Karen Villa

Karen is a young human girl in her early teens. Though she is of Wholland heritage, her usual attire is eastern in style, like most Spearmaidens. It is a fairly simple dress, but gives some indication of her warrior aspirations. What really stands out, however, is her bear claw necklace, which is corded together with the hide of the same animal.

As of late, Karen is not in the best shape. Bruised, tired and miserable, but still kicking.

Despite being just a young Spearmaiden trainee, Karen already has a little bit of a name for herself, and stories of her have started to become folklore.

Karen grew up on a small, self sufficient farming settlement that served as a checkpoint between towns. It was just her family and a few others. The fateful day came when a violent bear wandered into the settlement and, over the course of several hours, managed to kill everyone there. Save for Karen. Though heavily injured, the bear did not simply die of its wounds, as it actively tried to hunt her as well, forcing her her to finish it off instead.

Some warrior men of suspicious intent happened upon the aftermath, seeing the young girl burying her dead, and the cause of it all. Having some sympathy and respect for the girl, they helped her tie up loose ends. While they did pretty much loot the place, they made arguments that it was compensation for their help and would be wasted if just left behind. Karen wasn’t in much position to refuse, and they otherwise did help her.

After everything was tied up, she traveled with them for a short time. Along the way, one of the men (an orc) presented Karen with a necklace made from the bear’s claws and hide. She initially refused it because of the associated tragedy, but he insisted, stating in difficult times it would remind her of what she had overcome.

The men dropped Karen off with some Spearmaidens, whom graciously accepted her. Though still young, she has proven to be able, driven and of good temperament. The trauma is still underneath, but so is her grim determination. Because of her history and performance, the Superior Sisters have high hopes for her and have accelerated her training. Some call her “The Bear Killer,” or other variations, but she doesn’t care much for it.
