Terry Webster

Terry Webster is a quiet studious young man of 20 years.  The kind of man who keep's his head down and just tries to get on with things.  The kind of man who his friends like but also take for granted, expecting him to be always there, well because he is always there.

Terry isn't like all the other lads.  He doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke, doesn't do drugs.  He doesn't sleep around and if he is seen outdoors it's usually seen heading to the library or the comic shop, browsing those books with dragons on the front that the weird kids read.  Indeed, if anyone talked to him (which they don't because they think he is boring) they'd think he was strange.

But Terry isn't strange, he's just a quiet guy who goes to work at the bus depot (a clerk job his Dad got him), comes home and stays in his room fiddling with broken radios or whatever projects he has going on.

Terry would be considered handsome by most, if they cared to look, but most girls at school never really gave him a second glance.  He wasn't one of the cool kids and wasn't one to show off, being quiet and reserved, and well...a bit boring.

The only truly remarkable thing about Terry is his friendship with Willow Metz.  In the music class at school she was the only one who wasn't messing around, and although he doesn't have the rhythm (or the heart) to make beautiful music he saw in her the possibility of a dream, of something exciting, of a life lived a different way.  The day she sat next to him and they talked she saw the human in him, and it is something he has never quite let go of.

In Willow, Terry sees all the things he wouldn't like to try but can still live vicariously through.  He sees a beautiful woman, filled with danger and excitement.  As she whirls in and out of her life he stops and watches, never really wanting to join in but always wanting to observe her from a safe distance.  He feels like he owes her, even though whenever she walks in his life she brings trouble with it.

He hates the fact she takes drugs, hates the fact that she has slept with people.  He's too scared to admit it but part of him has a saviour complex and that whilst she is around he has the slimmest of chances of saving her, even though he will never say anything or do anything about it.

He often wonders why they are friends and what he brings to the friendship.  He'd once thought Willow was using him, but what for?  It's not as though he ever gave him anything.

But she sometimes listens, and ultimately he is glad she is around.  Her occasional visits break up the self imposed seclusion of work and back home to his bedroom and his hobbies, and even though she brings chaos, he welcomes her little whirlwinds in and out of his life.
