A dog the size of a child's pony, thick-legged and with paddle-like paws, and a great sweeping brush of a tail. It's fur is medium-length, near-black and wavy, standing-out in feathery tufts around its shoulders, hips, and tail. It has the heavy bone structure of a mastiff rather than a hound, foregoing the narrowed waist.

The dog is alert and bright-eyed, flap-like ears swiveling constantly, in contrast to a tendency to flop unself-consciously at the first sign of a pause. It is a sponge for scraps, warm hearthspace, and abhors an idle hand that could be scratching; no unoccupied bedroll gone to waste. However, when called-upon to work, he is stolid, sturdy as a mule, good-naturedly determined to do his very best. All of these traits would make him quite a dog: he is also as bright as some Human children - Rill's bonded Familiar.

He wears a masterwork of leathercraft that serves as both barding for his protection, and tractable surface for Rill's talons to grip securely, in lieu of a saddle-sitting anatomy. Small pouches and pockets are sewn-in where they do not hamper the big dog's movement, and a small saddle-roll perches on his barded rump.
