Father Nick

Born in southern Germany, on the slopes of the Alps in the town of Hausham. Young Klaus Schmidt found himself going to a catholic school organized by nuns. Mostly because his parents wanted to steer him away from his rambunctious way of life. While it did not do much good, it did steer him away from his worst behavior. He choose to do vocational training into teaching, with some dabbling into veterinary. Hoping to be able to be a better teacher than the Sister Hilda with the wooden ruler.

However, teaching didn't catch his joy, so he went of and took up work as a farmhand in Canada. Wanting to explore the world while he could. The reason he chose Canada was that he had read lot about the Yukon gold rush when he was young, and the scenariers of the deep green woods and the rugged mountains caught his imagination. He soon discovered that while the nature was as it was, the life on a farm wasn't all that amazing. Though he soon learned everything he needed to handle animals and even got to use his dabbling of veterinary skills.

After four years at the farm, he returned to Germany to go to priest seminary. Seeking the cloth. The hard life at the farm made him appreciate the mysteries of religion and the comfort of giving peace to people around him.

As fate would have it, he was selected to fill a vacant spot in the very tiny town of Faro, Yukon. Where the congregation needed a priest, and there were not that many catholic Canadian priest in seminary ready or willing to take such a remote posting. He soon found himself again in the rugged mountains of Yukon.

There he soon made a name for himself as Father Nikolaus, or as the local soon dubbed him, Father Nick. After getting used to his new mission, he grew quickly fond of the locals and the nature around Faro... ignoring the big mining operation just north of the town. He took the effort to be a first line medical worker too, thinking that it is not enough to save the souls of his congregation, he must too save their bodies. During that time he saw to childbirths, attempted and successful CPR and sewing of wounds. After all, the ambulances were not always first on the scene in the back road town of Faro.

When war came to Canada with the terror and hardships he tried to protect his flock. First by staying in Faro, helping with their medical needs, both for them and their animals and their mental health as well. However, as things got more dire, he made a decision that was right at the time and that was to leave Faro and head south, away from the Soviets and to safer lands. This exodus was not without perils or hardships. Many of his flock perished before finding safety near an Canadian Army cantonment. Plagued by his failures he appointed his clerical aid as the leader of his congregation and left to seek redemption at the Canadian Red Cross. Hoping to save those he couldn't save during the exodus. Hoping to find his own forgiveness and to return to those he considers his own.
