Wild child.

It was a nickname her father had given her before she'd even learned to talk.  It was the same name they'd called her mother because of her restless spirit and wandering feet.  To his chagrin, Maeryn often lived up to the expectation of being wild.  While she was not an imposing figure, being of medium build and height, she never shied from confrontation.  Her skill in fighting lay with bladed weapons.  The knife at her belt had belonged to her father before he'd been ravaged by a bear.  The machete at her back had killed the beast.  She carried both with her as reminder of what he'd taught her and all he'd sacrificed to ensure her survival.

Her father had been a scavenger, and Maeryn followed in his wake, learning the knowledge of the mountain, the skill of raiding, and the ways of the townies.  Maeryn's thrills lay in the challenge of hunting down whatever the clan most needed, acquiring the occasional bit of old world comfort, and of depriving lesser townfolk of their belongings.  She didn't need to leave her clan to have the freedom she craved.  She felt it brushing past her face and whipping through her hair every time she straddled an ATV.

While she had no memory of her mother (the woman that left the clan and abandoned her when she was an infant), Maeryn had been told quite often that she looked very much like her.  Her raven hair and dusky skin hinted at some native blood in her lineage, though it mattered little now.  She was clan born and clan raised, loyal to her people, and determined not to give up on them as her mother had.  Her dark, haunted eyes that seemed to bore through a man spoke volumes of what she'd already endured.
