BACKGROUND

Born on a mountain top in Tenne…. No wait, that’s a song we use to sing
around the campfire on extended hunting trips.

Well, I suppose it started when I was 5 years old. For my birthday, my
parents bought me a stuffed toy white tiger. Anybody could have a stuffed tiger,
but I had a WHITE tiger! That was so cool! It was the coolest thing since
PB&J sandwiches without crusts! I named it Kugar. What did I know? I was only 5!

It was about 9 years later when I was watching a documentary on big game
hunting. At first, I thought that was pretty cool, too! …Until they showed a
hunter shooting a white tiger. I knew it wasn’t Kugar, but I imagined the hunter
had just shot Kugar’s mother. I cried for hours, but that wasn’t enough to get
the image out of my mind. It haunted for days… weeks… years. I wanted to a make
sure that never happened again, which is why I joined the Hunters after
graduating high school.

I know… that sounds like a contradiction, but I learned that not all Hunters shoot to kill animals. They trap them and relocate them, sometimes treat them for injuries, track them for habitat studies, take photos… and only on rare occasions have to trim the herds.

After twelve years doing that, though, I felt I’d made enough difference.
It was time to do something else with my life. But I don’t know what yet… maybe
travel some till I figure that out.

Still have Kugar, though, but he's getting old.
