Andy Maxwell Flasch

History/Bio
Andy was born in 1959, at a USAF base.  He was the oldest of two children, his younger brother just 13 months his junior.  Moving from one posting to the next for many years until his father, an Aircraft electronics tech, was assigned to Tinker AFB in central Oklahoma.  Andy spent his middle/high  school years there, and after graduation he attended OU (The University of Oklahoma), pursuing a degree in engineering.  In addition to his engineering studies, he was able to enroll in a program at the University of Tennessee studying nuclear engineering.  As all teens do, Andy was determined to make his own mark and signed up for the ARMY ROTC program instead of following behind his father in the Air Force.  It helped pay for school and Andy wasn’t afraid of serving his country.

Never a macho, or overly aggressive person, Andy was still athletic, smart, and driven, all qualities admired by the service.  Once in, Andy excelled. He applied for and was accepted into the Rangers.  Andy was deployed during his time in the rangers to Central America.  He doesn’t talk much about his time the Honduras, but he uses the things he brought back from there, picking up Spanish as a passable second language as well as the combat experience and leadership/tactical knowledge that no classroom can provide.  One other thing he brought back with him was a nickname.  Christened ‘Ma Bell’ by his teammates, the tagline soon spread.  The meaning of the name was guessed at often but only those who saw the results of a well-hidden Andy taking out targets at hundreds of yards with a single shot knew that he was named for his ability to “reach out and touch someone.”

After his 4 year enlistment, Andy left the active duty Army for the reserves.  Some were surprised, but the folks at Morrow Industries were simply pleased.  Andy’s younger brother, an employee at MI for several years, had submitted his name in the referral process.  The engineer-nuclear-Army combo was too good to ignore and the recruiters at the MP began doing some background checking immediately.  Andy seemed a good fit, although a psych screen would be necessary since they were able to discover the combat time that his family knew nothing about.  However, they were able to sow the seeds with his brother that Andy could have the opportunity to do great things at MI.  Because of his brother’s referral, Andy had less than a month respite between his fatigues and the file folders that replaced them at Morrow Industries.  Andy worked at the Nuclear Research wing of Morrow, learning and applying his knowledge on the company’s public offerings for nuclear power.  It did not take long for the MP recruiters to give him the green light and Andy was soon working on some of the more ‘private’ projects for MI.  His official recruitment came in 1986, with Andy in his mid/late-twenties.  He was concerned about leaving his family until he was told that they were also joining the project, his brother being recruited months before and his parents having passed in a traffic accident on I-35 several years prior.  Having kept up with his  military training thru the reserves, the Morrow personnel department decided to place him in MARS training.  The psych profilers nodded approvingly at Andy’s temperament, able to act decisively but with a passion to help others.

Andy meshed well with the trainees in the MARS division, even opening up about his service time and exploits.  In typical boot camp fashion, his nickname was unearthed one Friday night and by the following Monday ‘Ma Bell’ had morphed into ‘Mabel’.  His nickname became his code name/call sign during MARS training, with members calling “Mabel, Mabel, if you’re able.” before designating a target or calling for help from the sharpshooter.  Andy bonded with the project, its members, and its vision.  He couldn’t bear to think of the devastation that the Morrow planners told them was coming, and yet couldn’t wait to help.

Now awake and looking at a world totally unlike the one he left, Andy is determined to see the best in people and help those need it.

The following timeline puts dates to events, but is fuzzy.  “What the hell does it matter if it was June or September?  It doesn’t matter to these folks!”  Would be his reply.
