Background: Bright but troubled child of a broken home, Ashley lived most recently in Memphis, where her mother taught Geology and Earth Sciences at a local university.  A series of unfortunate events involving a school-turned-safehouse full of fellow survivors, two friends (one close, one... less close), a car ride, and an ill-fated plan to head for the Gulf of Mexico landed Ash in the ass-end of Mississippi with none of the above.  Embittered by what happened but emboldened by her own survival, she's determined to make her own way in this fresh hell, and this time she's not going to pin her hopes on anything but herself.

Appearance: Blonde and blue-eyed, Ashley has the face of an angel with a thousand-yard stare; the slight roundness of her otherwise-angular Caucasian features seems, at times, to be the only thing her father left her.  Endearingly lanky with a subtle musculature (remnants of ballet lessons first, and schoolyard fistfights later), she has only just started filling out the curves of a more adult shape, her tomboyish look accentuated by the messy short cut of her hair and her functional, unisex clothing choices.  Her fashionable novelty jacket and a fading smear of dark eyeliner suggest she has not yet entirely forgotten her old self... or maybe that's just dark circles from some fairly obvious sleep deprivation.

Personality: Aloof, bookish, curious to a fault, and too clever by half, Ashley is the textbook definition of precocious youth.  She had trouble opening up to others before the apocalypse, and it's only gotten worse since then.  Forced to adopt a tough, self-reliant, no-nonsense attitude, in truth Ash is in well over her head here, and a part of her still searches for some meaningful human connection where she might recapture lost innocence, even if she never quite had that in her life before all this happened, either.

Character Traits:
• Totally didn't steal this idea from Terry.
• A hipster before it was cool existed.
• Way less sure of herself than she sounds -- and, conversely, not nearly as much of an asshole as she pretends to be.  Usually.
• Dark sense of humor, but also hopelessly cheesy.  Jokes that she would stab someone for a Klondike bar.  Or mom's crepes.  Or a slice of pizza.  Or pretty much any decent cooked food anymore.
• Might not be joking.
• Does not handle her alcohol well.  Really does not handle her alcohol well.
• Terrified of alarms.
• Guns make her nervous.
• Hips don't lie.

Character Keys
Key of Betrayal: "Putting yourself out there gets you dead.  Learned that lesson one time too many already.  One time's too many.  From here on out it's just me against the world, and fuck anyone else who thinks I'm going down with their ship."
Ashley Soma is done with running away.  It may be stupid to trust too readily, but it's equally stupid to pass up interaction and cooperation just because you're a prickly bitch.

Key of Cleverness: "You get real friendly with books when you don't have many friends.  You get even friendlier when all your friends are dead."
Parental abandonment plus genius IQ plus being the perpetual friendless new kid left Ashley with a lot of free time.  She could've gotten into a lot more trouble if she had more friends, but instead she got into reading -- books, the internet, learning everything she could.  If she couldn't be well-liked, she could at least pride herself on being better and brighter than all those shallow bitches.

Key of Depression: “I think hell’s something you carry around with you, not somewhere you go.”
Ash is way too tough on herself.  Personal failures hit her hard, and she's had enough of those for someone twice her age, as far as she's concerned.  She's got a lot to prove to herself, and she'll go to great lengths to do so, no matter how reckless.  If other people see it, that's just a bonus.
