Roth is eighteen, almost six feet tall and has a lean strong build. Most of his life is spent outdoors. He keeps his hair cut fairly short because it feels cooler. He seems quiet and thoughtful. He smiles often in the company of friends. He wears a homespun tunic over goatskin breeches and boots made of a much thicker and darker leather. His clothing is simple but was made with care to be durable and comfortable in the wild.

Roth, the Goatherders Son, was raised in a large family that has a great work ethic and many ties to the community. He has been herding goats since he was 11. He's learned how to trap and hunt from his father. They focus these skills on keeping the predators of goats at bay.

The young man knows the woods within walking distance of town like the back of his hand. Goats, like deer, prefer to feed on leaves and bark of shrubs and saplings. Recently cut timber stands provide excellent forage for goats. His flock is welcome on lands recently settled by those who wish to farm as the goats assist tha farmers by clearing brush and amending the soil.

His family has many ties to the local economy. They assist farmers as described above. They provide meat and cheese to the Silvers. They bring the tanned skins of goats, and the proceeds of their trapping and hunting efforts to market. Roth's mother spins and weaves a thick sturdy and comfortable wool from the goats each spring. They are regular helpers at barnraisings and other social gatherings that benefit the community.

Roth has built up his savings through selling his leather products and an herbal remedy for poison ivy to woodcutters. His ties to his family remain very strong, but he is always ready to lend a hand in times of danger or of need.
