Re: Trails to Felbarr (Adventure Thread)

A massive bolt of lightning shoots across the sky followed by a tremendous thunderclap at the mention of Auril, the Frost Maidens name. The wind and rain continue to fall heavily upon the trail as the caravan bumps and grinds along. After a few hours of travel through the forbidding terrain and stormy weather the group makes it to the top of the valley ridge. Looking back across the valley you see bits of the rock-strewn trail poking out here and there, further back in the distance you see the large rock face that holds the dwarven mines.

From atop the valley ridge you look beyond, to the west the view is fairly decent, even with the gloomy weather. Valley upon rock strewn valley head west with out a clearing in sight. The terrain ahead looks as treacherous as the terrain behind with the trail winding down through more rock-infested fields.

With all the mention of ale you catch more than one dwarf licking their chops as you plod along. The Old dwarf calls out in conversation trying to kill some time. ”Can’t believe we gone this long without each others names. Where’s me manners, ya saved us, the least I can do is give ye a name.” He looks over to the Erdthar. ”I’m Felben, that there is Merdin, then over there is Balker, Walter, Bendit, Calvis, Maliden, and Smikler." He motions to the other dwarves as he leads the wagon on.

After the introductions Felben continues on. ”It a full three day ride to Felbarr. Our first camp is gunna be down in Fletcher’s Down. Unless ye want to shack up on the side a one a these rock cliffs. Fletcher’s Down is the first level ground.” The wagon jumps up over a large rock in the road, shacking everyone inside. After regaining control of the wagon Felben carries on. ”So any a yous know the story behind Fletcher’s down? It’s a pretty good tail, if’n you want to hear it. Might help pass the time.”

OoC: Knowledge check (Local or Geography or any other that you think might work) to determine knowledge of Fletcher’s Down.

"Erthar."  The orc replied shortly, offering a somewhat dirty, and very gray, hand to the dwarf.   "The redhaired spell-rat is Pello.  The redheaded babe is Vespian.  The midget riding the dog is Milo.  The quiet elf with the scowl is Quindil.  I forgot the human's name, but he's a cleric of Helm."

Obviously Erdthar left me out for two reasons. One: He can't count, and Two: I'm too great to just be included in just one sentence. Gimuld says with a slight look over at Erdthar. Gimuld Froking, Expert Treasure Hunter, Smasher of Goblins, Drinker of Ale, and That Sneaky Bastard are several names I am associated with. There are more unofficial such as My God, Hey You, and Why you Little! We are unofficially the Sons(and daughter) uva Gnoll, the greatest adventuring party ever known. Gimuld finishes with a slight flourish and a  bow.

Fletcher's Down

Felben holds tight to the reins as the wagon trods through a ruff section of trail. He starts to excitedly speak of the tail of Fletcher’s down. ”Long, long ago in a galaxy far far away …. Ohh wait that’s a different tail.” The old dwarf blushes a bit as he gets off to an exciting start with the wrong story.  ”Where was I? Ohh yes … Long ago when the High Forest stretched from its present location all the way to the Spine of the World, a blanket of trees covered as far as the eye could see. These lands were far more wild than they are these days. Felbarr was but a small encampment and the boys down in Sundabar hadn’t even erected a workshop yet. Back then the elves held sway over the land, working with dwarves and the rare human only when they must. That was until Hell came down from the mountain. Something deep within the mountains here began to stir. Ravened beast of all kinds swarmed from the foothills into the valleys below. Beast that were twisted and torn from their original states, many of them with grotesque features that frighten the mind even to think about. They cowered through the forest destroying all in their path. Many of the elves were forced to flea their forest homes, other less fortunate ones made the forest their final rest. The tormenting beast pushed further into the forest, their vile evilness causing odd changes to the forest life around them. Much of the forest began to blight. Trees would loose their leaves mid summer and by fall they had turned a horrid black. Forest creatures of all kinds were either destroyed or transformed into twisted images of their former selves, left to haunt the surrounding country. This unnatural blight went on for what some say to be a hundred years, always growing stronger and more grotesque, expanding its vile clutches to the surrounding lands. Many elves and dwarves alike were forced further and further west or underground as the vile forest stretched and grew. Hope seemed to be lost, the mightiest of mages and the best of priest could do nothing to slow, let alone stop the blight. Even bands of powerful adventurers, such as yourselves, went into the woods in an attempt to cleanse, they too failed.” Rain continues to fall with the occasional thunderclap here and there as the company rounds a corner of the trail and makes their way up a steep incline. Reaching the top of the incline you look down into the valley and across to Fletcher’s Down. ”There she is. The Down.” Felben points as the forest comes into view below. He then continues on with his story. ”The hopelessness went on and on they say. Until one day when a human barbarian, known only as Fletcher magically appeared. The legend claims that Fletcher appeared on the River Rauvin, they say he walked on water and flew through the winds. No one knows why he came, but they do know what he did. Supposedly Fletcher marched his way up the rivers until he came to what is now Fletcher’s Down. Ya see Fletcher’s Down was the nexus of the evil power; some claim that an evil temple devoted to the Devils of the Nine Hells was erected there. Fletcher marched into the blighted lands and destroyed the temple along with its inhabitants. This action did not go unnoticed to the demons, for they sent an avatar of evil to champion and destroy Fletcher. Legend states that the demon was a twisted half snake half bird like creature that fought with amazing ferocity. It appeared right before Fletcher just as he destroyed the temple. It is said that a battle of epic proportions took place at that time. The battle raged on for days, much of the land was destroyed in the pursuing fight. The final blow is said to have taken both of their lives in a mighty explosion. The explosion spread Fletcher’s ashes over the present day Down. The trees in that area immediately grew out of their blight and back to the former beauty. The trees here are now magically enchanted against fire and all blights. The trees cannot be destroyed. They say that Fletcher’s life essence feeds them still, keeping them warm and green during the winter months, and making the bark hard and tuff, so that an axe blade breaks upon them.  The rest of the forest slowly died away taking the blight with it, and leaving the High forest close to it’s present day location. Now the Vale is how you see it, with the massive forest gone leaving behind small groves here and there, but the majesty of the forest is now little of its former glory. Supposedly remnants of the powerful temple still lie somewhere within the Down, some of its secrets still in place, probably evil and vile secrets, but secrets none the less. There is also a small clearing, which is now sacred to worshipers of Meliki, located in the down, it is said to be Fletcher’s final resting place. And there ya have it, the Tail of Fletcher’s Down. Take it for what you will.” He finishes his tail as the group approaches the Down. ”We are just about there. We are getting close to the clearing. Now don’t let the story get you complacent. There are still dangers in these woods. Fletcher or no Fletcher.”

