THE PHYSICAL

Physical Description: Zane has black hair that he generally keeps full and messy. His eyes are a hazel brown, and he usually has a bit of stubble. He stands at 5’ 11” tall and weighs about 165 lbs, some of which is muscle, though you usually cannot tell through his baggy clothes. He usually likes to dress in layers, almost always wearing some kind of jacket or hoodie. To some, he might appear somewhat shady due to rugged appearance. Though he keeps his hair messy and he is often found unshaven, his clothes always look pristine.

Distinguishing Features: He always carries with him a pocket watch on a chain, usually held in a jacket pocket.

THE PERSONAL

Personality Description: Zane is a very inquisitive person. He has been full of questions from a young age about how things work and why things happen the way they do. This led him to studying fervently in school and being fairly intelligent, though his common sense sometimes fails him. For the most part, when meeting new people, he is very reserved, almost seeming standoffish. Before opening up, Zane likes to really analyze a person. Unfortunately, in many cases, this drives people away before he gets the chance to show people what he is actually like. Once he makes a friend, however, Zane is actually a very fun loving individual who likes to joke around, play games, and just enjoy life. He is very protective of his friends and is loyal to a fault. He would even do what he could to protect someone he didn’t know. He hates the idea of someone hurting because he didn’t do something to prevent it.

Goals: Zane strives to learn the most that he can. He doesn’t wish to become the greatest magician of all time, but he wishes to learn all he can about magic, it’s uses, and how he can use it to improve the lives of those close to him. Although he would never mention, another major goal of his is to simply find friendship amongst some of his peers.

Likes: Books, board games, video games, and his clock and pocket watch collection

Dislikes: Fancy clothes, snakes, mice, his father

THE BIOGRAPHICAL

Characters History: Zane grew up, as many children do, curious about how the world works. As a child, he would frequently ask his parents why something was the way it was, usually without much in the way of an answer. His parents had him accidentally and, though they did what they could to take care of him, they really had no idea how to raise a child or any desire to do so. As soon as he started his schooling, even at the age of 6, he spent his recesses in the library (with his teacher’s permission) so that he could try to learn more about the world. At the age of 7, Zane’s father was arrested for the murder of his mother. Because Zane had no other family able to take him in, he found himself in the foster system, seeing the insides of many different homes as he continued to grow. No matter what foster home he found himself in, they always seemed to find a reason that he couldn’t stay. He didn’t realize it then, but, thinking back on it, it is possible that Zane was creating projections that scared his foster parents when he didn’t feel comfortable. Though this caused many issues in his life, Zane never let it get the better of him. It certainly helped that he wasn’t close with his parents to begin with. After his father’s arrest, he threw himself more into reading as an escape.
Because he was constantly in different homes and around different people, Zane was able to learn about many different types of people and what drives them to act the way they do. Because of this, he started to analyze everyone he met. While this made it harder for him to make friends in school, it also helped him to understand the friends he did have better, and he built close friendships with them. It was at this point that he started to collect pocket watches which, when he got his own place at 18, become a clock collection, as well. He could easily bring the pocket watches with him from place to place, and he was fascinated by the intricate design of many of them. As he got older, he began to realize that there must be more to the world than what the books he read would tell him. Not everything added up like it should have. He had learned enough to know that things happen around the world all the time that simply cannot be explained without more information.
A week before his 21st birthday, he stepped into his local library like usual and greeted the librarian. The librarian informed him that she had just gotten a brand new book in that she thought he would find interesting. The book was titled “The Clock Repairer’s Handbook,” which was exactly what he had been needing, as some of his clocks needed maintenance. He thanked the librarian, checked the book out, and headed back to his one bedroom apartment. Upon entering his apartment, the book transformed into a pocket watch, which, when opened, held a piece of paper that said, “Congratulations, you’re right. You have much to learn.” On the back of the piece of paper was a strange insignia. The insignia for Brakebills.
