Practically as old as Amber itself, Dik has simply always been there. Officially, he retired at least a century ago as his mind tends to wander, and he is no longer able to focus on any task for long. He has stayed in the castle simply because everyone is too fond of the old man to ask him to move elsewhere.

Usually, he can be found in the Queen's garden where he is "taking a break" and letting the sunshine warm his bones. Vialle is especially fond of the old man, and he can tell stories of the elders as children, even Benedict. Whether or not they're all true, no one can say, but no one has contradicted him either.
