The Compass Woman is a semi-voluntary outcast from the Darug clan system, having made her own household of a wife and child and taken to wild bush wandering to avoid the upheavals and epidemics nearer the Sydney Basin. She's come to know the forested foothills of the Blue Mountains well enough that she could probably have made last winter's crossing in half the time, had anyone asked.
