Re: This Subject Line For Rent Or Lease

A lot of beauty is related to three things....

1. Health: A male wants a young woman who can give him many children.  Shiny hair, straight teeth, wide hips....

2. Secondary sexual characteristics: Men have wide jaws.  Women who are prettier do not.  Vive la difference.  Things that mark you clearly as one or the other raise attractiveness.

3. Good character and good attitude:  While there are a great number of young beauties with terrible attitudes, over time this matters more.  Even still, a young beauty with a smile, and a sweet manner is more attractive than the same one with a sneer at someone she thinks is beneath her.

Over time, this matters a lot.  YOu start to look like what you are.

"Flo" in the Progressive commercials was originally more attractive.  I read her recently described as 'oddly attractive' which is correct.  Given the basic facts of her, she's nothing special.  But unlikel a lot of actresses on TV, she was sweet and friendly.

The producers have changed her charact3er a bit making her less sweet....which makes her less attractive.

Re: This Subject Line For Rent Or Lease

As much as I find these stories to be fun and distracting, I need to distance myself from RPOL for awhile soon. Could we arrange a stopping point in the next little while? I'd love to have something to come back to, without leaving a plotline unfinished.

Scord, we can stop the game any time. Just stop replying to it. What do you need me to do to accommodate that for you?

John, I think our game is in a good place to pause since I'm in the hubworld. I'll take your advise.

Hey Carl, regarding the aphorism "Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder." I think I can prove it to you.

Imagine for a moment that a magazine is holding a survey for who should be voted Sexiest Man Alive. Your choices are George Clooney or Danny DeVito. Who are you voting for?

Does that make sense?

In reply to JohnA1nut (msg # 966):

Not really. Imagine that the people asked to vote are a New Guinea yam farmer, a Baka tribeswoman from central Africa, a Taos Pueblo medicine man, a blind Ukrainian man, an Irish lass at a ceili, a Tuvan shaman, and a very prudish Brazilian nun.

In Reply to Carl:

Fair enough. Fair enough. I will concede to you on this point. When you said "People from different cultures" I was thinking "They were all Americans. How many more different cultures are there?" You get me?

I did not take into account the great variety of cultures which exist.

However, do you at least see the point I was making about how it isn't always the case?

Not being fully "human" myself, I would suspect that "always" is a very rare thing to actually encounter when society and psychology are involved on a broad scale.

Okay Carl. Here's one for you. I saw a study in which the participants giving their opinions on beauty were the single most objective viewer in existence. They were babies under one year of age.

When shown photographs or people who were considered "prettier" by the mainstream, the babies held their attention onto that person for a notably longer time.

I'm not trying to change your personal viewpoints. I'm simply enjoying a friendly discussion.

Neuroplasticity. To some degree the recognition of beauty is genetically determined, but as with all things mental, the brain can be trained to consider other traits to be beautiful which might not naturally be so. Additionally, given that human origins include an array of other species, genetically determined aesthetic is likely to have a similar variety.

Re: This Subject Line For Rent Or Lease

Hey Carl. By now, I would hope you've noticed that Anything is Possible in the multiverse. You can meet people out of order, you can go places and see things that are beyond imagination.

What I was trying to do with your game was something new to me and probably to a lot of other Multiverser referees. At least, I've never heard of it being done. I was running it to say that Carly Rae had versed out and had been living there for a few months. She doesn't know any more about versing than you did. Back home, she had a beloved Uncle Carl whom she cared for deeply and would do anything she could to help and protect. And she thought you were him. That's where I was trying to take your story.

I see that didn't work so well. At least we learned from it, right? I believe nothing is a total loss if you learned from it.

Would you like to try again to play together?

I'd be interested in trying. Let me know!!!!

In reply to JohnA1nut (msg # 976):

Perhaps an RPG-mechanics verse? A world in which reality operates along the rules of a specific roleplaying game, and the inhabitants are aware of these rules in-universe. People have character sheets as legal documents or identification. Someone might be defined a monster, an NPC, or a PC. Teenagers undergo some form of ceremony or test at the temple to determine what "race" they are as a character (which may result in hilarious mismatches)...

...and the local religion is completely wrong about what game mechanics actually are in operation in their reality. They think it is one gaming system when it is really a different one underlying everything.

Re: This Subject Line For Rent Or Lease

That sounds like a few of the episodes of Twilight Zone 1986. (If you're not familiar, look it up on YouTube.) It also sounds beyond my capability.

Would you like to try Paintball World again? It's my standard world for starting players. I think I'll introduce you to Super Samantha this time. Instead of Carly Rae. Players don't seem to like Carly Rae as much...... Heck, Eric hated Carly Rae so much, he demanded that I never again bring her into the world.

If you're reading my game with Eric, Super Samantha is one level up from the girl that he's with.

Thoughts?

I've been reading everyone's posts, to a degree. Paintball World would get me asking all kinds of philosophical and existential questions again, which seemed to bother you from my impressions.

Well, were you asking that because of who you met or because of the world in general? I think it was probably because of who you met.

One thing for sure, you're never gonna meet Magehammer.....

Let me run the world the way I usually do.

If you're interested, you tell Oak to start thread:

Carl In Paintball World, Take Two.

But you have to ask him that.

Are you sure you want to do this, John?

*ponders how chickens are slaughtered in a world without violence, what kind of scalpels surgeons use there, and how the paintball folks defend themselves from dangerous animals*

Not really. But what the hey?

quote:
*ponders how chickens are slaughtered in a world without violence,

Addendum:

*Ponders how chickens are slaughtered in a world without violence Towards Other Humans. Animals are still domesticated. And since when do you need a gun to hunt?

And if that doesn't work for you, then everyone is vegetarian. Take your pick.

quote:
what kind of scalpels surgeons use there,

Same kind as our world. People still get hurt. Accidents still happen. Diseases are still a thing.

quote:
and how the paintball folks defend themselves from dangerous animals*

With a paintball gun. (Have you ever been shot with one? It would deter most animals.)

I've considered a great many of these questions.

Ask Oak to start the thread. Worst case scenario, we'll once again find out we're not compatible.

Yes, I've been shot by one at random on the street. It cut my skin in a ring shape.

And I've seen how humans deny the humanity of their fellow man at times, so the "Ape Shall Not Kill Ape" principle won't necessarily apply. Recall the Missouri Massacre, when one Christian sect was declared "vermin" by the authorities and could be freely hunted down.

No thank you, John. Your idea of a starting world isn't at all right for this semi-supernatural critter. Much as your own game proved to be vastly different than what I had thought you meant by "super" characters, and I departed with no desire to return to what came across as a Mary Suetopia.
