The son of balseros, rafters who made it to Florida from Cuba in the 1960’s, Rafa Torres was brought up in Miami’s little Havana. He enlisted in the Navy in 1993, aged eighteen, motivated by a desire to give something back to the country that had taken his parents in.

In late 1999 Torres was serving as a Gunner’s Mate Second Class aboard the AEGIS cruiser USS Gettysburg when, during one of the last Naval battles of the Twilight War, Gettysburg was sunk with the loss of more than three quarters of her crew in the North Sea some one hundred miles off the German coast.

Rescued from the freezing water, Torres found himself one of a large number of sailors that the Navy no longer had a need for. The Army, on the other hand, had a pressing need for warm bodies, so, after some rudimentary training intended to teach some basic infantry skills, he found himself en route to the 5th Infantry Division, where his skill set saw him eventually assigned to the 1/5th Aviation as a gunner.

Five feet eight inches tall, with hair usually worn closely cropped to his skull, Rafa Torres is usually attired in woodland camo U.S. Army issue BDU’s that are devoid of rank or Divisional insignia, indicating that  they were issued out of stores as a stop gap measure. He sports a number of tattoos, amongst them the crest of the USS Gettysburg, which is inked on to his left arm.
