Zoltan followed a somewhat convoluted route to the 5th Infantry Division. When he was picked up by an American patrol near the Oder river in January 2000 he told them that he had been in the Hungarian Army and that he and some of his comrades - in the literal rather than Communist sense - had struck out on their own the previous fall after their unit had fallen apart. Deciding to head west so they could defect to NATO, they had instead managed to cross the whole of eastern Czechoslovakia and much of southern Poland, losing most of their number along the way, before finally stumbling into the NATO lines.

It would be fair to say that one of the two CIC agents that interviewed Zoltan was more than a little skeptical, but somehow or other he managed to find his way into the replacement pipeline, a journey which eventually saw him assigned to the Cajuns a week or so before they jumped off on their final offensive. A warm body was a warm body after all. And as the other CIC agent said, if he was a KGB plant he would have probably had a better story…

Zoltan is some five feet ten inches tall, dark haired, with a distinctly non military layer of perm stubble on his chin, looks skinny, although his muscles are finely honed, indicating that he’s in good shape. He’s had to make do as best as he can in terms of uniform and equipment, wears a mish mash of clothes, usually flecktarn camo trousers, a worn and faded black fleece, the right elbow of which is a different shade of black, indicating it has been mended after wearing out, over which he wears a Soviet issue lifchick vest. Headgear consists of an OD Hungarian Army M70 steel helmet, similar in appearance to a World War 2 era US Army M1 helmet, while on his feet he sports a pair of black running shoes with three white stripes on the side the mark of the West German Adidas company.
