is no sign that the other stones ever were present.

Churisan has had several torches lit, as the room is still fairly dark, even with the provided lights. This seems to help the mood a bit as well as ones ability to see more clearly. Interestingly enough this also brings to light several pillars that skirt the edges of the platform. They hold nothing up, in fact they are only ten meters high, or thereabouts, but there are four on each side, made of the same stone that the platform is comprised of. Each pillar seems to have a representation of the sun in a different phase or with a differing variety of celestial bodies.

Shih casts his most powerful POE. He anticipates, given the way that the other areas have powered everything, that this is going to be quite strong. Looking over at Orun, he notes that the warrior is not characteristically barking orders and is intently looking at something. While looking about the chamber but before walking around, Shih sidles over to him and asks, "What's wrong?"

(An answer to a question that Churisan has about the pillars.)

I think that by phase, I was trying to establish that one pillar would have a rising sun, and another would have a setting sun. One at full day with strong lines representing the radiant aspects as powerful and one with the lines being diminished to represent a weaker sun perhaps something representing our winter sun with its power to heat reduced. And there are some that have other markings that one could surmise would be other celestial bodies. Especially after the room that you were just in, you would recognize some of the shapes that are represented in the carvings. Not that you would understand their significance or be able to name them, but recognize them you would.

Churisan has the guards spread out, still watching in all directions (including up towards the shadowy roof somewhere above). He takes one swordsman with him to look in to the "waiting room," to see if there is any way out from there.

Churisan returns from the edge of the platform to the main group. "There are dusty windows there, and a large door that seems to connect to the outside."

Churisan joins Urutlen, and asks him to point out where he saw stones moving below. He moves to the edge of the platform and looks.
[ooc: hello? hello? Anybody there? Some of our players haven't posted for months. Are they gone for good?]

Playing with the stones
Ssrivan Tlokhar
15 Oct 2004 (18:31)
After a while of testing the possibilities with the magical stones, Ssrivan will work his way over to Churisan and Urutlen. Does his vantagepoint while out away from the platform help him pick out whatever it is they are getting excited about? He will be on the main platform as he reaches them, however, not on the disappearing stones.

Jenge says to the group as he examines the stones. "The stones have wondrous properties. They are not sentient though. Something here is sensing our movements and causing the stones to react. It could possibly be the stones themselves. I tried to determine which type of stone they are... but I cannot narrow it down just yet." His mind races through private files stored in his memory. Marble? Granite? perhaps Obsidian... Jenge attempts to classify the stone and remember is they are affected my magnetism, magic, electrical energies (such as other artifacts he has seen).

To the warriors, Jenge asks, "If we know we are not alone, why do we not just invite our observer to a parlay?"

To Jenge, Shih, et. al.:"Should we discover the source of all this moving about? Or merely use the conveniently-provided transport to get to a safer location?"

"Nesh, the sophistication of the mechanisms that the ancients took so for granted are well beyond us. Each stone understands its place in the grander scheme and can direct itself. For all I know, they have other offensive and defensive purposes. Unfortunately, we must settle for simply using them. I suspect that this is but the tip of a much larger structure. Like the place we just came from, it merits a look." In his voice, you can hear the vast frustration of finding himself ... HERE.

Shih considers that which has evidently followed or been assigned to follow them.

Dlarumei looks to Shih and says, "Colleague, the shadow that you have seen did come down with us on our journey, but he was an invited guest and remains so in our midst. Urutlen was skirting the party in an attempt to secure any problems before they occurred. That is the smoke and shadow that you saw."

When one looks over the edge of the stone platform that has been created for you and your craft, one notices that it is quite a long drop. There are lights below, but they are weak and spaces far apart. The sound of moving stone can be heard from below and occasionally one can see stones creating a path over nothingness and then falling away again. Sporadically and without pattern this happens, over and over again, with the occasional figure traversing the stone bridge that appears. It is a goodly ways down and so no one is able to make out what kind or being or creatures are making these crossings or to what end they are being made. It is hard to tell if there are levels to this massive stone or if you are hanging out on a ledge or just exactly what is down below, but stones move and you have all experimented with that.

As to the stone pillars with the carved tops, the solar representations on the pillar tops work in a sequence ranging from the early morning sky that you saw rise several times in the dome, through midday and back to evening dusk. There are two other representations that would remind you of the night sky filled with stars, and though the sun is still represented (though be it in a much more muted fashion) there is some allowance for artistic license in your mind. You also recalled that as you were boarding the transport, the solar sequence was, once again, playing on the dome.

The windows at the end of the platform that are looking out from the waiting area that Churisan explored earlier are covered with dust. That end of the room is sort of in a hemisphere and so the windows are arching from top to bottom out and away. The dust seems to be on the outside of the windows. The door is large and looks to not have been opened for quite some time.

All is very quiet in the room save for your conversations moving about and the sounds of moving stones from below.

"Thank you noble Dlarumei for your answer and the mental healing. Is this invited companion one of those with whom I tried to communicate? Has it a name?"

"Thinking out loud ... the stones may very well operate in more than two dimensions. I suspect that something as simple as pointing will take you deeper or upwards. To be clear to the device, it might require that both hands make the same gesture."
