Shosuro Hinata

A full-blooded kitsune, Hinata's parents were hunted and killed by a samurai when he was at a young age. He was eventually found by the Shosuro family however, and recognizing the useful of a shapeshifter to their role as infiltrators, they brought him into the fold and raised him among the family. Of course, as a spirit Hinata will never truly be a member of the family by blood, nor by the standards of the Celestial Order shall he be a true samurai, but the arrangement so far suits him just fine. He gets to take part in the antics and tricks favorited by his kind, best of all he is able to do it with the sanction and assistance of the family as long as he plays by the rules, however strange he thinks the Bushido code may be.

In his preferred human form Hinata is a young adult man with long white hair, silver colored eyes, and beautiful androgynous features. He wears a white kimono with flower embroidery designs as his sanctified robes, a matter of being at least a fashionable shukenja if nothing else, but also necessary when operating in courts.

Underneath his robes though, he wears concealed armor, and though he openly bears his wakizashi (possesses a simple blade, but with a decorative flower blossom design on the hilt and guard) and Bo staff (vines and flowers are carved into the staff along its whole length), he also has a war fan tucked under his billowing sleeves for when subtly is required.

Hinata is most often seen with his stylish umbrella, for blocking rain, snow, or harsh sun, as well as one of many pillow books. Erotic texts that most see as beneath a samurai are Hinata's "guilty pleasure"; he is fascinated by human romance, particularly in the context of a Bushido society that requires samurai and others to repress their romantic and sexual desires.

With his strong animal bond, Hinata is at all times followed by a small white peacock he calls Gen'ya. He is particularly caring of the bird and meticulous with regard to its grooming; if a floor is not clean enough, Gen'ya must ride on Hinata's shoulder to avoid dirtying his plumage.

But his precious pet also serves a purpose; as a Kitsune Hinata can shapeshift and take on the form of a white peacock himself. When he then decides to move about, many might just assume it is his beloved pet Gen'ya; as a matter of respect, fellow samurai and others of the buke social class would not harm a docile pet of another buke, and certainly those of lower social standing would leave it be. This allows Hinata a way to move about castles and other places without the immediate suspicion and guardedness the sight of the samurai himself would generate. Even servants would be considered to have prying ears for the most secretive conversations, but who would bother to concern themselves with how they speak around a bird?

There is of course also the fact that as a shujenga with a focus on invocations of air, Gen'ya's beautiful feathers make excellent offerings to the kami when Hinata is performing an invocation and there is little room for failure.

As to be expected of a kitsune, Hinata greatly enjoys the games of court: gossip, verbal sparring through scarcasm and carefully veiled words, political intrigue, artistic performances, and literal games, they are the aspects of mortal society he finds the most interesting and all have something to offer for an inquisitive mind.

One particular example of his love for such social contrivances was during a winter court held at his family daiymo's castle (the Shosuro are the consummate entertainers after all). Delegates and visitors were visiting from all over the empire and Hinata saw a Crane clan courtier holding a very beautiful fan, a fan he decided he wanted for himself. He also saw the Doji man have a curt conversation with a member of the Crab clan and decided he had an opportunity. Using his shapeshifting powers he assumed the personage of servants, using the complete disregard the upper classes have for them to move unabated and played various "pranks" and tricks, such as vulgar letters, that each implicated the Doji courtier or the Hida warrior as the respective culprit. When they were appropriately incensed, the Hida samurai demanded a duel, one which he quickly won as he struck the less battle hardened courtier down in a single powerful blow.

Later that night, Hinata snuck into the courtier's room and stole the dead man's tessen before anyone from his house would arrive to collect his things. With that, Hinata acquired his first personal trophy item without having to spill any blood himself, something that gave him a great deal of pride as a member of the Scorpion clan. Sometimes words cut greater than any sword.

As for Hinata's ongoing assignment, the Shosuro daiymo has commanded him to assume a cover as a member of the Yogo family's preservers, those responsible for handling the Black Scrolls and other artifacts. As a matter of family business, the Shosuro consider it important they are aware of everything possible both in and out of the clan, as well as ensuring that no one element of the clan makes missteps in their duties when they think no one is watching. He is simply to serve as an observer of Yogo activities, and to assist whenever possible if doing so advances the clan's position and interests. He also presents himself as Yogo Hinata to those concerned and is to be part of the clan's overall delegation in courtly matters.
