Quoting posts with Language Groups
I've encountered something confusing, and hope someone can explain what's going on.

In a game earlier today, a few players were quoting posts that had language group speech in it. If it's pertinent, it was a language group I didn't have access to. Their quotes did show the scrambled speech as I would expect them to, looking exactly like it did in the posts they were quoting from.

I can't seem to do this myself, be it with a language group I have access to, or one I don't. When I attempt to quote a portion of a post that includes a language group (scrambled for me or otherwise), the entire chunk of language group speech just disappears entirely. This happens on both responsive and live, both for me as a player and for the GM of the game who was trying to figure this out with me. It happens whether I'm trying to quote ALL of the post, or just a portion of it.

How did these other players manage to quote language group speech and have it show? I'm not trying to quote it and find a way to read it when I'm not supposed to, I just want to be able to quote the post(s) and not have them be missing huge chunks.

You have to copy-paste the language text from the post into your response, it's specifically coded not to self propagate into quoted text.

Probably something to do with making sure it doesn't accidentally translate when quoted, because once the thread gets archived it translates back into non-Babbled text.

Huh.

I would have figured that copy-paste would have prevented the speech from re-scrambling with every refresh (which this definitely does), which is why I had originally ruled that possibility out... and yeah, I knew it wasn't supposed to self-propagate, that's why I was dumbfounded when I saw posts that HAD it in there.

Thanks, EE.

I don't know about the rescrambling...  I know copy-paste is what I've had to do in the past.  And it's been years so I don't remember about the rescrambling part, there may be a better way to get it done.

No, you were right. It is copy-paste that works, and apparently it DOES re-scramble like one would expect on refresh.

Trippy, but it works.

Actually, it makes perfect sense that the copy/paste technique would give you rescrambled text...when you do that, you're copying ALL the formatting, the same way it copies the color of the text or anything else.

Except it doesn't copy formatting for color, bolding, etc when I copy-paste...

Are you  guys using the Responsive Site?  I'm not.

Then it is odd, indeed, that it would copy that formatting info and not the other.  I'm no coding expert, I just thought it seemed like a common-sense explanation...but it's apparently a bit more complex than that...

I normally use responsive, but I was testing this on both. It definitely does the same thing on either site.

I mean, it's not like it's something that's working wrong or whatever, now that we've established how it's being done. It's just weird to me that it still rescrambles properly (specifically with the different scrambling every refresh), because I would have expected copy-paste to just pick up whatever the viewer was seeing when they copied it, scrambled or otherwise.

It's cool that it works, though!

(Given that it does work, it makes me wonder WHY it's set so you can't quote it normally, since obviously copy-pasting scrambles properly regardless of whether you've quoted the scrambled or the unscrambled version...)

I think it doesn't work in the quote function because, in order to quote properly, it would present the original text.  With the C&P option, you never see the original text...

Re: Quoting posts with Language Groups
My spouse has a theory that it doesn't work in the quote function because there is no way for it to know how to take a 'Language Unknown' and turn it back to the correct language within the context of the quote itself (assuming the quoter can't read it), but I haven't any idea myself.

Or maybe you're right, and quoting it would normally display the original text as entered. It's a conundrum! (Honestly it doesn't matter, I'm just intrigued now, why it works perfectly with a copy/paste but not with a quote, since you would think that both of them would take and use the same text entry.)
