Initially, these qualities drew Pilar toward a Theater scholarship at NYU. However, aptitude tests also showed a potential for Psychology and Criminal Justice. An undercover "guidance counselor" was placed in NYU to spot exceptional candidates and steer them toward the CIA and FBI. Pilar scored well above average on the tests and got the U.S. Government's attention. The tests showed a particular ability to "read" people. The counselor stayed in touch with Pilar, subtly steering her toward scholarship and internship possibilities that emphasized Criminal Justice opportunities. Eventually, this ploy worked by playing to Pilar's desire for risk and adventure. Much to her parents' dismay, Pilar changed majors to Criminal Justice, with a Minor in Psychology. Life after graduation involved a fast track that efficiently cultivated a promising career in Intelligence. Pilar's acting ability and insight showed exactly the level of promise her superiors wanted in their agents. Eventually she was Pilar was promoted to one of the CIA's tactical divisions; The Special Activities Center, where she participated in a series of trainings and experimentations in a Special Project that was the spiritual successor to Project MKUltra. |
