The Mahdi believes (or at least convinces his followers that he believes) that he is The Final Leader, who has arrived at the end of times to rid the world of evil and injustice and lead Muslims to rule the world. In reality, he's a superpowered megalomanimaniac, a dangerously charismatic terrorist, and nowhere near as pious and noble as he pretends to be.
