Outside of school she was the wild child, for all that she is deeply law abiding now. She rebelled against her neglectful parents by partying and getting into fights all the time.
The Sheriff at the time saved her from going to prison after she beat a boy half to death for trying to drug her at one of those parties. And that relationship is what set her on the straight and narrow, at least on duty.
She went off to a police academy the next year, graduated with honors, and three years later was one of the first female SWAT Team members for that city.
While there she met Roderick and they started an on again off again relationship for a couple years starting in their academy days.
After the last break up Alex met Kirby again, he was in the military then and stationed at a base near where she was a cop. They struck it off whirlwind romance style. They ended up married in less than a year, just in time for him to deploy. But like many men do, he came back very different from when he left. Soon they were bickering all the time and a bitter divorce followed when Kirby refused to get help.
It was enough to practically turn her off men altogether.
Her mentor, the Sheriff was aging and sick. He urged her to come home, to run for Sheriff and complete the circle...help the next generation the way he helped her. She caved in, gave up her spot on SWAT and came home. With his backing she won nearly unopposed a couple years back now. She was a good sheriff, hard (sometimes too hard) on the worst criminals. But who cares all that much if the bad guys get bullied?
No one ever tried to press charges or get her fired or what not but, while there was never enough evidence to get her out of office, everyone knew that if you went far enough over the line... Sheriff St.Claire was going to find you in a dark alley and mess you up before she took you into custody.
The already low crime rate in the city plummeted to next to zero after her first six months. Even the minor drug cartel activity in the area practically ceased. Between her and Rodrick the peace was kept, even if it came at a price.
After Z-Day, the black rain, Alex became increasingly jaded and mean. Usually she took it out on some poor Zombie SOB nearby...but everyone at the enclave knows that they do not want to be the first living person to step across the line Alex has drawn in the sand.

Off duty she always had fun riding her motorcycle, shooting at the range or out in a field, dancing and parties just like when she was younger. Most of that has been crushed by the apocalypse. Now it is just mostly listening to angry music and drinking that she does for fun...or sparring with Rodrick.
Sheriff/Bully/Hardened
