As a farmer before the war, John McLean was a modest success, but not spectacular.  He was competent enough to get the work done but he struggled to focus his energy on the never ending, back breaking work of running his farm and providing for his family.  When smallpox swept through the local countryside, his entire family was carried away less than a year before the war.

McLean walked away from his farm and straight into the army, hoping that death would claim him quickly and end his constant torture.  But something happened when John McLean first met the Elephant, he did not die, he did not turn away in fear.  He found his calling as an avenging angel of death.

John McLean had the luck of the Irish, he came through the war intact and held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel when the war ended.  Not content to be part of an occupation force he immediately applied for a transfer to the west, gladly giving up his rank to remain in uniform.
