They call him "The Coon General," "General Darkey," and other, even less flattering names, which he eats up with glee. "General" Fields is the town eccentric, who wanders around telling anyone who'll listen about his "glorious days in the army" which he never had. He's a flamboyant black man dressed in the ragged remains of a soldier's uniform, with all sorts of fake patches and medals festooned on it. His exploits are regular features of The Black Hills Pioneer, and Seth Bullock has arrested him for disorderly conduct more than once. It is possible he was a soldier...it's unlikely that he was ever a general, given his general lack of regard for authority or propriety.
