Mika Sakamoto

Name: Mika Sakamoto
Nickname: None
Race/Ethnicity: Asian
Age: 24
Weight: 110
Height: 5'2"
Distinguishing Marks: None
Eye Color: Dark brown, almost black
Hair Color: Brown

Species: Human / Host of the Void

Appearance: Mika is unremarkable in appearance. She's of middling height and on the thin side, with youthful, reasonably pleasant features and medium-long hair worn in a straight bob. Her complexion is unusually even and unblemished, and indeed there's little to nothing one could use to concretely distinguish her physically. She's very hard to pick out in a crowd.

Personality: Mika can come off as remarkably bland and forgettable, with enough of a grasp of manners and small talk to avoid making any impression at all in casual interactions. She's somewhat on the shy side, and generally tries to be honest and helpful, especially because it's easy to assume the opposite about her for those that know her nature. Those that get to know her could find she has a few quirks and an occasional undercurrent of eeriness, such as her aesthetic appreciation for horror movies. She's also interested in both astronomy and astrology, and likes music enough to know how to sing, dance, and play a couple of instruments.

All of this assumes, of course, that she has an actual personality rather than just a learned "front" from whatever it is that inhabits her. It's definitely known that she doesn’t process most emotional extremes the same way that others do, especially fear.

Powers/Abilities:
Doorway to the Void: Mika is a human connection to "nothing," but not just any nothing - the sprawling void between the stars, trillions of miles across with no matter, heat, or light. This has had several odd effects on her, although none are immediately obvious just from looking at her. The first is that she no longer has a detectable consciousness. Mundane brain scans will show a mundane brain ticking away with inhuman regularity, but telepathy, mind control, and the like is simply cast into the void. Even physical effects such as truth serum don’t reach whatever it is that passes for her mind. It’s not a question of relative strengths; there’s simply no target for such powers. Those that try to read her mind must look away at once or be confronted with the horrifying mental overload of infinite nothingness.

Unencumbered Consciousness: Whatever it is that powers – or lets her simulate – Mika’s normal human actions isn’t quite lined up with normal brain function. She’s impervious to unhelpful distractions such as fear, pain, and boredom, although she still recognizes them and the potential threats they can represent. She has near-inhuman reflexes and coordination, as well as a couple of odder quirks, such as perfect pitch and an inability to see optical illusions. None of this is strictly superhuman, though. She can’t, say, hear through walls or go a year without food or sleep.

Sensory Invisibility: When Mika puts her mind to it, she can project how utterly infinitesimal she is into the senses of others nearby. She doesn’t actually turn invisible, inaudible, and the like; instead her presence seems to the senses of others to be so unimportant that she’s naturally disregarded before the conscious mind actually registers her. Since this ability works on senses rather than thoughts, being “invisible” works better if people don’t already know she was there. They won’t forget that they were looking at her, interacting with her, etc. It also has a limited range and thus is more effective indoors, since people will still see her at a distance.

Reverse Burglar:
In Mika’s youth, she didn’t have much control over her abilities, and being constantly overlooked meant that she would often get lost or stuck or locked into places without assistance. She taught herself how to get out of those places (and by extension, into them) by any means necessary, whether by climbing and crawling, lockpicking, or brute force. To this day, she never leaves home without at least a few small tools, which to those that don’t know her look suspiciously like a breaking-and-entering kit. She also has some training in hand-to-hand combat, in case she gets locked in with someone or something unpleasant. Of course, who knows if that will do any good in a place like Sanctuary.

Background:
Mika is the daughter of two members of an East Asian doomsday cult, although she doesn’t know who they were or even precisely what country she was originally born in. She was intended from birth to be a human sacrifice of sorts – a vessel for one of the many deities revered in the strange, syncretic religion. As an infant, the cult elders determined she would be ideal for a ritual transferring the spirit of one or more moon deities into her to lend their power to the cause. They set up a ritual to skim some of the metaphysical “essence” of the moon from its physical location into the newborn.

The cultists were actually very good at ritual magic, but not at astrophysics. Their ritual called for great precision in its targeting, and they miscalculated the moon’s location in space by several orders of magnitude. The ritual was a failure, at least with regard to its original intention, as its magical targeting landed in distant, empty space. With no apparent change in the baby, she was just returned to her parents. The cult’s safehouses were raided by law enforcement about a year later, and Mika was found in Japan, showing signs of neglect. The authorities assumed she’d been mistreated (though in fact she was just frequently misplaced) and turned her over to the foster care system, where she was given the name she goes by now.

Mika didn’t think much of being constantly overlooked and forgotten about as she grew up, although it didn’t do wonders for her self-esteem. It wasn’t until she was in high school that she realized that she could consciously, totally vanish from the perceptions of others. Her efforts to look into this phenomenon drew the attention of a whole other set of authorities, who quickly arranged for her to move to Sanctuary. She finished high school and college there, and is now a grad student in astrophysics.
