Background: Vance was a bully as a child.  It was all he knew since his father was an abusive father and husband.  By the age of 16, his father left him alone after Vance kicked his butt a couple of times.

Vance joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17 in 1993, roughly two years after the beginning of WWIII (AKA the Global Civil War). From 1993-1999 he served as an 0313 (LAV Crewman). While Vance was a good Marine in combat he had a tendency to get in trouble while on liberty (mostly due to his attitude to POG's and REMF's) and for the most part remained at the rank of E-2/PFC.

After the arrival of the 'Visitor' (AKA the SDF-1) Vance was not allowed to re-enlist due to his previous NJP's. In civilian life, Vance found work as a construction worker. In 2009 he found himself working on Macross Island and was among the civilian population who space folded with the SDF-1 to the orbit of Pluto.

During his time in the service, Vance has mellowed a bit. He lost a lot on the tendency to bully once he discovered the rest of his unit were not out to get him or punish him just for being him. He has learned loyalty to the unit and the Corp. He still manages to get into trouble a lot due to his disrespectful attitude toward REMF's and newbie officers. But he will also take the flack for others in his unit and save them a reprimand.

Vance was never the best looking of men, but his time in the service has decreased his appearance greatly. Numerous scars adorne his body as well as tattoo's.
