Jasper Konstantin

Name: Jasper Felix Konstantin
Age: 42
Gender: Male
Race: Humanoid
Height: 5'8"

Appearance: More often than not Jasper is swathed in thick dark robes,  clasped with a brooch, with a hood pulled low over his head. The gloom is difficult to permeate even in the light, thanks to some basic aesthetic illusions he employs. Jasper is a slight figure and has a tendency to posture like he's trying to shrink in on himself, sometimes giving him a smaller appearance than he actually has. Usually when he walks he does so with the aid of an oak staff that has some kind of dull gem fixed to the top, like it's held in a wooden claw. When it gets down to it he seems agile enough without it, and could just be using it to appear more unassuming.

Most of his bulk is comprised of gear. A heavy looking belt laden with pouches, fetish items, and a long, mean looking bone-handled dagger are within immediate view. The pouches give off a faintly sweet aroma. His fingers are adorned with many rings. There's usually clattering accompanied by Jasper's movements. Those attuned to sorcery can pick up an odd, "dark" energy about him, and some might even think he's ill.

Being unclothed is not something Jasper enjoys. In the rare occasion he puts down  his hood and dispels his illusions, it's apparent he treads the worlds between the living and the dead; it's taking its toll. His features are sharp and could have even been considered handsome at some point, but now they're much too gaunt. His skin is deathly pale and unhealthy looking. Purplish bags hang under his eyes. A gray fog has overtaken them long ago, obscuring the pupils and irises with whitish cataracts.

On his left shoulder he wears a worn leather pauldron. A colourful parrot can usually be seen roosting on it, especially if Jasper is settling down and trying to study something. He calls it Tonraq and speaks to it often. There's a strange air about it.

Personality: Jasper is a studious individual, and has always had a reputation as a bit of an eccentric. He favours the god Gofannon because he admires the ideal of knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Practicality doesn't mean much to Jasper. He is enamored with doing things just to see if they can be done. Always pushing boundaries, morals have become gray to him over the years and he is driven ever onward if only to see how far he can- not should- go.

Socially, he is pleasant enough if one is not put off by his appearance and the strange aura he exudes. He's prone to rambling at times and is easily suckered into philosophical debates. He comes across as absent minded or forgetful at times. Comparatively, in professional matters he seems somewhat callous, citing the glorious, glorious end justifies the nasty mean. That said, he is never unnecessarily rough or cruel.

Strengths:

Necromancy. Divination, Undead manipulation, Voodoo
The school of necromancy has left Jasper able to, under the right circumstances, commune with the dead. He is also able to manipulate the undead, though it requires focus. He is not powerful enough to create anything autonomous or sentient, and his summons must essentially be constantly babysat. He also uses his access to the supernatural for more accepted purposes: acting as a medium, and often providing free spiritual and medical practices for people. Usually requires herbs, minerals, parts of animals' bodies, an individual's possessions and bodily fluids. Overall he is the most learned in regards to voodoo and necromancy.

Environmental affinity.
When in a cemetery, battlefield, ect., Jasper can become more powerful by tapping into the energy there- becoming faster, more durable, increased perception, and so on.

Cannibalism. Life force, Longevity.
Jasper partakes in the ceremonial consumption of other sentient species to acquire the memories of a being recently killed. This also extends to sapping/acquiring the soul and life force of an individual- Jasper has made deals with people in order to use their vitality to fuel his own longevity.

Life force sensitivity.
Jasper can sense if someone is ill or close to death. He can feel if an area was ever the location of a great battle, famine, ect. He also finds it easy to pick up on otherworldly energies.

Pain suppression.
Jasper can "kill" parts of himself, essentially numbing pain localized to that area. However that must be done sparingly. To restore mobility/feeling he needs to reinvigorate himself using the energy of another.

Illusions
Jasper can conjure some basic illusions and offer protective or offensive wards. While conjuring he becomes immobile and must be protected.

Neutral Aspects:

Curiosity, Drive and Obsessiveness
Jasper doesn't really understand the idea of quitting while he's ahead. If there's answers or something he wants, he will try to get it no matter what. He can become single-minded and obsessive.

Weaknesses:

Physically weak
Jasper's body has deteriorated from the strain of dark magic. He is more frail than most people. He doesn't fair well in melee combat and could easily be overpowered by most competent warriors.

Blind
Jasper has cataracts and has very limited sight of the mortal world. He can discern light levels but can barely tell apart shapes. He depends on another person or his animal companion to navigate properly.

Dependency
To keep himself from withering away or falling into the otherside, Jasper requires the life energy from other beings. This could be something simple like an animal, but as he delves deeper into necromancy he requires things that possess more and more vigour.

Immoral
Jasper's practices could easily be seen as wrong or taboo by others, immediately putting him on their bad side.

Notable Equipment: Notably, Jasper carries the basics for voodoo apothecary in his pouches. He also possesses a staff, which he uses as a conduit. He has a bone-handled ceremonial dagger and a lot of fetish items hanging from his belt. He also has an animal companion: a colourful parrot, Tonraq, that seems a mite too talkative for what could be considered natural.

Likes: Animals, kids. Likes reading, writing. Appreciates art and a good mystery.
Dislikes: Ignorance. Brutish behavior and violence. Not a fan of brass instruments.
Habits: Tends to shrink in on himself. Twists the rings on his fingers. Hums a lot. Likes to smoke a pipe.

History: Jasper was well-off in his youth. He was the middle-child of a noble couple, Felix and Marguerite Konstantin. His older brother, Wilhelm, was a troubled boy who ran off to join a gang when Jasper was only ten. His younger brother, Johannes, was a sickly child and took up much of Marguerite's time. With his mother so preoccupied most of the time, Jasper ended up becoming very close with his father and owes his love of reading and discovery to him. He spent a lot of time pouring over dusty books and old runes with the man, though he didn't understand much of what he saw.

Jasper followed in his father's footsteps and became a scholar. He was successful in his field and was generally seen as a highly intelligent but eccentric man. After becoming rooted in academia, he married young to a woman named Sidonia and had one daughter, Felicia. He continued his work, developing a specialization in anthropology and medicine. He wrote texts on the differences of natural remedies culture to culture, race to race. He became a bit obsessive with the subject, and eventually started drifting further and further down the road of preventing illness and death to outright reversing and stopping it completely.

It was a slow process. The natural curiosity Jasper possessed proved to be destructive. Eventually studying the theory of dark magic and necromancy turned to practicing it, and even to him the line seems fuzzy. His colleagues began to shun him. Word got around among other scholars and eventually to his wife. Their relationship became strained and she offered Jasper the ultimatum between having his family or pursuing his studies.

Naturally, in his fixation Jasper chose what felt to be the obvious choice. He's too off the deep end to turn back now, and even if he could, it's not clear he even wants to. He hasn't seen his wife or daughter in about 15 years. His work is appreciated in academic circles but his name is not. Usually he just doesn't think about what could have been. He travels often. He tries to make other people's lives better via the dark arts (i.e. healing, communing with loved ones, banishing malevolent forces). He still treads a slippery slope when it comes to his own personal quest for knowledge, and isn't content unless he's pushing boundaries.
