As a young man reaching adulthood, Conal Vaun enlisted in the Imperial Navy. He
participated in many voyages. The ones he enjoyed most was to map out unknown or
uncharted systems. This meant exploring ancient ruins, both man made and xenos.
He found the architecture of the Xenos ruins to be fascinating in how different
it was from humanity's. He also learned some about the beings that built them, and
as he grew to know them he realized that by knowing their strengths, and weaknesses,
he would be better able to destroy them when he became captain of his own ship.

While Conal wants to learn as much as he can about the Xenos, it is for the purpose
of finding better ways of combating them. He knows that some races, such as the Tau,
can be bargained with, but most are too alien to accept the god-emperor and the ways
of humanity.

Conal was promoted to Ensign early on in his on the ship, but due to his dynasty
connection, he was treated with higher regard than the other crew. This caused
friction between him and some of the other Ensigns and on multiples occasions
tensions boiled over and broke out into fistfights. He learned to fight back and
stand up for himself and decided that he wasn't going to take insults from anyone.
He still practices his martial skills, although he's now more like to use a saber
instead of fists.

Another part of his training was to help when they were intercepting ships that
had been wanted by the authorities, mostly the Administratum or the Ecclesiarchy.
He took part in boarding actions, but because of his connections, he was usually
assigned to a support role. Many of the armsmen took this as meaning they thought
he wasn't competent enough, while others resented the 'special treatment' he was
getting.

One rating in particular thought Conal was getting better treatment than he should.
Karst Maunger was a scion of a different dynasty, and though they both were assigned
to the same ship, Karst was envious of Conal, thinking that Conal was given preferential
treatment. Many of the fights Conal was in were with Karst. And there was no friendship
lost when their tours were over.

In all, Conal spent 12 years serving in the Navy. He served on a variety of ships from
ships of the line, to exploration vessels, to transports and assault ships. From his
travels and his career (and his R&R on some planets), he's come to make many friends
throughout the Calixis Sector and a few in the Koronous.

Those who know him know that he works hard, but otherwise has an easygoing personality.
That is unless someone insults him, his ship, or any of his crew. Then he can become as
mean as a bear.
