Bessa of Horn, the Humble Bride

For all her cares, for all her responsibilities, Bessa of Horn still looks young. She's a widow and a mother, a general and a queen, but neither sorrow nor battle have put lines on her face. Her grief lives in her green eyes, and she rarely allows it to show. Her bearing radiates command, not just of others, but of herself. Bessa seems quietly but supremely self-contained, cloaked in a dignity that demands nothing of others.

The Humble Bride is a woman of medium height, the curves of her motherhood receded back into the musculature of a woman who is as diligent about her swordsmanship and horsemanship as she is about matters of state. The brown of her shoulder length hair is broken by amber-gold streaks radiating from her brow. Even when surrounded by courtiers, she prefers simple styles and cuts that allow freedom of movement. Whatever grandeur is in her, she carries inside; there's nothing ostentatious about her.

When in the field—as she most often is in these troubled times—the queen-in-exile wears undecorated lamellar armor and carries a long blade that cannot be anything other than a daiklave. When drawn, the straight orichalcum blade glitters with hundreds of inscribed runes, though only the larger one a few inches above the unadorned crossguard actually glows. The orichalcum is ancient enough to show hints of green at the edges. Though there is a setting for a hearthstone in the pommel, it is empty.
