Old Jalanthar

As the group starts to settle down and eat some of the fish Milo caught, other boats start to pull up onto the shore. A large barge along with two smaller vessels pulls up and ties off for the night. Many of their crew set to the shore for a small cook out.

The night goes on without incident. The cookout on shore turned out fairly good. They invited all the boat’s crews along, many didn’t go, but it was a nice offer.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

19th of Fading Midday

On the morning of the third day a small village comes into view downriver. As you get closer you notice that the buildings are all abandoned and destroyed, what is left is but a pile of sod and rubble. A wooden keep that once stood near the center is now collapsed in upon it self, the timbers now dry and gray from weather and sun.

Charlie points to the ruins. ”Thast old Jalanthar. You’ll have ta hike in to Jalanthar proper. Its North near the foothills. Not too far though.

We’ll be get’n there right about midday.”

The sun is high when you round a bend in the river and approach what looks to be a river dock on the north side of the river. Two boats sit in the dock, a group of men along with a dozen or so donkeys stand close by the dock, they look to be shoot’n the bull. Attached to the dock is a large but squat fortress like building that has been covered up on three sides by earth and grass. Only the river side is exposed.

The area around is beautiful. Grass covered knolls cut through by the crystal clear river, roll into, tall majestic mountains, their peaks covered in snow. Soaring pine trees litter the area and get thicker as they get closer to the mountains. Small groves of aspens poke their way through the thick pines, their leaves turning a bright orange from the seasons. Clear blue skies with white puffy clouds forming near the mountains.

Charlie smiles a full tooth grin. ”Here's the spot. And a might faster than we thought. We made good time.

When you get into Jalanthar, check out the Crowing Cockatrice, but I don’t need ta tell ya that. It’s the only darned thing in Jalanthar.
He laughs.

”Have fun”

Getting off the boat you see a well worn trail the heads North into the mountains.

Re: Old Jalanthar

Erdthar ignored the blue and the green and the puffy white clouds.  All he knew was that the sun hurt his eyes.  Turning his squinty gaze to the boatman, he asked in gravely tones.  "Lemme get this straight.  If wed'a given you 250 gold, youd'a run them rapids at night?  And you don't see in the dark?"  At comfirmation of this, he grined widely, and gave the fellow a stunning slap in the middle of his back.  "You're alright!"  He told the man, then moved off up the trail, axe spinning to the side.

Renoart followed the orc without too much comment. A passing farewell to the boatdriver Charlie, a check over his equipment. The fish never sat too well with him after supping, and he was in a cranky mood most of the trip.

"I wouldn't have minded a longer stay in Sundabar friends, now we're back out in the wilds seemingly, the Cockatrice did he say? Sleepy watchmen and blindness plague me forever more, sakes, what I'd give for a dwarves granite pillow, than a Cockatrice inn of any kind in these lonely parts."

With his backpack on his back and a staff in his hand, taps on the keg standing next to him.

"Oi, Erd. Wait a minute. Could I convince you to carry this thing? While I did have the brain to think about bringing beer, I'm a bit lacking in the department of brawn to carry it."

Erd stops in his tracks, turns around and squats next to the keg.  Setting down his axe, he gives a lurch, and stands, then with another lurch, balances the 50 gallon keg on his shoulder.  "Gimme my axe, would ya?"  He asks, holding out his now free hand.

Crowing Cockatrice

After little more than a two mile walk you enter the town proper.

At first glance it is easy to see that the Jalanthar residents have given up on above ground buildings. Most of the buildings seen are half buried in the ground, forming small grass and shrub covered knolls. Partially burying the buildings makes them much more defensible than if they had been completely above ground.

Building Knolls sprout up from the ground in various spots, none of them very close together. Small walking paths crisscross here and there, heading from one knoll to the next. The people seen and passed by are more than welcoming. Everyone you have passed has looked up from their work with a smile and some form of greeting.

