BACKGROUND
History: Nathaniel was brought up in New Orleans as the only child of a woman known as Malika Shawe. To some she was a voodoo priestess but to him she was just mom, and she taught him her trade.

Nathaniel never knew his father. His mother never spoke of him, saying that she spent a "night of madness" with a "stranger possessed by the spirit of Eshu", and that is all that she would ever say on the matter.

Nathaniel's childhood was tough. He lived in a deprived area where the ruling law was the law of the streets. Many kids like him were either bullies or victims, but Nathaniel refused to be put in either category, he worked out a lot, took self-defence lessons and developed a great deal of street smarts. This, coupled with his mother's reputation, earned him the respect of his peers and allowed him to stay out of trouble.

Where so many of his friends failed, Nathaniel managed to get a half-decent college education in media studies and although he never did choose journalism as his career he had a good enough education and business sense to set up a small recording company after graduation. Nathaniel was strong willed enough to avoid the hard drugs and alcohol addiction that was rife amongst his peers.

Nathaniel became a were-rat at the age of 23. He had signed on a young white soul singer by the name of Maria Parker. Nathaniel took a shine to Maria and the pair embarked upon a passionate relationship. Unfortunately for them Maria had drawn the attention of a local Rodere by the name of Matthew Stevenson. Matthew wanted Maria for his own and one night followed her home and bit her. Maria managed to escape him and retuned to Nathaniel's home. Nathaniel took her to his mother who confirmed that she'd been infected by a were-rat and he would soon come after her to take her as his mate.

The pack did come after her and succeeded in abducting Maria and killing Nathaniel's mother, but only after taking heavy losses. Nathaniel was bitten by the Rodere and left for dead. It took him three months to recover from the bite and the following full moon underwent the transformation.

When Nathaniel was well enough he sought out the Rodere who was waiting for him. The pack had been reduced to a mere handful and to his dismay Nathaniel realised that Maria had become pregnant by Matthew.

In the showdown that followed Nathaniel managed to dispatch the remaining pack members and would have been killed by the Rodere had not Maria intervened. She tried to stop Matthew who turned on her and killed her. This distracted him long enough for Nathaniel to deliver the fatal blow that killed him.

Nathaniel spent the next few years coming to terms with both Maria's death and his new condition. He set up a new business using his investigative and occult skills to track down exotic magical artefacts for paying clients. More recently he has now mastered his new abilities but is beginning to feel the call of the pack. Deciding he has been alone too long he has now decided to travel to Shadowhaven to seek out others of his kind and perhaps assemble a new pack of his own.
