Niahm Sullivan

Niahm Sullivan is the only daughter of the recently deceased Gerry Geoghan and his wife Mary.

Niahm, now aged 33 is a tall, thin woman.  She was once considered a beauty, the kind of woman all men gravitated their eyes to, but not with lust but with a cap of deference.  For Niahm was a decent person and a good person and from a good family ('oh and you didn't mess with Gerry').  Although only in her early thirties her features could be said to look tired.  Her sharp, angular cheekbones and thin lips imply a sternness, though a look in her eyes suggests a deep sadness.  It is as though a cloud hovers over her, a weariness that has made this rose grow a few more thorns.

At one time she was considered one of the most eligible women in the area, and any man wishing to date her would be well advised to mind his manners and probably get in the good graces of her mother and father too.  At high school she had a few boyfriends and the Geoghan girl was always treated with sufficient respect.  Niamh was not the kind of girl given to fumbles in darkened doorways.  Whilst some of the lads called her 'frigid', the truth was Niamh was raised with a level of self respect about herself.  She knew people feared her Daddy.  She knew that she wasn't going to be taken advantage of by anyone and used this respect for her name to carry over into respect for herself.  So whilst some girls would do anything for the attention of anyone she quite comfortably recognised her own confidence and place in the world.  She was more than 'Gerry's daughter'.  She was Niamh Geoghan and would stand on her own two feet!

After leaving school Niamh did remarkably well obtaining a handful of O-Levels which made her parents proud.  Although further education never entered the equation she quickly found work at her mother's best friend's hairdressers.  Working with 'Aunty' Bernadette put money in her pocket and a level of independence, even though she still remained in the family home at first.

Now, she is married to 35 year old Jimmy Sullivan who owns a butcher's in the centre of Shaddingham.  A few eyebrows were raised about the courtship and marriage for it was quick, and although Jimmy is a 'good lad' a rather unkind person would note that, 'Jimmy's punching above his weight there,'.
Rather quickly Niamh and Jimmy announced the pregnancy and birth of the Geoghan's first grandchild, a little boy called Paul.  Now aged four little Paul is everything to Niamh even though he is so very tiring.  What Niamh is not letting on to anyone is how unhappy she is, how her marriage is not as solid as it looks although the reasons why are not something she discusses openly. She has not even told her Mother, and, "why would I upset Daddy with talk like that?".

Her relationship with her family is good although she is not foolish.  She is aware  that not everything in her father's life was as saintly as it looked.  She knew some of the men and women who visited were people you never asked about.  That when 'Uncle' Seamus picked you up and kissed your cheeks that you always noticed the smell of oil or that is hands were bigger than a gorilla.  It was better to keep your mouth shut.  Daddy did his thing and kept his family safe...
