Appearance
Regal and elegant beyond belief, Equestria's Princess of the Night, like all Alicorns, is built sturdy and strong and divinely beautiful. Her coat is a deep, midnight blue so dark one thinks she might vanish into the evening sky, were it not for her long and wavy mane and tail, flowing with the slightest breeze. Her mane and tail are speckled with little stars mingled into the flowing strands. Her flank is dappled a deeper midnight shade, and each side is host to an almost-gleaming, silver crescent cutie mark. Luna's eyes are the deep, steely blue of a sky on the edge of twilight, with natural, long lashes. Where her sister Celestia is radiant, bright, and resplendent, Luna is mysterious, dark, and rather alluring. Her wings are larger than a Pegasus of like size, her feathers fine and straight. Her horn, longer than that of a unicorn, with a tight spiral design etched into the midnight-hued ivory, comes to a fully sharpened tip, rather than the softer point most possess. Her hooves are well-maintained, hooficured, and nigh-flawless. Her tiara is black as pitch, and close inspection reveals that it's crafted from extremely high-quality obsidian, and set with several diamonds. The tiara settles about her horn lightly, displaying her royal status.

Personality
For over a thousand years, Princess Luna has been trapped in a darkness deeper than night, consumed with negative feelings of resentment while under the influence of Nightmare Moon. Though now freed, she's been relieved of that bitterness into a world she is only learning to handle. Luna is by station supposed to be poised and dignified, though customs have shifted so much that it's proven difficult for her to communicate well in the past. More recently, she's begun to overcome this problem, and expresses herself better. She often has a blend of strange formality and youthful exuberance when things are well, but can tend to lapse into pessimism at the first sign of a problem - part of why she dislikes the politics of Canterlot.

She personally feels much guilt for the things she did as Nightmare Moon, and while she's been forgiven, the specter of it haunts her from time to time - Luna knows that her own weakness made it possible for Nightmare Moon's influence to corrupt her, and she knows that she still has that weakness. She keeps such worries to herself, though, and tries to make up for all she's done by being the Princess her people deserve - and the sister Celestia deserves.

History
Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria, there were two regal sisters who ruled together, and created harmony for all the land. To do this, the eldest used her unicorn powers to raise the sun at dawn; the younger brought out the moon to begin the night. Thus, the two sisters maintained balance for the kingdom and their subjects, all the different types of ponies. But as time went on, the younger sister became resentful. The ponies relished and played in the day her elder sister brought forth, but shunned and slept through her beautiful night. One fateful day, the younger unicorn refused to lower the moon to make way for the dawn. The elder sister tried to reason with her, but the bitterness in the young one's heart had transformed her into a wicked mare of darkness – Nightmare Moon.  She vowed that she would shroud the land in eternal night. Reluctantly, the elder sister harnessed the most powerful magic known to ponydom: the Elements of Harmony. Using the magic of the Elements of Harmony, she defeated her younger sister, and banished her permanently in the moon. The elder sister took on responsibility for both sun and moon, and harmony has been maintained in Equestria for generations since.

That time is long past. Nightmare Moon escaped her confinement, and took the sun from the sky. But the Elements of Harmony banished her - or rather, destroyed Nightmare Moon's influence on Princess Luna.  She needed much time to recover, however... but she has healed, slowly. The world she's returned to is very different from the one she left behind, and she still has some difficulties acclimating to how things are done now, in Equestria. With her authority over the night reinstated, Princess Luna now acts as a close confidant and adviser to her sister.
