Zatanna

Name: Katie O'Malley

Aliases: Zatanna

Age: 24

Physical Description: Katie stands at a respectable 5 foot 3 inches tall and weighs in at 105 pounds which gives her almost a gaunt, skeletal appearance as her diet has suffered greatly from the apocalypse. She has thick, matted black hair that she usually pulls back into a ponytail, keeping it out of her way as there is a critical lack of showers in the wastelands. She makes the deficiencies in her appearance and diet by wearing long, loose flowing robes that obscure her body from view. She has a lattice work of scars on her body from the harsh living in the lawless wastes. A mask obscures her features, once soft loving blue eyes have turned to a cold hard steel grey, a gift from her passenger.

Biography: Zatanna has a very mercurial personality, that sort of thing tends to happen when one suddenly finds themselves with another consciousness sharing the same space in their mind. It makes her a bit difficult to deal with as sometimes her minds want different outcomes and she'll often devolve into arguing with herself over what she wants. She doesn't see herself as evil or good, merely just another person in this screwed up world, more interested in where her next meal is going to come from than who is in charge.

History: Katie was a child of privilege and wealth, having everything provided to her and never knowing the pangs of hunger or want. Born into a wealthy family on the East Coast with extensive connections spread through out the upper echelons. She was only only child until she was five and her mother gave birth to her only sibling, a little sister named Elizabeth Sterling O'Malley. At first she was resentful of the newest addition to her family, jealous that all of her parents attention was being taken by what she considered an intruder. That all changed one day when she was alone with her baby sister, getting ready to hit her with one of her dollies when she suddenly reached up and took hold of her hand. In that moment, staring down at little Elizabeth as she held onto her hand and burbled happily Katie felt her heart melting and from that moment on the two were practically inseparable.

Being the children of wealth they were both taught how to be a proper lady and move about in the proper social circles, all the things they would need to know to make it in high society. When she was ten her mother hired a violin instructor, Miss Hallow, to come and train her in playing the violin. For the next ten years she studied all there was to playing, learning and increasing her skills with each passing day thanks to a harsh and unforgiving teacher. Each mistake was punished severely and accomplishments were brushed aside.

While Katie was being trained to become a violinist Elizabeth was being taught how to play the piano. They would often sneak away from their unforgiving task masters to play or just relax somewhere away from all the immense pressure that came from being expected to be perfect. They were each others rock, relying on the other to be there for them to vent to, to prop up and revitalize when they had been drained after a harsh day of lessons. This continued throughout their teenage years and into adulthood where the pressures became even more intense. Though they couldn't sneak away as often as they used to it wasn't an uncommon sight for the both of them to be together when they should have been practicing or preparing.

However, this all changed on the day the bombs exploded. In a blinding flash of heat and destruction, everything she'd ever known was torn away from her. Her sister had been in Colorado when Cheyenne Mountain had been hit, vaporizing the surrounding city and her sister who had been there for a concert. Her family was gone, leaving her trapped on the east coast. She doesn't remember much from that early time, lost in a haze of grief as she wandered, barely managing to stay alive throughout the horrors, doing things she regrets just to stay alive. Then one day, when she had been out exploring she came across another life changing event.

She'd been exploring a destroyed building when the floor had collapsed and sent her tumbling into a hidden area beneath it. Discovering a hidden room she explored it, hoping for some lost tech she could sell or maybe food or water. Instead what she found was a circlet made of gold and precious jewels. Thrilled at her find, knowing she could sell this and eat for several months she made the fateful decision to put it on first to see how she looked. It was a terrible mistake.

What she had no way of knowing is that the circlet contained the soul of the original Zatanna and as she placed it on her head the magic, corrupted by what had happened, instead of allowing the pair to communicate merged their minds and souls together, the circlet fusing with her flesh and skull.