After walking through the building knolls for a few moments, you notice a building that is completely above ground and surrounded by more knolls, off in the distance. It is at least two corn fields (football fields) away. The building is a low-walled stone keep; it is oval in shape and has an odd looking metal roof upon it.

As you draw closer to the largest building in town you see the sign out side the door that reads “Crowing Cockatrice”. The roof appears to be a ramshackle of old equipment. You see old rusted tower shields, long swords, axes and even a few daggers that have all been molded together to form a metal roof, the longer you look at the roof, the more interesting objects you can pick out.

Being midday the tavern looks fairly dead.

"With the exception of the nasty inn I'd almost be sworn this was a pleasent halfling village. Shall we to the inn first, as Charlie suggested or straight on across the corn fields to the fortress? Not that it looks like much, the engineers of my faith could bolster this simple keeps defenses, too bad none are here. Oh,...I mean, besides me,...", he flashes a sheepish grin.

Re: Crowing Cockatrice

Entering the Crowing Cockatrice the light is low and dim. The candles in the candelabras that hang over head put off just enough light to see, long shadows form all over the open inn. Looking across the inn you see that there are about 6 tables, each one has room to seat 4 to 6 people. Currently there is only one patron along with the bar keep in the tavern. A tall human man stands behind the bar he raises his hand and speaks. ”Howdy folks. What can I do for ya?”

The floor boards creek under your feet as you shift your wait from foot to foot.

The other person in the bar sets near the back of the bar at a table all by himself. He keeps his back to the wall as he reads over a few pieces of parchment by the candle light. His cloths are un-kept and look to have been patched over in many places. He pays no attention to any of you as you enter the tavern; he just sits and reads through his parchments.

Re: Crowing Cockatrice

Zornun calls you over to his table. ”Well you must be the lads that Dundbar sent. You look like an able crew.” He scatters through a few of his papers takes a sip of his wine and then looks back up to the group of you.

”About two ten day ago there was an earth shake high in the Nether mountains. The shake caused a few landslides in and around the area. One of these landslides uncovered an ancient dwarven stronghold, located high on the steep slopes. We do not know much of the stronghold, all we know is that a famous dwarven warrior known as Brattor resided there for many years. We also believe there to be powerful magic’s located there as well.

Now, I must tell you, two groups of men have already entered the ancient fortress. One group entered the day after the uncovering. The other group went in just last week. They went in looking for the first group, so far neither has returned.”
Zornun bows his head for a moment.

”I have arranged a good amount of supplies for you. Is there anything that you need? So far I have a lot of climbing gear for you. The slopes will be steep and treacherous you will need good gear. It will also get very cold on the mountainside; you had best bring some cold weather gear. Get me a list together and I will collect your things.

When do you want to head out?”

OoC: If you guys want any supplies, Zornun is willing to give 1000gp worth of equipment to the cause. Get me a list of stuff that you want. You can list it in the OoC thread.

Zornun fumbles through some papers on the table. ”I’ll have your supplies ready first light then.

Ohh, I almost forgot. Here, I sketched this out, it should prove accurate. It is sketched exactly how the Lead scout reported it.”
He hands over a large piece of parchment that has a well drawn out map upon it.

”I have traced out the route that the scouts recommend, follow it if you wish. If you find yourselves lost up there in those hills. Look for the large peak, Snowmass peak, in the distance, it is nearly true north.

I’ll be going now, see you at dawn.”

Zornun bows his head as he starts to pack up his belongings, he packs them into a large cotton sack.

"Thank you for your generous supplies, Zornun, we shall make good use of them.", says Renoart, and collects his gear placing it inside his pack.

"I won't be getting drunk, but I may stop by that small stockade over yonder.", he addresses this mostly to Zornun before he steps out, "Would they need a watch stander tonight. I'd like to look out at the stars tonight. Its so clear out in the wilderlands. Not like the cities."
