Eric Raines is an ambitious, young detective on the Chicago police force. The only thing he ever wanted to be in his life was a cop. He has become a highly decorated and accomplished officer. His partner for the past few years has been Carly Bennett. They work well together and have been a successful team. On the job, Eric looks out for Carly the way he would any partner. He treats her as an equal. Off the job, he's protective of her in a big brother kind of way.

He was never crazy about Carly's husband, Jack. Eric doesn't like reporters in general and he didn't trust that Jack wouldn't hurt Carly one day. Eric made an effort to be friends with him because Jack was Carly's husband and she loved him. All of that changed when Jack eavesdropped on his wife and used that information to tip off some mobsters. Not only did Jack's actions get a couple of good cops killed, but he betrayed Carly's trust and hurt her in the process. Those are things that Eric just can't forgive.
