Jan Cerny

Janecek Cerny is a bulky, solid man in his late thirties, standing 1.77m (5'10") and weighing 96kg (212lbs).  He keeps his dark hair cropped short, partly to hide the gray appearing at the temples and partly to prevent the beginnings of male pattern baldness showing.  His face is broad with high cheekbones and is weathered as if he has spent a lot of time outdoors.

<img src="http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/8926/jannorthafrica.jpg"align="right">He normally wears a nondescript mix of military and civilian clothing, currently a pair of Polish Army combat trousers, a black hooded sweatshirt with a black Polish Army tanker's winter jacket, with fur lining, over the top of it and a pair of good quality high leg hiking boots.  When it is particularly cold he adds a black woollen skull cap for warmth and misses his grey German greatcoat that he lost recently.

Janecek, or rather Jan (pronounced “Yahn”) for short, was born in Ostrava in the Eastern part of the Czech Socialist Republic half of Czechoslovakia in 1963.  His parents were involved in the Prague Spring uprising of 1968 and they were forced to flee their homeland after the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies invaded in the summer of 1968.

The Cerny family eventually settled in France, specifically Marseilles, and young Jan grew up there, getting into trouble at various points and eventually deciding that joining the army would be exciting.  He’d heard stories while growing up of the French Foreign Legion and so he applied to join them.  After being accepted and passing basic training he was assigned to the 2e Régiment Étranger de Parachutistes (2e REP - 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment in English) and has served with them for the last twenty years in places such as Corsica (his regimental base), Rwanda, Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and Chad, rising to the rank of Sergent Chef (or Senior Sergeant in English – about the equivalent of a Staff Sergeant, OR-6).  He is a marksman with all small arms and was assigned as a Legion instructor in Savate and unarmed combat at one point.  As a result of his service in the FFL Jan has been granted French citizenship, a fact he is very proud of.

He is adept at languages, speaking Czech, Slovak, French and English fluently (though his English accent is very odd, as if he learned it from someone who was not a native speaker) and speaking Polish to approaching fluency.

When not on active duty he is rarely without a cigarette and he likes to drink strong black coffee when given the opportunity.
