"The soldiers did go away and their towns were torn down; and in the Moon of Falling Leaves (November), they made a treaty with us that said our country would be ours as long as grass should grow and water flow. They made us many promises, more than I can remember, but they never kept but one; they promised to take our land, and they took it."

Red Cloud is the legendary Oglala Wiscasa who waged the war that won the Sioux Nations their independence from the white man. Red Cloud's strategies were so successful that by 1868 the United States government had agreed to the Fort Laramie Treaty. The treaty's remarkable provisions mandated that the United States abandon its forts along the Bozeman Trail and guarantee the Lakota their possession of what is now the Sioux Nation including the Black Hills. He was made one of the four Wicasas that guide the Sioux to the present day.

He had a falling out with Sitting Bull over Custer's Black Hills expedition, and did not join the fight at The Little Big Horn. As he's grown older and more of a statesman, he's come to regard Sitting Bull as his major rival and has lost his taste for war. He's a strong proponent of The Old Ways, and still a force to be reckoned with.
