Sergeant Jacob Gruber is a German immigrant miner who joined the Union Army at the outbreak of the Civil War.  He served in the Army of the Potomac and was present at every major engagement throughout the course of the war.  Despite an unwillingness to accept command, Jacob Gruber was promoted to Corporal and then Sergeant largely as a result of surviving against the odds whilst those around him fell.  Having lost many comrades and friends along the way, Jacob turned to the bottle to ease his troubled mind but no amount of alcohol can erase the nightmares and horror of what he has seen and experienced.

After surviving the war relatively unscathed physically, Gruber decided to remain in the army as it downsized and eventually managed to get transferred to the Western Frontier where he now serves in F Troop, 13th US Cavalry as their hard drinking, hard fighting Sergeant.
