Brother Iolar Scath

Brother Iolar Scath of the Raven Guard.

Born a native of Deliverance, Iolar's life was unremarkable, apart from repeated requests to his Captains for reassignment back to the 10th Company that were rebuffed. He preferred the reconnaissances and sabotages that the scouts undertook to that of that of the more front-line work of the tactical marine. It wasn't until the Targus VIII campaign under Shadow Captain Kayvaan Shrike where Iolar felt he belonged, deep in enemy lines with no outside support, every move calculated and measured, disrupting and confusing the enemy, making them fear the shadows. Further campaigns proved his resourcefulness and his capabilities behind enemy lines, striking from the shadows to cripple and terrify his foes. He garnered a reputation as cold and clinical, dedicated to the chapter's way of warfare.

After the successes he had been a part of he was given his desired reassignment to the 10th Company as a Sergeant, where he was to instruct neophytes in the ways of the Sons of Corax, his Captains hoping that his rigorous dedication to the chapter's ideals would rub off on his charges. However, he proved to be a bad leader, dismissing squad members if they failed to meet his punishing standards, sometimes going so far as to abandon squad-mates during missions to force them to survive alone behind enemy lines or even to achieve the objective alone, to prove his superiority. Demotion from Sergeant did not prevent this "one-man army" mentality he had fostered, and soon he was recommended to the Deathwatch by Shadow Captain Korvydae, who felt from his own experiences that this would suit Iolar more, whilst also preventing him from becoming an embarrassment to the 10th Company.

Iolar exemplifies the outward appearance of the Raven Guard, his black eyes cold and unforgiving to those who look into them. His face is cold and impassive, a broad scar from an Ork blade marring the features on the left side that stretches up across his shaven scalp. Two black service studs on the right-hand side of his forehead denote a century of service. Between missions he wears a simple tunic of pale grey, not wanting to stand out. Realising his transfer to the Deathwatch is not so much a matter of honour but due to his character (or lack thereof), Iolar strives to be more co-operative with his brothers. He remains impassive and taciturn, but is willing to listen and learn from his fellows, despite being privately confused by the camaraderie displayed by other, more charismatic fellows. He is desperate to succeed as a member of the Deathwatch, so he can return to his chapter and they will remember his successes in the Deathwatch and as a marine of the 3rd Company, not his perceived failures as a scout sergeant.

More often than not he chooses to deploy in scout armour, but should the need arise he will deploy in his power armour, showing the same stealthiness regardless of the weight. He favours his Stalker-pattern bolter, preferring to take on his foes from afar, but he is not afraid to get up close and personal.
