Character History:



Sigríðr is a daughter of Erik the Pale, late Jarl of Sogn, a fjord domain in the Norwegian coast. Proud descender of a line of warriors, Erik still remembered the times Sogn was an independent petty kingdom, before Harald Fairhair unified Norway under his command. Ambitious but not cunning enough, Erik made the mistake of opposing Fairhair, in a bid to become independent again. Erik's rebellion failed, he was killed and his family fell in disgrace.

By then, Sigríðr had been married to a minor Norse lord, Gudrød. Cowardly, Gudrød feared the King might consider him part of his father-in-law's conspiracy, so he hastened to pledge allegiance to Fairhair. To make a show of distancing himself from Sigríðr's family, he repudiated her and sold her into thralldom, a gesture designed to further humiliate Erik's lineage and thus please King Fairhair.

While her former husband was rewarded for this vile act, Sigríðr found herself traded like cattle. She missed her former life as mistress of a lordship, but not her husband - she had never loved him, a meek weakling who couldn't produce an heir despite her attemtps. It was fate that brought her to be given to an old crone with a reputation as a witch, as payment for a spell. For two years she served the woman, who sensed her anger and initiated her in the ways of seiðr.

When the old witch died, Sigríðr became unclaimed property. She was auctioned and sold to a merchant, who was counting on getting a good price for her overseas, in the domains of the ambitious Lord of Orkney...

...but the equally ambitious Sigríðr had other plans...