5:00pm 5th of Fading

OoC: The dwarves plan on camping the night in the clearing. They will help with the watch, but you had better set your own. As well as take care of any other actions that you see fit.

"But I have always been well taken care of by my guys and I wouldn't trade a one of them for a Fletcher." "One half for those who prefer them cooked, one half for those who likess 'em raw." She then sections of a piece of the raw rabbit and eats its, skin, fur, and cute little bunny nose all.

Quindil comes back with a decent sized, if a touch small, deer slung over his shoulder.

Quindil takes a swig of the chrisp, clean water, and starts cutting up the deer.
"Take what you like," he says, offering it to everybody.

"I sympathize with you, Pello, I was a spoiled burhgers son, and used to the city life, and the great temples there. Imagine my distress getting shipped out to Felbarr, of all places,...well,..it would've been the death of me, but for your fellowship."

Fingers a piece of meat in his hands.

"And this raw, unseasoned fare, is,...well, basically nurishing I suppose, but I'm no orc,....uh present company accepted,...I had spice, salts, good wines, all at my disposal,..."

He stops realizing he might be reminding someone else of all the luxuries he missed as well, and so, dejectedly chews on the plain meat, and stares into the fire.

Re: Fletcher's Down

By being reminded of the good herbs and spices, Gimuld thinks he might be up for a minor forest romp. He leaves for a scant five minutes and returns with something that looks a lot like poison ivy. He also has a forked stick. He uses his dagger and slices off a chunk of the deer and the liver of the rabbit. He then proceeds to roast them with the stick. It's not that bad. Sure it may be cold and windy and rainy, but it's not so bad. Gimuld looks around himself at the meat and scratches his arm. Maybe it is...

Gimuld Froking rolled 7 using 1d20-2.

Erdthar slices down the spine of the deer with a sharp dagger, cutting out a foot of loin.  "Ah!!!"  He sits in satisfaction, and digs into the bloody raw meat.  "Life doesn't get any better than this!"  With that, sounds of lip-smaking, chewing, chomping, and tearing flesh echo into the darkness.

Re: Fletcher's Down

The company gets camp set in a small clearing just off the main trail. The clearing is mostly beaten down grass and mud with a few boulders strewn here and there. Many of the boulders end up making nice seats for the dwarves and adventurers. Beyond the clearing the forest is thick with tall pines tress and some thick under brush in spots. The forest floor is covered in a deep blanket of pine needles; old fell trees poke themselves up out of the firm ground in many spots.  The rains finally begin to slow down into a slow drizzle, it makes a soft sound as it lightly falls all around.

The dwarves show their thanks for the meal as the company gathers round the fire to warm up. The dwarves keep their camp fairly tight; the mules remain attached to the wagon, in case these need to leave in haste. They set two sentries, one on either side of the clearing.

OoC: For the Watch I need.
-Watch Order
-Skill Checks used by the watchers
-Positions on the map or a pattern if you want to walk around on your watch.

D:= Dwarf
Dark Green Areas: = Forest. Movement ½
Brown Areas: = Trail/Clearing. Movement normal
Pink Rectangles labeled “Mule”: =  Mules, the “e” would be their head.
