Welcome to More Than Human

Hadrian

"Welcome to Titan," he says. "It's been a long time since the board has approved a new researcher -- especially one from the accelerated learning program, as I feel confident you've been sourced."

The researcher is barely a teenager, but still manages to speak from a place of authority.

"I'm Dr. Harvey Ryan," the boy says, tapping the ID badge on his jacket for emphasis. "But everyone calls me Hadrian."

Consumed a Roshak warsphere, giving him Roshak powers and limited Warcaller authority. This authority is lower than Apex's warsphere.

quote:
The hallway distorts and shifts in your mind, the edges becoming blurry in the same way they always do when you view a scene from the past.

The lights are dimmer than they are now -- likely, the scene is unfolding during Titan's 10-hour artificial Night Cycle.

A figure approaches the panel, looking left and right. They are wearing thick, full-body garments and a helmet with an opaque visor, but your gift tells you that this individual is Hadrian.

He walks over to the wall, extends a gloved hand over a portion of the panel, and applies pressure with his index finger, ring finger, and thumb. Still applying pressure, he twists his hand to the right...and the panel slides aside to reveal a small room maybe 10ft. x 10 ft., with a cramped 6 ft. ceiling. Hadrian has no need to duck, but most adults would -- especially if they were wearing EVA suits.

Inside this room is a small shelf, etched into the walls about 3 ft. off the ground and extending all the way around the room's 3 walls (not the wall with the door panel, of course). There a piles of books on the left-hand shelf, and electronics on the right-hand shelf.

The center shelf, however, arrests your attention immediately. There, you see two fist-sized gemstones, each an aquamarine hue and internally lit by an unseen source. These are set equidistant from each other along the far wall. Between them, and in the center of the far wall, you see an smooth panel of what you would call a mirror if it reflected light. Instead, it's a panel of deep, unsettling darkness.

Hadrian puts one hand on each of the crystals, and their lights are immediately extinguished. The panel, in response, begins to glow with a purplish hue. After a moment, you can recognize the visage of a man on the other side -- one of the other researchers, named Abe.

He seems to be in his room, reading a book...but he suddenly stiffens, as if sensing another presence.

"Abe," Hadrian says softly, his hands still on the crystals. "Stand up, would you?"

The man in the panel stands up.

"Please, not again," Abe says, clearly heard despite the distance.

"You know we have to," Hadrian replies. "Apex demands it. Besides...it's for science."

You watch as Hadrian, using the crystals, manages to arrest at least partial control over Abe's movements, a bit like a marionette. Hadrian continues to urge Abe to resist him, which the hapless man attempts to do. Despite this, Hadrian manages to force Abe to do a handstand, to brush his teeth, to shower with his clothes on, to tie his shoelaces together, and to shave.

"That's enough for now," Hadrian says at last, releasing Abe and the crystals at the same time. "Thanks for your cooperation, Abe. Try to get some sleep."

The panel fades, and Hadrian removes his glasses, blows on them, and wipes them clean.

"These crystals freak me out," he mutters to himself. "As soon as the war's over, I'm destroying them myself."

Hadrian grabs a book from the shelf and hurries out of the room, closing the panel behind him.
