History/background: Born in the small Hessian town of Freiensteinau, Hessen and immigrated when he was 13 with his parents in 1755. His family settled in the eastern portion of Philadelphia with his two younger siblings.

He participated in the Pennsylvanian militia's response to the French & Indian War joining in 1759 lying about his age and was part of the 'New Levies' raised in 1759 under the command of Colonel William Clapham.  When the War ended, he apprenticed to an English surveyor and only recently completed his apprenticeship.  He was granted lands by the Penn government in the Upper Susquehanna and recently surveyed lands in that area.  He joined the Library Company when he had some extra coin allowing him to have access to books on various surveying, mapping, and other trade related items.

His parents and siblings moved west out to Strauben after the war ended and he was in his apprenticeship.  His father, Nicolaus, joined with a few others to build a sawmill and new farms in lands northwest of Strauben.  He found lodging near the German Lutheran church with Johannes and Appollonia Amend's home on Crown Street, sometimes called Pennington Lane, whose brick home is closer to Race Street.  When he is away on business in the country, they rent out his room and secure his books and belongings in the attack.  Their son, Gustav who is 13, watches over his things for a few shillings.  He takes his meals usually at the Lion Tavern on 5th and Race as it is owned by Peter Eisenbrey.  Though he has met with the various land speculators associated with the Penn's at the London Coffee House on Front Street.

Hooks
* Lutheran and German leads to one wanting to expect order in one's affairs.
* Not all things can be explained by reason, some things are beyond the control of man.
* He was engaged, once, but she left him for a friend who stayed home during the war.
* There are things in the forest that are not of this world, like in the forests of Hesse, but different.
* Coffee or strong tea is a more reliable drink than strong beer, but the latter can be a good comfort when the memories come haunting.
