Matthias Dempsey

Name: Matthias Dempsey

Nickname: Matt

Age: 23

Year: 2nd Year

Discipline: Physical Magic

Specialty: Minor Mending

Physical Description: Matthias stands at 6’3” tall and weighs in around 190 pounds. His brown hair, somewhere between medium and long in length, is usually kept quite messy. Though he wouldn't admit it, he is very careful to style his hair, making sure it looks precisely as messy as he wants it to. His gentle blue eyes frequently betray his emotions, no matter how hard he tries to prevent it. Usually, Matt can be found in simple, loose fitting clothing that do nothing to show off his fairly well-toned body. His wardrobe mainly consists of darker-colored t-shirts and jeans, though he does own a suit jacket that he will toss over a black t-shirt if he needs to "dress up".

Distinguishing Features: He always carries a small screwdriver set with him wherever he goes, just in case. He also carries a small coin with him that he has enchanted to hum music whenever he spins it, one of a set of four he created.

Personality: Despite his sometimes standoffish demeanor, Matthias is nothing more than a gentle, if not slightly awkward, giant. He is used to keeping quiet and keeping to himself, but his smile is never brighter than when in conversation with friends. He is protective of those around him, even those he's not terribly close with, taking it upon himself as a bigger guy to stand up for those that needed it.

He is a mender not only in specialty, but also in mentality. If something is broken, he has an overwhelming need to try to fix it, whether it can be repaired or not. For the most part, this can be a good thing, considering how often he accidentally breaks things. However, his pertains not only to trinkets and mechanical gizmos but also to his friendships and relationships with others. Sometimes to his own detriment, he refuses to accept he can't fix something.

Personal Goals: His goals aren't lofty, really. He wishes to learn all he can about magic and to improve the lives of others with it. He wants to be a fixer, like his uncle. He wants to become less socially awkward. And, though he's not sure how, he wants to get his friends back.

Likes: Gentle rain, a good fantasy novel, video games, the Beatles, music in general, puns, rom-coms (though he wouldn't admit it).

Dislikes: Breaking things (which he does a lot), not being able to fix something, instruction manuals (because who needs them?), cold weather, cats (though it's more of an allergy), big crowds.

History: Matthias grew up in a small town in Maryland, where everyone knew everyone, and gossip abounded. Born to Greg and Samantha Dempsey, he started his childhood in a worn-down trailer, living in what was later described by police as a drug den. Thankfully, he didn't spend long there, moving in with his uncle at the age of 4, though he doesn't usually share why. His childhood with his uncle was, for the most part, happy. His uncle hadn't had any plans of raising a child, but he was a loving and caring guardian to Matt who did whatever he could to provide for him.

His uncle, Thomas Dempsey, owned an auto repair shop that did decent business, considering the small town it sat in. To a young Matthias, his job was the coolest in the world. He took something that was broken and fixed it, he used what he knew how to do to help others (usually charging less than he should have). He was a fixer, and Matthias knew from a young age that he wanted to be a fixer, too. He tried his best to help out his uncle in the shop where he could, and though he wasn't bad at it, he found himself much better at fixing things like the shop's radio...which he broke accidentally pretty much daily.

Matt's school life was standard, really. Of course, kids being as mean as they are, he was bullied because he had no parents, because he never had the best name branded clothes, because of this, because of that. He never seemed to let it bother him too much, but he also never seemed to speak up much in school because of it, always the quiet kid. The bullying died down, though, as he grew older and grew taller. Hitting his growth spurt early, he started to tower over his bullies early on, and the bullying seemed to stop.

High school came and went without much fanfare, and, though a part of him longed to go on to college, he stuck around to help his uncle with his shop. His uncle was getting older, and he was starting to struggle with the daily tasks of the shop. As far as Matt was concerned, it was his turn to help his uncle. For the next few years, it was just the two of them, and it was nice, but Matt couldn't help but long for more.

An a day, no different than any other, Matt found himself running to the garage to grab a screwdriver to try to fix the clock that he had accidentally knocked off the shelf when suddenly he found himself at the gates to Brakebills for his entrance exam. Unsure of what to make of it, he took the test and found himself to a school for magic. Magic! Sure, he had always been a fan of fantasy, but never would he have suspected magic was real. He debated on whether or not to go, to leave his uncle, but his uncle saw the desire to leave growing in his nephew, hired a helping hand for the shop, and told him to go do whatever it was he wanted to do.

His first year at Brakebills was incredible, as far as Matt is concerned. Magic was real, and he could do it! Well...with some work, anyway. Magic wasn't easy, he quickly learned, but it was wonderful. He formed a study group with three friends, two fellow 1st Years and a 2nd Year they affectionately referred to as Captain, and they all became close friends. With their help, he learned and grew. They made plans to conquer Fillory, become the new Kings and Queens, find new, unexplored worlds...until, toward the end of his first year, the rest of his study group disappeared. If he knows what happened, he refuses to say.

Random Fact About the Player: I once wrote a romantic play for a theatre class in college based off of a painting of a barn and a tractor.
