Portrait searcher

Excuse me for the question, and for not being the most oportune moment for those details, with the whiole forum change problems , but is there any searcher for a specific portrait if its naming (letters and nubers) is known?

I have some favorite portraits for my characters (swapping among them as they fit them), but to find them means each time having to go through several pages.

Not a big problem, as you only need to look for a portrait every so often (every new character), but would be helpful nonetheless...

As far as I'm aware, no.

If you know you're looking for MMC105, your only real choice is to click on the portrait page numbers until you find the one with the portrait number you're looking for.

That said, you might submit a request for that functionality to be added.

The current portrait system does have a Tag Search function that is in some state of functionality (not all portraits are tagged, leaving the system incomplete).  If there was a way to include the portrait's ID as one of the searchable tags, that might allow you to search directly for MMC105.

Frust of all, thanks for the answer. Yes, that is what I meant.

How could I request for it to be added (I guess it would not be too difficult, but I'll wait until the forum transition issue calms down, as I guess teh board staff is quite busy right now)

There's not a formal process or anything like that (for better or worse).

You would create a post in the "RPoL Development" area suggesting the feature you want added.  Folks could then weigh in and Jase may take a look and provide feedback, or yay/nay.

You could also take a look and see if someone has already posted about something similar, and bump that post.

<moved thread to Technical Discussions forum as it related to technical operation of site>

... but while jase IS a bit busy at the moment, he will get back to looking at change requests once he's able and there does need to be time to discuss/get votes, so feel free to put up a new thread in RPoL Development with your suggestion.  I might even vote for it !  <grins>

You know what would be more awesome than a portrait searcher?

Being able to just type in the number of the portrait that you want and have it populate the portrait for the character.

Searching by known number feels...I dunno, extraneous? I think it's pretty standard to have 45 portraits come up on each page, so you can generally guess fairly accurately what page to click on if you already know which portrait you're looking for. But being able to skip that step entirely and just type in the number? That would be slick.

I digress. I know that wasn't the topic, or even the discussion, but it /did/ come to mind while reading this. =)

Searching for a specific portrait doesn't sound like searching to me, sounds like you want to select a specific portrait.  Maybe I'm splitting hairs but being able to search for ffw116 seems.. odd.  That's not what the search functionality is for.

I recall a previous request to be able to have several pre-selected portraits to be able to select from (or something like that).  The recommendation (from other members who were already using it successfully) was to find the portrait you like in the portrait search, right-click the link and "copy link".  Then paste that (and any others) into the character sheet or ScratchPad.  To switch you just click the link.

If you're just trying to get to f f w 116 then use the first character to find the portrait.  Female, fantasy, warrior.  Quick math says that'll be page 3.

As for actually adding in the ability, seems to be it'll adding to an already cluttered/confusing screen for a fringe scenario.

To be honest, having to search for something you already know just to select it is also a bit odd ... to me this scenario is like an internet search when you know what you're looking for and just want the right link so you can send it to someone else.   :>

Ideally I'd like to just be able to type the number into the Character Details screen - perhaps just make the portrait number value that shows there an editable field ?  User would then have the choice to type in directly OR do a search.  Though it does come down to how many users would actually use such functionality - would it really be worthwhile?

But if there were 50 portraits per page instead of 45 it'd certainly make the math easier ! <grins>

I have wanted to search for a particular portrait.  It was because I had been looking through the portraits randomly, not actually intending to change mine, only looking for one for someone else, when I accidentally clicked on one.  Now I had to figure out how to get back to my original portrait.  Looking at a post I had made, I could get the name of it, and I did decode your naming convention to be able to find it.

---------------------

Not that you asked, jase, but here's a feature I'd love to see in the portrait selection:  Being able to select several as candidates and then view them all together.

Whenever I choose a portrait for a new character, I find myself moving back and forth through the portrait pages, saying, 'maybe that one?  Is it better or worse than the one I saw four pages ago?'  What I'd really like is the ability to scroll through, tag the six or seven that I think are pretty good, and then see them all on the same page in order to choose from them.  I'd be fine if my candidate selection doesn't last any longer than while I'm in the portrait selection stuff.  That is, no database, just session or cookies storage.

I too would love to see something like this implemented. I often find I have to "settle" on a portrait for an NPC (which my games have A LOT of) and end up having to commit to memory/paper something that might just about do if I can't find anything better, but of course I have to navigate away from the portrait, sometimes for some considerable time, in order to determine that there's nothing more suited to the image in my head.*

*(What the hell kind of sentence is this?)

Flagging portraits as favourites, perhaps ?  And a filter on favourites as a side.   Might be worth someone posting a suggestion over in RPoL Development. :>
